Mod Blogs

It seems to me a great pity that we have such smashing mods with their own joint Mod Account with nothing but a big fat zero to show for it.

I think it would be great if the mods submitted their own mod-related pieces to the account- such as a funny comment/request/story from a behind-the-scenes perspective, or "10 things that piss off Sherry", or "What Larry cooked last night", or "Sib's thoughts on PnQ theology", or some interesting links or quick updates about things progressing in the site or in personal life. It would be great if every new mod wrote an introductory snippet about themselves as well, allowing commenters to ask questions.

I think it would be good, not only because the mods obviously have a following here and it suits the facebook/twitter generation we've become, nor because I think the mods need to seem more personable. I think, generally, the mod-site relationships are quite sound now (though this would be a great way to continue that). I'm just interested in evolution and history in general, and, as mods come and go, it would be great to have a savvy way of keeping account of how points of interest change as time goes on.

And it'll be fun. For now, I want the mods to use this thread to write a collab poem, to be posted on their account. Go on.

This would be a fun idea. There could even be a special segment just for Kevin, titled "What Jane is Wearing Tonight."

Pink cat-eyed glasses, baby blue boxers with red roses sprinkled on them, and a grey t-shirt with a yellow cat jumping out of a shark's mouth.

    Yup.

Bright pink pajamas with cats on them. The cats are polka dotted with shaved tails, and are wearing high-heeled shoes.

Abby, we can't use up ALL our goods on a single poem!

Lions are really just big kitty cats. Same thing, smaller size : )

  • abracadabra

Except, Sib, that big cats can't purr and little cats can't roar. So which mods are which type of cat?
    I vote:
Sib: a gray kitten sitting in a sunbeam by the window
Sherry: a furry ginger cat with kittens, able to purr and occasionally hiss
Jane: Torn between the Cheshire Cat and a slinky leopard. Wild blood. I think these are one of the few big cats that can purr as well. But mostly, they are just plain sexy.
Larry: A Bengal tiger, regal and rare
Elizabeth: Not sure yet, but maybe an expensive, purebreed house cat

My next request for the mod account (after this is finished) is a TS Eliot-style poem, relating members of the mod team to a type of Jellicle cat.

  • sibyllene

I think there is one kind of big cat that purrs, but I can't remember which. Is it a lion? Anyway, my kitty is gray and stripy and lays in the sun on my bed all day. She's spooky and snarky and halting with her affection.

I've heard the fact before that no cats are truly domesticated. At least not in the way dogs are. They're just kind of these wild creatures who chose to live with you, but would probably manage fine on their own.

Oh, so uh.... what the heck is a Jellicle?

  • Elizabeth

The most expensive, purebreed, domestic cat I know is the Bengal. I've seen them go anywhere from $500-$4000 (depending if they're from a breeder or not and if they're registered). One Bengal cat was purchased to a resident of London, England in 1998 for 25,320 pounds. It even made the Guinness World Record for most expensive cat breed purchased. They're expensive buggers, but they are sure stunning and have great personalities!

I always thought that wild cats could "purr", but that it varies between cats in their loudness and tone and from species to species.

Dogs have been domesticated longer than cats. I think dogs have been said to be domesticated for over 15, 000 years and cats 8, 000 (don't quote me on that for sure). I agree, they're not domesticated in the same sense as dogs. I guess because dogs are more pack oriented, tend to bond to all members of the pack (in this case human) and look for leadership (in this case their owner[s]); however, cats are more solitary, tend to bond to a single individual but are independent as you said.

Actually, my secret identity at age 9 was Tiger Man. 8-)

Dogs & cats were bred for jobs that dictated their relationship to man. Dogs hunted with man using teamwork, and were selected for intelligence and communication skills. Cats were in charge of vermin eradication and acted alone. They were selected for cunning, ruthlessness and ability to share lodging with humans. Dogs developed strong emotional bonding, cats developed tolerance.

For the record, spread out over my 61 years I've only been without both a dog & at least one cat for less than five years. I currently have a Golden Retriever & three cats: Maine Coon , Javanese & Siamese.

I'm so jealous right now Larry, haha.

I hope to have a dog someday soon; my favorite breeds are Rough Collies, German Shepherds, Huskies/Malamutes, Great Pyrenees and Dobermans (to name a few, haha). As you know I currently have one cat, Bella, who is a DSH'ed Calico. My fiance and I are looking at getting a Siamese Manx cross (two of my favorite breeds in one).

  • sibyllene

Ah, my boyfriend has a Manx! She's some weird, rare variety, though. She has no tail, but then her fur is more downy than regular cats, she has a slightly different skeletal structure, and she has webbed toes. She really is a wild thing.

Haha, please let this turn into the cat info thread!

If you really want to know about Jellicle cats
    a) get a copy of Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats, T. S. Elliot, and (NOT 'or' - 'AND')
    b) get the dvd of Cats the musical.

We took the three girls to see it here in Houston and by age five Jessica had memorized four numbers from the musical replete with choreography:

    Rum Tum Tugger
    Macavity
    Mungojerrie and Rumpelteazer &
    Magical Mr. Mistoffelees

    "Jellicle Cats come out tonight,
Jellicle Cats come one come all:
The Jellicle Moon is shining bright--
Jellicles come to the Jellicle Ball."
-- T. S. Elliot, Jellicle Cats, from OPBoPC

I have 5 cats and a dog and none of them are purebred. They're rescue pets. I don't support spending a fortune on purebred animals when they're millions of great, non-purebred animals being neglected, and you can get them... for FREE!

Bengals are very pretty though :)

  • Elizabeth

Five cats! I'd say you're set to direct your own version of the musical Cats, haha.

That's great they're all rescues, adoption is a much better option. I didn't adopt my Bella from a rescue, but I did rescue her from the streets. She was no more than a couple months old when I found her, it was the middle of winter and she was was starving, had frostbite on her face/paws and lost 2-3 inches of her tail.

I wouldn't say it's free, most of the rescues I know do have a fee, but it's a lot cheaper for sure and the price typically includes their vaccinations and spay/neuter. Not to mention that money goes to support the rescue and the animals. It's definitely worth while. And, sometimes you can find purebreds as well. I've currently been scouring rescues in my local area on petfinder and have quite a collection of dogs in my bookmarks. I should really stop teasing myself, haha.

Jessica has been volunteering at a 'no kill' rescue center, but two of our cats came from the street. The third was born the day after we took in her mom. Both Jessica & I have written about the mom, Perla.
