Word of the Day - gormandizing

Intransitive verb. "To eat gluttonously or ravenously."

I ran across this word while reading Great Expectations, and jotted it down so that I could look it up later. It was on a post-it note on my desk for so long that now I think I'll remember it forever.

In the book, the word occurred when Uncle Pumblechook was grilling poor young Pip on his multiplications tables over dinner.

Can't say I've ever heard the word before, it's an interesting one to say the least. Yes Sibs can you please use it in a sentence for us, I'm curious to see how it goes.

    Gormandizing

I begin to eat upon arising
    Everything seems so appetizing
That I spend my time gormandizing
My heart is heavy it's not surprising

Where should I start where should I begin.
When less comes out that what goes in.
Some say it is crime, others say it's a sin.
I feel very strong, but I am not too thin

A hardy breakfast you just can't beat it
When it is time for lunch I just eat it
Then there is supper must I repeat it?
I have a quota and I always meet it

Hi, sorry, I meant to type out the part of the story that it was from, but then my fellow came over and I had to run down the stairs giddily and felt utterly compelled to watch part one of Jane Eyre with him for two hours. ... Those Bronte sisters were writing the Edwardian equivalent of smut, I'm pretty sure.

Look for a sentence later today!

"On my politely bidding him Good-morning, he said, pompously, "Seven times nine, boy!" And how should I be able to answer, dodged in that way, in a strange place, on an empty stomach! I was hungry, but before I had swallowed a morsel he began a running sum that lasted all through the breakfast. "Seven?" "And four?' "And eight?" "And six?" "And two?" "And ten?" And so on. And after each figure was disposed of, it was as much as I could do to get a bite or a sup in before the next came; while he sat at his ease guessing nothing, and eating bacon and hot roll in (if I may be allowed the expression) a gorging and gormandizing manner."

    -Great Expectations, Chapter VIII

He does a good job capturing the injustice of youth! : )

    Taste and See

Food for thought was good while it lasted
From improvised justice many have fasted
The wicked sword is no match for the pen
Let us break bread with many women and men
Enjoying the feast that we are gormandizing
There is no longer the need for improvising
For we are given this day our daily bread
And by this sacred meal we may all be fed
At the altar of harmony and lasting peace
Where loaves and fishes miraculously increase
Blest are the multitude that now hunger and thirst
When the first will be last and the last will be first

To still be able to gormandize your meals is an important part of a diet that works for you. If you loose the pleasure in eating, because of the dull menues, your attempts to stick to it will ultimately fail.

Dd, your last post does not contain the word "gormandizing." You will have to be put in the stocks for 3 hours.
