Britt's Contest - Who Are You - Poems!

  • Britt

Well I had a better turn out than I originally expected!

Below, I am going to post all the poems I have received. I want you (all members, even if you didn't send me a poem!) to help me!

Everyone, please post (numbered) guesses, who wrote what poem and who is it about... Example:

    1) Written by Britt about Britt (of course it won't be about themselves, but I don't want to given anyone any ideas!

Everyone gets 5 points for entering their poem. Each correct guess gets you 5 points. No changing guesses! Once you guess, that's it ;)

Also, please PM me your favorite poem (can't vote for yourself) of the bunch, the one you thought was the best. We will have two winners here (maybe one if it's the same personal overall?). Any questions, please ask!

Remember, guess in the thread, PM me your personal favorite. Guesses/votes must be in by 6pm pacific time 6/30. :)

    POEM 1:

    Enlightened Poetess

Perhaps I am often misunderstood, though I speak many tongues.
I have found a way to reach more people with my fingers than my lungs,
With words I choose, the rhythm of my heart and each passing breath.
Touching other poets long after what is known to many as death.
Drifting into cyberspace more importantly to a sacred place.
Where the darkness meets the light we should desire to face.
We must learn to read between the lines and modern text,
To see the truth about what has been, and what is coming next.
The master says beauty is eternity gazing back at its wonder.
I seek shelter from the storm and dare not steal its thunder.

    ----------------------------------------------------------
    POEM 2:

    Five of a Kind

    hailing from Canada way
    down to the USA
    admittedly she's gay
    but finds it ok
for kids and pics, she's a sucker
went to college and became a pucker

    A beautiful joisey girl
    with smiles and a curl
    got her degree
    at the age of 53
    while running a company

Her song must be square biz
cuz she tells it like it is
    haven't seen her in awhile
but I miss her gorgeous smile
    when she'll return, I don't know
but she's a nurse in Ohio

    Can't say her way
but it's the legacy of Mcveigh
    and redheads in bed
    will knock a man dead
    battered and abused
    mistreated and used
    she rose above it all
    and now stands tall

    prearranged marriages
    create baby carriages
    but not for this one
    until her education is done
a lawyer, who fights to the end
you better make her a friend
or there will be hell to pay
    over in Egypt way....

    -----------------------------------------------------------
    POEM 3:

Your presence known for love and joy
a single message can brighten any day.

    Tranquility surrounds your soul
as you write your poems in golden form.

Your ending phrases towards tender care
has inspired so many...do you remember?

Serene emotions are your spoken words
but inflamed passion, bears your heart's content.

A family interpretation bounds your true creations
as loss and gain is something you portray.

Always eager to give a helping hand
    your inspiration flutters beyond formation.

Your hugs embracing those close to you,
is part of you're unchained dynasty.

    -----------------------------------------------------------
    POEM 4:

    Her pen name symbolizes
    the muse of misfortune,
    but her poetry deliberates joy
    even when revealing anguish.

A gasp of novelty that flows
    with her own words-a model
of a poetess that has no weapon
    as honest as her sentiments,
    when letters craft her sword.

    A favorite of sunshine, regardless
of her own love for moonlight muses
of which she's a part of, of which she shows-
    such a girl of secrecy
    (that everyone knows).

    ----------------------------------------------------------
    POEM 5:

    Her mind,
    it screams Remember me
    in all of Springtime's bliss
for once the season's come to pass
    we're left to reminisce

    Her eyes,
    They cry Remember me
    in all of Summer's light
    grasp those cheerful memories
don't let them from your sight

    Her smile,
    It say's Remember me
    in all of Autumn's glow
    laughing in spite of ourselves
for things we did not know

    Her heart,
    It sings Remember me
    even in Winter's chill
when all that remains are markers
on this cold and windy hill

    My friend,
You mean so much to me
    how could I ever forget
you taught me how laugh again
I am forever in your debt

    -----------------------------------------------------------
    POEM 6:

    6:00 PM

    Lighthanded,
she whisks a spoon around the kettle,
    unraveling spools of savory spices

    onions twined around carrots, licked
    with garlic and snuggling in
    with deep potato notes

    dead blood pooling, curdling,
and meat bubbling off the bone.

Above the stove, sun whistles in
through the window. She gazes like
    a sunflower, unseeing, face tilted
    towards the light.

She sighs into the steam, hums a song
    as quiet as a radish
    still buried
    notes drop, plop, plip into
    the boil.
With a shrug of the shoulders,
spine resettling, she scratches an ankle
    and hoists the pot,
    twirling herself like cutlery.

    -----------------------------------------------------------
    POEM 7:

    On entering your world

    Seize shifting my soils
    with your words

    as you effortlessly capture
    seasons in bottles and weave
    orange-colored details
    in circles

    You, Stranger, whether wrapped
in sand, soaked in carrot juice or in dough
    often put the best thoughts
    on paper.

    ----------------------------------------------------------
    POEM 8:

    Nobody knows me

    Rain buckets down

on fertile land, this green paradise

where my father's fathers used to roam

The wind chisels new faces on the hillsides

I walk them barefoot, my skirt stuck to my skin

    Nobody knows the sensitive soul

    inside the coy dandy,

the romantic, that longs to be set free

    With palms facing heaven

I stand alone, asking to the Gods

if anybody will every truly see me

    -----------------------------------------------------------
    POEM 9:

    That sunburst
    must be sprouting shoots
    by now, it's Summer and
if the ancient ice ever melts,
I think you'll find your ink
    can stretch and grow, too,
    just like any other creature.
    I picture you now,
    contemplating sixteen years,
    leafing deciduous flags,
    and now you wax logophilic,
    over a picturesque shepherd,
    carving through nonsense verse
to a place where you and yah stop
    resisting conjugation...
    You haven't said much lately,
    and I can't be sure,
but it looks like you're blooming
    new thesauruses
    these days.

    -----------------------------------------------------------
    POEM 10:

    The unpredictable Elf

Moved into this shop awhile ago
    cobbling shoes for a living
but found out soon it was haunted
by a shy and mis-talented elf.

Never know when to expect him,
but every night I leave out the leather.
    Sometimes he comes, and leaves
me two right shoes - sewn together.

Other times my stack of orders
    would be accepted overnight
leaving me the job of filling
    too many requests so quickly.

If once I stumble into this place
    and find him sitting here
so much I'd ask him, but mostly
What in the world were you thinking?

    -----------------------------------------------------------
    POEM 11:

    The Desert Rose

    She danced
    like a fiery flame

    In the wind;

    as the torrid sun
hung like a gold silk cloak
    -a fitted overcoat-
    'pon her velvety skin

    refined by the fire
    of ancient tales;
    -a vision of Pele
    only more fair-

    haunting and well-told
    in shades of red;
    she exuded,

    -a full-blown bloom-

    well-perfumed
    like soft dewy petals;
    her lips,
    sealed in form
    and fragrance.

    ----------------------------------------------------------
    POEM 12:

    Her mind-

    a collection
    of butterfly wings,
    dark skies
    and rainbows.

    She rides waves
    with Nereids
    gathering storms,
    and holding them
    tightly in her palm.

    Strokes the mane
    of Areion by day
    and dreams of
    Elementals by night.

    She sews loose lips
    with licorice strings
    and plucks dandelions
    from her heart.

    She lives to love,
    loves to live
    Sinking her teeth
    into the sweet
    nectar of
    life,
    she releases
    to the world ...

ALSO POETS WHO ENTERED THE CONTEST -- guess on your poem, but do NOT say you wrote it.

*If no one guesses anything correctly on your poem (so don't give yourself away!) you get an extra 10 points!

This isn't as easy as it seems, I think I saw almost everyone (or at least the same people) in every piece for a moment there.

    Poem 1: michael to Nana.
Poem 2: Bob. 1st stanza is Amanda, 2nd stanza is Deana, the 3rd stanza is Rachel, the 4th stanza is Sher and the 5th stanza is me.
    Poem 3: Nana to Britt.
    Poem 4: Lu to Mel.
    Poem 5: No Idea
Poem 6: Sibs to Abby or to Britt.
    Poem 7: Jane to Abby.
Poem 8: apparently I for one failed to know her.
    Poem 9: Narph to Nano
    Poem10: to Bob?
    Poem11: Tempts to Mel
    Poem12: Mel to Lu

  • silvershoes

2: By Bob. Written about the 5 Nor mentioned.
4: Written by Lu, definitely about Mel.
6: The poet is Sibs. I was going to say it's about Abby, but I change my mind. It's about Britt.

  • Britt

    You're only guessing on one?!!?

  • Narphangu

Oh drat. I'm not getting any of these.

    Can I pick at it?
I'll give you some of my answers now, and fill in the rest when I have more time to think about it. Promise I won't edit my answers. :)

One by Michael for Miss Sunshine.
Two by Bob for Amanda, ?, Rachel, Sher, and Nor.
Four is written for Mel.... by Lu?
    Five by Larry for Temps.
Six is by Sibs about Dixie? Or about Britt? Uh...
Seven is written for me by Miss Sunnnnshiiine. Maybe.
Eight by Ingrid... for... JANE?! No, I don't know.
    Nine by Temps? For Nano?
I'll go out on a limb here and say Jane wrote ten for Bob, but I'm probably wrong.
Eleven is by Mel. About the Queen.
And Twelve is by Mel. For... Lu?

Bah. I'll try to figure the rest out before work tomorrow.

This is giving me such a headache.
Can't wait to see the results, though.

  • silvershoes

Lol Britt, ok I'll edit my post and put in a few more... I'm lost on most of them! Ugh.

  • Ingrid

    This was tough....

    I think:
poem #1 was written by Michael for Nana
poem #3 was written by LJ for me?
poem #4 was written for Mel
poem #5 was written for Jacey
poem #7 was written by Nana
poem #10 was written for Bob
poem #11 was written by Mel

Poem # 6 was my favorite because of the imagery and the happy feeling it gave me. I have no idea whom it is about, or who wrote it.

Lmao Sib, so clearly everyone wrote for Abby. Do you realize almost everyone you guessed was in your club at one point in time? hahahah

  • Britt

So.. my original post says 6pm, and my other post says 9pm for results. I'm going to put together the results now. Between figuring all the point and guesses it should take a little bit..

  • Britt

Here are the actual authors and subjects:

    1) Mike to Nana
    2) Bob for: Amanda, Deana, Rachael, Sher, Nor.
    3) LJ Roodt for Ingrid
    4) Nana for Mel
    5) Kay for Anna
    6) Sibs for Britt
    7) Nor about Narph
    8) Ingrid about Kevin
    9) Narph for Jordan
    10) Larry for Janis
    11) Myryn for Nor
    12) Lu for Mel.

We have a few different winners. First winner is most popular poem - Sibyllene wins for "favorite" poem among all that have voted!!

Now for the points. We have a tie with two winners - both have entered, both have the most accurate guesses, and both were hidden (poet AND subject) in all the guesses! The winners: Dixiedaisy and The Queen!!

You get 5 points to enter. 5 points for every answer correct (5 per poet, 5 per subject). In Bob's poem, because he had 5 subjects, I gave an additional 5 points to whoever got ALL five right. The ones who stayed hidden got 5 points for subject and poet (10 total)

    Dixiedaisy - 75 points
    The Queen - 75 points
    Abracadabra - 55 points
    Melpomene - 55 points
    Courageous Dreamer - 50 points
    The Princess - 50 points
    Narphangu - 45 points
    Larry Chamberlin - 40 points
    Michael Nalley - 40 points
    Sibyllene - 35 points
    Ingrid - 30 points
    Silvershoes - 25 points
Bob, LJ, Sunshine, and Lu all got 5 points for entering.

Yeah, you definitely were outed pretty quickly!

  • sibyllene

One of these days I'm going to get all of you so good.

I wonder if this would have turned out differently if all the guesses were hidden? Like, if they just sent them to you, so you were the only one to see them. Hm...

Thank you for running this, Britt!

  • Britt

Part of what's so fun for me is seeing the guesses. I was going to keep them hidden, but it's fun to go back for others and see what they said.

Feel free to host one and hide the guesses, LOL. This took a HUGE amount of organization!

  • abracadabra

    So...what you're saying is...after all that...NONE of the poems...were about ME?

I'm torn between disappointment and exhileration at coming third place without having anything to do with it.

    Awesome contest, do it again.

Congrats, Sibs ma darlin. I knew you couldn't be writing about me, despite what others know of our love. There is no dead blood pooling in my cooking.

Congrats Dixie and Queenie for being super clever!

  • Michael D Nalley

Thank you Britt this was a ton o9f fun and the poems were awesome

  • sibyllene

"I knew you couldn't be writing about me, despite what others know of our love. There is no dead blood pooling in my cooking."

It's kind of sad that the trickiest thing I could think of was to NOT write about you. I figured that would fool them all!

Britt, I don't know if I have your organizational chops. It -was- fun to see what everyone was guessing!

  • Britt

No worries, I didn't know I had them either. I have so many people here tell me how organized I am. If only you could see my house (well, the house is spotless because I'm home all day. But my desk on the other hand, if I organize it, I lose everything!)

I think the fact that you wrote about cooking and spines resetting people quickly thought of me, I know I did when I read it before I saw who it was for LOL.

  • Narphangu

Oh jeeze. It looks like I'm awful at guessing things.
But yay Sibs, you're the only one who got the Jordan thing! High five!

Thanks for doing this Britt, and telling me to do it, lol. It was fun. :)

    EDIT:
Also, thanks Nor!! Your poem is so sweet, can't help but smile every time I read it. :D

  • Daisy if you do

Thanks Britt, I really enjoyed this.

Congrats to Sibs and Queen. You ladies rock!

Well done by everyone, you all have done an awesome job depicting people on here.

  • Ingrid

This was fun. Congrats to the winners and thank you LJ!

About my poem: the traditional dressing code for men is a kilt(skirt) in Scotland, the land of Kevin's ancestors.

And sorry for posting my favorite on here, Britt. I didn't read that part carefully enough.

  • Britt

That's okay. I just wanted to leave some part of this a mystery ;)

  • Larry Chamberlin
