music is a huge influence...black culture...and rap music...?

It all depends on what you listen to the music for and what you get from it.

I don't really care what message Slipknot carries, I love the guitar work.

I don't care too much about the music Bowie plays (though obviously I enjoy it), I'm more concerned with deciphering the song.

I don't spend hours working out lyrics to relate them to my life, I just like the message if there is one.

Then again The Ballad of Chasey Lain rocks socks and where's the message in that?!

A very interesting idea though, self. I think that if all you listen to is stuff like Suicidal tendancies, Marylin Manson and The Used then you should expect a life of misery.

Pick up a Beatles album, try some Carter USM, explore all music not just the same old same old.

I seriously think that how we feel relfects the music we listen to...like i used to listen to pop (OMG WHAT WAS I THINKING) when i was "normal" and now i listen to rock, and depressing music...because thats what i feel.
thats just my though on it.

I think music is just a way of escaping the depression people feel, and lyrics we can relate to.
Though if you question the effect music has on us, TV and reading could also change how we act, and how our emotions are like.
Plus music wouldn't really be the cause of the millions of depressed people in the world, it may actually be a help to them. It's not like people kill themselves over a sad number of songs they heard.

    Just my thoughts.

For some people I think music is definately to do with how they feel, so they put on some music that relates to how they feel and suddenly what do ya know, they are drowning in self pity like the music tells them to.

I think that music is helpful but at the same time it's not. The other night i was listening to Senses fail, I think they're one of the greatest bands right now, but I started cutting for the first time in five weeks, i don't know why I did it. It could have been the fact that i had a part of a song stuck in my head that goes like this:

I'll never forget the day that
    that i found god
    in a kitchen knife now
    and on my arm...

Which proves my point that listening to certain music isn't going to help but hinder.

But seriously, listen to whoever you like, they make a nice tidy profit from your depression. Stir the mix and keep the spiral moving ever downward.

i'm not really trying to prove anyone's point. I think that it all depands on how much music effects your life. I don't think that the people who make the music are to blame. People like me turn to music when they are depressed, bored, happy, or looking for inspiration, it's just up to how you take the music to heart.

I think the thing is, the music suggests feelings that we dont usually necessarily show, or that we keep hidden. When we hear the music, it's just that we remember those feelings that are brought up by the song. It would happen one way or another eventually, so it's just a good way to express feelings. Or at least that's my take on it.
The music i listen to is like really heavy rock and stuff like cradle of filth, kittie, a perfect circle, etc., so it just sort of expresses who you are i think

I think you're right in a way about music depressing people. Well when I was down, I always used to listen to sad/depressing music and I did find it depressed me more, but, when I listening to happy music it just pissed me off, so I don't really know if its good or bad. xxx
