    THE THEMES FOR EACH ROUND

    THE POINT SYSTEM
    * Each submitted poem, if it complies with the theme of the round, will earn an easy 5 points straight away for your team, regardless of quality.
    * Poems will also be roughly judged for quality- a maximum of 5 points can be earned for a high quality poem (giving a maximum total of 10).

    HOW TO RACE
    * The Great Marathon starts on 00:00 3 October, PnQ time.
    * Anyone can start the race by submitting a poem for the first round in this thread.
    * Another team member then completes the second round, and so on.
    * A person who has submitted a poem MAY NOT submit another entry until FOUR further rounds have been completed by other members of the team.
    * All poems MUST be new and submitted here by the authors themselves.
    * You may plot your team strategy within your club. CLUB LEADERS, it is up to you to do all you can to get your team's entries racing along. Bribe, threaten, shame, PM, blackmail...but get those rounds completed!
    * With each entry, PLEASE LIST the Lap #, Round #, and the theme with your title.
    * If all 13 rounds have been completed, the team can start from the Round 1 theme again to earn more points in further laps. These laps are unlimited.
    * The team with the most points wins. Individual team members who gain the most points will also be recognised.
    * It all ends on 00:00 9 October, PnQ time.

    GOOD LUCK!!

    Lap 16 - Round 12 - Halloween

    Serpentine jaws,
    Prophetic;
    From labyrinthine catacombs
    of nirvanic warmth
    Coursing through
    half-parted vinous lips
    Half-closed melanic eyes

    I come at night
    when you're asleep,

    for I wish
    for another
    bloody

    feast.

    Lap 16 - round 13 - toilet

    How many butts have seated
    on your lap, with laptops
    and newspaper
    on their own lap
    and probably letters
    and colours
    on THEIR laps?

    That must have been
    a true work of art
    perhaps impressionism
    of lapping butt-prints

    Lap 17 - Round 1 - 21 Syllables

    It is almost time
    for sleeping, my small brain
    has written too much
    today
    to handle.

    Lap 17 - Round 2 - Tanka

    devoid of freshness
    a vague perfume is diffused
    of yellow debris
    around her rosy fingers
    shimmer and glitter, fine ash

    Lap 17 - round 3 - water

Fountains are only meant for decoration:
not for greedy birds and scared cats
    so keep your hands off
    my meditation spot
    and cry like a watermelon:
    inkblack pits and reddish flesh

    Lap 17 - Round 4 - Free Verse

    I went off to visit
    the zoo. All the animals,
    the balloons, and tidbits of
    information,
    all for me.
    I neared my favourite section,
    the ferocious tigers. But
they laid in the sun and did nothing
    but yawn. In the end
    I just went home,
    without a smile upon
    my face.

    Lap 17 Round 5

    Squirell

The woods were a scary place
for a child back then. Shadows
of the unknown, with tall tales
of monstorous beings devouring little boys
ringing in my ears as the only sound.
I was about to chicken out and run when
I spied a squirell, a grey one, nibbling
on a nut and scampering up a tree
with it in its quaint mouth. It didnt matter
at that point that he was the hated one

    Lap 17 - Round 6 - Wild Card - aabba rhyme

She is hot like a red hot lava
Her name's Modern Helen of Sparta
Knives and guns are her booster
though not as lethal as her pouty sneer
from ripe-cherry lips that ooze charisma

    Lap 17 - Round 7 - insect

    Worms warp
    when I'm done
    manipulating
    their DNA

    They will grow
    into man-eating
    butterflies,
    sinking their fangs
    into your belly
    and spread
    a poison
    through your navel
    through your vein

    until no love
    is known

    and soar
    so high
    that the sun
    will forever
    be shadowed

    Lap 17 - Round 8 - Acrostic

    My, what a week to
    Attempt nothing but
    Round after round after round,
And then lap after lap after lap of
    The same thirteen prompts.
How glad are we all that Abby
Organised a change, and that Sunday brings
    New life after the marathon.

    Lap 17 - Round 9 - Superhero

    It was difficult in school
    with second hand jumpers,
    scrambling the coins together
to buy books one at a time
    (as teachers wrote notes home
    for not having homework done).

I was suprised to see Dad home
    one miserable Thursday afternoon.
He had gotten the day off work
and took us to the park. We played football
    and I remember laughing like
    I hadnt in years.

The next day he was back to work
and in a week I had all my school books.
Andrew's Dad dressed up as Batman
    for halloween, but my Dad
    was a superhero who never
    wore a mask

    Lap 17 - round 10 - cooking

    My kitchen is mixed-blooded

    we have mixers
    sticky with the scent
    of pandan leaves,
    frying pans burning
    with oyster sauce
    and splatters of milk
    around the sink

    Tea towels are made
    with the hands
    of a Dutchie
    and our spoons
    have the fingerprints
    of a Malay lady

    Together we make magic
    my sister and I

    Dishes are flecked
    like a cow,
    and my father
    with his rough
    Hong Kong hands
    is there
    to catch the oil
    before it reaches
    the Indonesian-coloured
    skin of my mother.

    Lap 17 - Round 11 - Nature

    Mother Nature is cruel
at the best of times, but
    an earthquake
    at the dinner table
    is just plain rude.
    We cower below the
    table, standing
    on our food and praying
    the fish and chip shop
    stays open
    for the night.

    Lap 17 - Round 12 - 7lines

    Superior

Sitting in a lecture hall, I tend
to doze off. The drawling voice
of the lecturer drifts away to somebody
else's ears. I would rather scribble
my own musings on my notepad,
or sleep, than regurgitate the preaching
    of an inferior mind.

    Lap 17 - round 13 - magic

    They say that genies
    or falling stars
    are needed to fulfill
    one's wish

    But genies are too lazy
to come out of their lamp
in the middle of the night

When I rub the golden walls
    all they do is throwing
    a pillow of pigeon-feathers
    to my head

    And falling stars
    are not trustworthy
who knows if their crashing light
isn't aimed at my head as well?

    So I rather believe
    in my own miracles

    the magic I feel
    when my fingertips touch
    the piano
    or the stardust
    that's scattered about
    when I paint
    a scene by Van Gogh

    Lap 18 - Round 1 - Grandmothers

I am the essence of her youth
my eyes, they reflect the joy she's bound
for happily, she's married with a don
spending cash like he doesn't give a damn

Yesterday, we both did the funky chicken dance
Oh boy, had I not been doing yoga class
she would whip my left foot non-stop

There once was a man in a boat

    Lap 18 - round 4 - free

    I am Luna Blue
because the sky fails to reflect
    the beauty of an oasis
    and the moon has grown
    tired of me

    Sometimes, in the park
    I see children jumping
    into pebbles
    and opening their mouth
    to the rain

    and I wonder why
    all they care about
    is blue, when no one
    knows about Luna Blue:

    a girl in the storm
    wearing nothing more
    but a dress that's sewn
    with the veins
    that reflect
    no rubies
    or heart

    He buries them all

    Lap 18 - Round 6 - Wild card free

    I want to go back
    to the stage, with its
    taped center lines, and
    wings that are
    always too small.
    I want the heat of
    stage lights and the echo
    of music drowning out
    shouts of stage manager.
    I want the roaring crowd
    and the feeling
    of false eyelashes
    and wiping away the
    makeup of the night.

    Lap 18 - Round 7 - Insect

When tiling a bathroom, I coated
    the bath in plastic seal
so as to protect its porcelin
    from the raining adhevisive.
Doing this, I noticed the biggest beetle
    I had ever seen, scrambling
    under the plastic covers. How
the insect got there I do not know.
But I came back the next day and he
was still trying to crawl up the edge
of the bath. A third day still,
    he quixotically hadnt given up.
And for some reason still unknown to myself
    I left that beetle alone
to make a bath an insect tomb.

    Lap 18 - round 8 - acrostic

If all the fairies I've seen today
    nibble at my toes;
    saliva sticking to my nails
as the gold paint of those tiny shields goes
nowhere, then I must be stuck in
    enigma

  • Beautiful Chaos

    Lap 18~Round 9~Superhero

    Spidey shot webs
    The Bat had cool toys
    The Lantern was lame
    Superman had poise

    Superhero's galore
    Though women were few
    Not quite sure why
    We're better than you

    Soft and we're pretty
    Good at the game
    Female superheroes
    Put men to shame

    Lap 18 - Round 10 - Cooking

    Women don't belong
    in the kitchen, but I
    like it here. There is
    beauty in having
    instructions on exactly
what to do. I am not
    one for creativity. Here
    is logic, and oven warmth,
    and the success of
    no remains.

    Lap 18 - Round 11 - Nature

    Lambs, like little pillows
    sunabathe next to their mothers,
    in the wood, raindrops bless
    the budding branches of oak,
    ash, sycammore. Birds
    tweet to their partners
    as they swoop for worms.

We are said to be mammals, animals.
    But with these irrelevances
    the only nature we share
    is with the carcasses
of chicks that never left the nest,
the grey of sapling trees in darkness.

    Lap 18 - round 12 - seven lines

    The big bang
    has caused nothing but

    and wallow in cosmic waters

    Lap 18 - Round 13 - Magic

    There is no magic left
    in my pencil,
    pen,
    or typewriter.
    No lovely metaphors,
    or rhyme, or
    proper use
    of line. Somebody
    give me a wand
    or a wish, for I
    cannot keep going
    like this.

    My Grandma's my hero
    Her heart is so pure

    Blind to my faults
    Sure I'll prevail

    Squirell stamps

    Lap 19 - round 7 - insect

    Moths and butterflies
are just the same to me
    two silly insects
    who think they can be
    as graceful as a dove

    Sure one has the colours
    of a chamelon, but only
    when it's autumn

    and the other one
    looks like a punched rainbow,
so I hope that the leprechauns
    put them into pots

    Lap 19 - round 10 - cooking

    The fridge hasn't been opened
    for three years now,
    back in 1989
there was a grass jelly invasion
    that settled themselves
    in all sorts of icecream
    and "brother" was born.

    Then, in 1991
    fruits started a revolution.
    Apples and bananas
    slashed each other,
    and the young strawberries
got diced in all the rustle,
    until every colour
    was blended into a smoothie
    as "brother II" was born.

Today, it is 14 October 1994,
    no battlefields have arisen
during the first flakes of winter,
    but a couple has decided
to alight the kitchen in this cold year.

    They tremble as their hands
hold on to salt and pepper:
    something scorches
at the surface of the frying pan,
and with a swirl of oil
    and sesame seeds
    "I" was born.

    Lap 19 - Round 11 - Nature

I was not in my nature to stop
and look at a leaf dancing on a breeze
    from the towering horse-chestnut tree,
or for my features to unknowingly
arrange themselves into a smile just
watching a bay foal galloping with it's mother.
Time has nutured my love of nature.
    Time and selfishness.
