    1. disgrace; dishonor; public contempt.
    2. shameful or dishonorable quality or conduct or an instance of this.

    Etymology:
    1530s, back formation from ignominious or else from M.Fr. ignominie (15c.), from L. ignominia "disgrace, dishonor" (see ignominious). Also sometimes shortened to ignomy.

    They don't share a common meaning but the root 'ign-' is there, so they share some sort of nuance. More later when I have better resources es other than a cellphone.

    ign- is a Latin root meaning 'fire.'
    -omin- (-nomin-) is the Latin root for name.

    So literally, ignominy means 'fire name.'

    I'm still trying o parse "ignoramus" properly, but I've hit a wall.

    I guess being ignorant can bring disgrace, dishonour, public contempt.

    Ign- means fire in Latin? cool. Agni means fire in Sanskrit.
