Ok, the first round is over, and some very good poems were produced. Ten poets remain, and now its going to get a little bit challenging. Time to bring your a-game to the table!
ROUND 2 - 'Could you repeat that please?'
This round will require something that I personally value in poetry, and something that can be very effective when used skillfully: Repetition.
There will be 8 words listed below. The challenge is to pick at least FOUR of these words, and write a poem that contains them TWICE. The poem has to be in two stanzas, the words you pick must be used once in each stanza.
Light
Left
Glass
Plain
Shadow
Right
See
Hear
Colm's Tips:
- The words above are picked for two reasons; they are often 'cliche' words, and require thought and creativity to use them originally. Also, they have more than one form. Some can be used as adjectives, nouns, verbs, plurals etc. Also words with different spelling with the same sound can be used, eg. plain/plane.
- It is perfectly acceptable to use variations of the word. E.g. in the first stanza you might use 'light,' in the second stanza you could use 'enlighten.' So long as the original word is clearly there its all good.
- BE CREATIVE. There will be ten poems, most using more or less the same words at some stage in the poem. The most important thing is to be creative. Give the judges something original, something that stands out from the crowd. It may require thought and planning before starting the poem, using image prompts for example could help.
Four poets will again be eliminated. The results will hopefully be posted as soon as possible (ie a few days) after the deadline with comments/reviews to follow. Any questions or queries you know where to find me.
DEADLINE: 6pm (18.00) PnQ time (Midnight GMT), MONDAY 29th.
Good luck!
