Colm's Challenge Round 3

  • Colm

Five poets remain and things are hotting up. This will be the penultimate round, and the last round where full points can be scored (i.e 14pts for 'best' poem per judge.) Two will bow out this round leaving 3 to battle it out for a final chance to gain some crucial points in the fiercesome final round.

Challenge 3: Are you tone deaf? (edited)

The hint is in the title; this round has a musical twist to it. You pick a song to base a poem on, focusing on tone. I want you to try to replicate the tone of the song in your poem, make the reader feel what you felt when listening to the song, make the attitute in your voice similar to the singers attitute in their song.

Do not use the song title in your poem. When you pm your poem to me, say which song you have picked. (It doesnt matter if you pick the same song as somebody else.) The judges ideally should be able to see a connection between the song and the poem in terms of tone.

Here are the five songs you can pick if you want:

    1) Colin Hay - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O5J-DtKldpE
    2) AC/DC - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EYWZZlVlFb4
    3) Ellie Goulding - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6EAyEWjnn6U
    4) Israel Kamakawiwo'ole - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C9b3_1CcXtY
    5) Axis of Awesome - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5pidokakU4I

Also, to make it more interesting, the poem has to be 14 LINES LONG, and 7-13 syllables per line. No more no less.

    Colm's Tips:
    - The reader shouldnt be told what you feel, they should be made feel what you feel. The judges will be looking for a clear tone, but first and foremost they will be looking for a good poem. Using phrases like 'I felt sad,' or 'I was bursting with joy,' will not go down well.
    - Dont make your poem exactly the same theme/topic as the song you pick. Obviously it may end up being similar, but dont blatantly copy it.
    - Try not to have any filler lines, the judges will most likely not appreciate it if you.

Finally, this round has an added incentive. There will hopefully be more reviews on these set of poems, and there is the oppertunity for the five remaining entrants to get optional BONUS POINTS this round. 1-3 bonus points will be given and added to your overall score (but not your score for this round, maximum 3 bonus points per person) for writing a review of another entrants poem. You will get the chance to do this if you want to when the deadline closes and the poems are posted up, just pm them to me. Ill have more details in the results thread next week, but for now focus on writing those poems!

DEADLINE: 3pm (15.00) PnQ time (9pm GMT) FRIDAY 9th September.

As usual, any queries or problems pm me. And good luck!

No, I'm not Australian, I have visited but a long time ago. Why do you ask? Ah, because some of the singers are Australian maybe?

It does say challenge in the title... lol

Ok I was thinking about it afterward and thinking of making a change. Music is subjective, so although those songs make me feel something, they may do nothing for you or not be to your taste. That would defeat the purpose of the challenge.

So perhaps each contestant could produce a better poem picking a song yourself, and basing the challenge on that.

Contestants pm me the song and a youtube link with your entry, and I will send it on for the judges then to listen to, and compare the tone to that of your poem. You can still pick one of the five songs if you want.

Sorry for changing when the challenge has already started but I hop it will be better this way. Best of luck, remember the deadline is the same! Contestants any questions/problems pm me!

Psst, you have the 9th of August, not September ;)

I'm excited to see what people will come up with for this round! I can't imagine it's easy to write with songs in mind like this.
