Titles

How to you go about picking a title for your poem. For example I thought my poem "I waited..." needed a new one but I wasnt so sure. I dont want my titles to be bland and shallow but I dont wanted them to give away what the poem is about but at the same time I dont want my titles to be so abstract that people wont read it. Ahh!, its a touchy subject. What do you do?

I usually pick a single word, maybe a phrase that defines the poem's meaning so the reader knows the underlying message (if there is one).

Occasionally I'll just pluck a word out of thin air to put the reader off.

Usually the first thing you think of is the best choice.

I try to come up definetly with something that applies to my poem itself but also something catchy something that makes people want to read it...

I hardly have trouble with titles. usually I just take a meaning phrase or word from my poem...

Try writing the poems before you pick a title, that's what I usually do unless I'm given a specific topic.

I agree with essence, I do the same exact thing and when making a title i place a deep meaning that assosiates with the poem but doesnt let the reader know what the poem is. I find just picking a word that is related to the poems meaning is very good. Well good luck!

I usually make the title after I write a poem, too.

Sometimes the title is simply a line from the poem, sometimes it's the theme of the poem. If there is a twist in my poem, then I mkae my title fit what I want the reader to THINK the poem is about... so as to not give away the twist.

I have found it to be a great exercise, though, to have someone give me a title...and then write a poem to fit it.

i start out with a topic and then go from there.
