Daily Sip - Tornado

Leaves stood still, and our hearts stood still,
But the sky was a-boil with clouds,
A coppery wrack, and the greenish black
    Of shrouds.
We dove for shelter and none too soon.
    The universe swayed and swirled,
And the monstrous horn of a unicorn
    Gored the world.

    -May Williams Ward

We've been going in and out of tornado warnings all weekend, so this felt appropriate. Our yard is smothered with apple blossom petals from the wind and rain. Tornados are about the worst severe weather we get here, besides blizzards. What are you guys facing where you're from?

    "A coppery wrack"

^^ I like particular piece best. I like the word coppery.

Weather wise we've been having the weirdest spring. Friday was hot, 80* (thats hot for me), and Saturday was low 70's, then nighttime it got REAL cold fast, and it hasn't stopped lightly raining since. :(

The unicorn part was pleasantly unexpected. Very nice find, Sibby.

It's been rainy all week. But this is New England, we have no severe spring/summer weather events.

Lovely poem! I love it Sibs!

We just got baseball size hail here, huge storm just passed through. There was a tornado not too far from us.

I missed one by a few miles when I was driving yesterday. Yeesh. Then I had a dream that there were 9 tornadoes, and I was in the basement with my cat, and she kept squeezing out the door so I'd have to go catch her again. Stupid death-wish dream-cat.

Now I've been watching a Discovery Channel show about the tornado outbreak in April, so I'm sure to have charming nocturnal events again tonight. Maybe I should just watch Twister and get it over with.

Twister should end it all for you. :P

Also a nice poem with a interesting message and yes the unicorn threw me off a bit. :P

I think this poem shows the limitation of format poetry, specifically rhymed poetry.

Don't care too much for this poem, it's a little trite, but appropriate for the USA. I heard about the big tornado on the news just now as I woke up.

We are facing the worst drought ever, once fertile fields are withering away and rivers are disappearing:(

I enjoyed this Poem "Tornado" Sibby. Having witnessed their destruction first hand and seen their beauty from side to side. I even have a great snapshot from below a funnel cloud, a hundred yards off the ground. Stupid, I know, could not resist. I do not see the triteness Ingrid, there is always more depth to a Poems surface.
There is a drought in all countries, even those in flood stage. Living Water is getting scarcer and scarcer. When fertile fields are parched, only corrupt fruit sprouts and when the rivers run dry, myriads will come. Peace and Blessings
I found this Poem a bit Prophetic; can you see the connection?

Unlike ABC, I think this poem shows that even if poetry is formed, it does not mean it is limited- on the contrary, this poem shows how much more impact this style can have. It's quite rare to see an effective rhyming pattern coupled with vivid imagery that succintly slices straight through the eye, tickles the mind, and works its way to the gut, swirling its contents with careful deliberation. At least on this site.

I can feel the laden stillness, and the last two lines were awe-inspiring.

And at the bottom of this swirling; Dark would chew, on the tail of the Unicorn and blend in the matter that means most! That snaphot I have yet to take; but the,"Wake created would sizzle."

I think it's the sign of a really talented poet to say everything they need to say in one stanza. Outstanding.

Or mabye I have a short attention span.

I also love this poem! It delivers a punch in one vividly awesome verse!

Here in northern OH we've had nothing but rain all Spring...we had our wettest April in recorded history...up and down temps and some thunder storms and tornadoes too! Hoping for the warmer drier days of Summer soon!

On a lighter note...we recently installed a rain barrel to do our part to conserve water :)

Wow! What a day to publish this particular poem sibs. As everyone knows I live in Oklahoma and we constantly have these whirly friends around.
