Post all site issues here

    Dear Members and Moderators,

    Please compile all site issues that you come across due to the server switch here. I will keep updating this to compile the list in this first post.

    Thanks for your time and thanks for your patience with these matters. I'm sure with in due time, they will be resolved and fixed.

    Peace and Love,
    Joe

    ````````````````````
    RELATED ISSUES DUE TO SERVER SWITCH:
    1) Favorite poets being deleted after a few days
    2) Poems still being seen in clubs after member leaves that club, and rejected poet's poems showing up in club despite rejection
    3) Under the favorite topics button if you have more than 1 page of Favorited threads if you try to click to page 2 or any besides the main page, it automatically takes you to the "your topics" button instead.
    4) the site is still not posting NON-ASCII characters.
    ````````````````````

    GENERAL ISSUES TO BE ADDRESSED:

    1. The voting system - Fix or discard

    2. Weekly contest -

    a) Nominations page; some poems slipping off the page (only 25 or so poems can stay on the current nominations page, ones with only one nomination sometimes disappear.)

    b) Altering the points distribution for each poem: There is a big difference between 10pts and 4pts for poems that may be almost equally worthy of a win in a given week.

    c) If possible, it would be nice to have it as an anonymous contest: Judges don't know who wrote what poem, don't know what poems other judges voted for etc. Not sure how this would work of if it were possible.

    3) Cleaning up the site: Updating the layout, etc. Including:

    a) Club lists: Old unused clubs could be deleted.

    b) New sorting category for poems: Being able to sort poems on your profile by genre, not having to pidgeon-hole your poem into sub-genres etc.

    c) The new addition to the front page as unnecessary (adding top rated poems) as they already have their section. It only clogs up the main page with the same poems over and over. A daily featured poem would be better in this space, rotated from past weekly winners randomly if possible. It would be interesting to have a different old poem to read each day. Although that might be asking a wee bit much!

    4) Security - Obviously needs updating.

    5) The newsletter at the bottom of the home page doesn't work. It would be nice if it did, even a monthly or fortnightly one.

    6) The nominations page: If the nominator won't appear on the nomination page under the poems name would be MUCH better, in order to make every poem get less nominations so that more poems will got nominated. Judges should be changed monthly for all to have their own chance to judge. Senior or not senior members must have the right to nominate poems. More than five judges must judge the poems.

    7) No member can vote without leaving a comment that explains that vote.

    8) Make it IMPOSSIBLE to hack clubs.

    9) Club managers could be granted more powers over their clubs. It would be nice to be able to delete threads and a few other things.

    10) The ability to change managers without having to start a new club or allow two managers at the same time in cases of illnesses and absence of the original manager.

    11) Chat System? Yes/No?

    12) The (c) 2001-2007 by Poems & Quotes needs to be updated at the bottom of this page.

    13) Sticking threads in clubs isn't working

    ``````````
    RESOLVED ISSUES:
    1) The rn characters (html codes)and loss of formatting when you post or edit a poem.
    2) The inability to look at "more" poems in any members account. The server gives you an erro. I have posted a temp solution to it in the recent threads.
    3) The difficulty loading new pictures/avatars....though they are sized right and are correct format...the server says they are not JPEG, although they are JPEG.
    4) Nominated poems bounce off the nomination page when the page is full, particularly those that have only 1 nomination.
    ``````````

    Janis is working on these issues:

    1) Special characters like ^a^ which appear when you copy and paste stuff from a word file, in place of " or other letters.

    2) Center feature for poems

    I learned, at Joe's expense, that once a mod edits a post the original poster can no longer edit his own post.

    I copied the issues & PMd them to Joe for him to post in a new thread, then deleted the old one to pave the way for him to redo the thread. Thanks for being patient, Joe, and thanks for helping.

    Edit: the site is still not posting NON-ASCII characters.

    Copying this from another thread

    1. The voting system - In my opinion, should be abolished.

    2. Weekly contest -
    a) Nominations page; some poems slipping off the page (I think only 25 or so poems can stay on the current nominations page, ones with only one nomination sometimes disappear.)
    b) Altering the points distribution for each poem: There is a big difference between 10pts and 4pts for poems that may be almost equally worthy of a win in a given week.
    c) If possible, it would be nice to have it as an anonymous contest: Judges dont know who wrote what poem, dont know what poems other judges voted for etc. Im not sure how this would work of it it were possible.

    3) Cleaning up the site: Updating the layout, etc. Including:
    a) Club lists: Old unsed clubs could be deleted.
    b) Moderator list: Needs to be updated.
    c) New sorting category for poems: Being able to sort poems on your profile by genre, not having to pidgeon-hole your poem into sub-genres etc.
    d) I see the new addition to the front page as unnecessary (adding top rated poems) as they already have their section. It only clogs up the main page with the same poems over and over. A daily featured poem would be better in this space, rotated from past weekly winners randomly if possible. It would be interesting to have a different old poem to read each day. Although that might be asking a wee bit much!

    Im sure there are other things that could be added to this, these are just off the top of my head.

    4) Security - Obviously needs updating.

    5) The newsletter at the bottom of the home page, I dont think that works. It would be nice if it did, even a monthly or fortnightly one.

    Colm, what newspaper? I must agree with LG, Joe, you should be a mod before doing this thing. ; )

    Well, I'd like to add some of mine, as well, if possible:

    - The nominations page: I guess if the nominator won't appear on the nomination page under the poems name would be MUCH better, in order to make every poem get less nominations so that more poems will got nominated. Judges should be changed monthly for all to have their own chance to judge. Senior or not senior members must have the right to nominate poems. More than five judges must judge the poems.

    - No member can vote without leaving a comment that explains that vote.
    - The 'all the time' favorite poems should be changed daily.

    - Make it IMPOSSIBLE to hack clubs.

    I have something in mind and I don't know if it will make anyone interested, moderators are centered in few clubs, some clubs really need a moderator to organize stuff and keep things under control, not saying 'I' want to be a moderator, I'd decline this job, actually, I have a hard year, yet few mods are needed? I don't know, do not eat me alive, I was saying my opinion. :P

  • Britt

    If there is an issue is a club that the manager cannot handle, you should take it to a mod. If there is a thread needing locked or deleted, you can send it to a mod and ask them to do it for you.

    Sibs and I are moderators and both in THE CLUB, but we don't use any of our "mod powers" in the club. Not to sticky threads, delete them, delete posts, nada. I mean, maybe once in a blue moon... that's it.
    Having a moderator in a club isn't necessary at all.
    What would be nice is if club managers could be granted more powers over their clubs.

  • Sylvia
    13 years ago

    I agree with Britt and Jane, mods aren't required in a club. A manager should be able to control their own club.

    It would be nice to be able to delete threads and a few other things.

    One thing I would like to see added to the wish list is the ability to change managers without having to start a new club or allow two managers at the same time in cases of illnesses and absence of the original manager.

    I feel too much is being made of the weekly contest for the front page, it seems to work pretty well at the moment, i used to think three months maybe a little long but considering the hassle we go through every three months to get new judges i think its about right, and as long as we have a roving judge or two that can fill in at short notice

    this week there are 25 poems on the nominations page, these have to be judged and the winners critiqued plus a few HM's its not hard to be a senior member and shows you are relatively committed to our community, not too sure i'd want to sift through 50 poems every week if i was a judge...

    Clubs dont need mods to be strong, and i think thats whats being alluded to here, our club had no mods for years but we were still very strong, if anything having mods may infact weaken your club as mods have other duties to perform.. that hasn't happened in our club but i could see how it could...

    PS cant see why Joe cant post this thread? no harm in that...

  • silvershoes

    You guys should see the amount of work Britt does for us behind the scenes! She finds loads of inappropriate screen names and avatars for us to handle, along with poems posted in all caps, etc.
    There are other members who do tremendous amount of work for us, but I will leave them anonymous.

    Joe posted this thread, which any moderator could have done. In fact, I was considering it, but I was doing just fine compiling the site issues myself that are being listed in another thread in this same forum.

    All help given to the moderators is greatly appreciated, but helping us every now and then will usually not give you the title "moderator."

    Anyway, thanks for deleting the other thread and letting Joe create another one, Larry. I will refrain from editing the original post.

  • sibyllene

    Yeah, I didn't know that mod edits made things "permanent." Definitely something to be aware of in the future!

  • nouriguess
    13 years ago

    Oh yes, it would really help! A manager should be able to delet threads in their club, or sticky thingy, dunno what, I agree with Sylvia about the two managers suggestion, made sense to me.

    Let's hope now the 'rn's disappear and then wish if half of these dreams would come true, bleh, I have a weird feeling that Janis will leave us like this. :(

  • Italian Stallion
    13 years ago

    [...mod edits made things "permanent."]

    I didn't add this to the list, because there is actually a purpose to this, hence why Janis coded it that way. It is in a way to prevent someone ignoring a moderators edit and revising the post multiple times.

    I will however add it to the list if the mods wish so.

  • sibyllene
    13 years ago

    No, I definitely don't think that has to be on the list. I guess I've just never been in a situation where it's come up before. There are probably plenty of site quirks that I'm still getting to know : )

  • Lioness
    13 years ago

    I am sure there are reasons for this but many years ago when I first came to this site there was a chat system set up in place.

    Kinda sad that its gone now.

    Will that ever come back???

    Also - I have had problems with the rn issue as well but found a way that worked for me to fix it though it needs to be done each time you submit a poem. When typing the poem in the box, copy the entire text before clicking save. Once you have copied your poem you can click save. You will notice that all the rn's are there so you will need to edit your poem. Once you click edit, select all the text that is there and delete it and paste what you copied before. It gets rid of the rn's (until it gets fixed for good)

  • Italian Stallion
    13 years ago

    The chat has been gone for a while indeed and due to many issues it had caused, but I'll add it to the list of possibilities nonetheless.

    I am sure that you all know the answer to issue #3 that Joe listed under issues due to server switch (error message, "Incorrect Data Input" when we click "more" for members older poems, but since I did not find the answer written in here, I will post an easy interim solution here, and hope the moderators will make everyone aware of how to go around the obstacle, that I discovered serendipitously(using Britt's analogy from a different forum post):

    1) Just copy the magic line below and enter the correct ID # after = sign of the person's whose poems you wish to look at:

    http://www.poems-and-quotes.com/author_poems.html?id=457599

    and Walla! all of the poems of that member appear on this page.

    OR

    2) Simply do a google search "All poems by ......." and use the link from there"

    If I duplicated this in my naivety....mods please delete this. If not, I wonder if Joe can add this soln to his own initial post on this thread, to make it easily visible to everyone.

    I am unable to change my avatar, a little help here, Joe? Thanks.

  • Italian Stallion
    13 years ago

    Images should be in JPG or GIF format and not bigger than 130x150 pixels and 20Kb. If you are having an issue sizing your image, you can PM me and I'll do it for you. If sizing is not your issue and you simply can't see your new avatar, log out, clear your history and cache, then log back in.

  • The Queen
    13 years ago

    I've done all that, but I'm still getting the same message. Has anybody tried to change their Avatar lately?

  • Italian Stallion
    13 years ago

    I'll try changing mine when I get home from work.

  • sibyllene
    13 years ago

    I know at least one other person who was having that issue, Queen. I don't think you're the only one.

    Uh oh...hopefully I'm not stuck with my "Huckleberry Finn" look forever!

  • nouriguess
    13 years ago

    I agree with Myryn. I tried to change my avatar, couldn't!

  • Sylvia
    13 years ago

    I can changed mine and until I use the Refresh button on my internet browser, the new one does not appear.

  • The Princess
    13 years ago

    Sylvia, if you're new after is about coffee then it is changed. Once I refreshed my screen you white avatar changed into another new blue/purplish one.

  • Sylvia
    13 years ago

    Yes the new one is about coffee, lol, my favorite beverage.

  • Decayed
    13 years ago

    I tried to change my avatar.

    they say the format should be GIF or JPG.. and I tried both. It didn't work.

  • The Princess
    13 years ago

    Then it's changed, Sylvia :) I've changed my avatar as well twice and it worked. So perhaps there are trouble with certain profiles.

  • Italian Stallion
    13 years ago

    Okay, all those who want their avatar changed, please PM me and I will re-size it appropriately so that it works correctly. :)

  • silvershoes
    13 years ago

    Hey Nor! Kinda missed you :)

    First try refreshing your profile page to see your new profile picture. If you're getting the message that your picture is not in jpg/gif format, try downsizing the image more and/or switch it to the opposite format. If you have it set to jpeg, try gif.
    If none of this works, have you tried rebooting your internet? Close the browser, completely shut it down, then open it up again.
    Still nothing?
    You're screwed. Indefinitely.

  • The Princess
    13 years ago

    Thanks, Jane, same here actually.

    I was wondering if new accounts are facing the same issues since it seems some problems vary with accounts for some unknown reason. Did any one try creating a new account and checking? If not, Is anyone willing to kind of try that?

  • Italian Stallion
    13 years ago

    There is nothing wrong with the avatar system, it is simply a re-sizing issue (it's always been testy with the sizing of images). If you're having issues and want to post something, please pm me and I'll get it to work for you.

  • sibyllene
    13 years ago

    Another thing to keep in mind is that the pictures have to adhere to both an overall size, and specific sizes on the horizontal and vertical dimensions. That probably doesn't account for all of the issues, but I know I've had trouble with that before. I've had pictures that were smaller than 20kb, but that might have been 140 pixels on one side, for example. It's fussy.

  • Hellon
    13 years ago

    Not really an issue but...just wondered about last month's 'favourite'poems list...

    http://www.poems-and-quotes.com/favorites_poems_best.html

    Is this list compiled by how many members place a certain poem on their personal favourites list or what?

  • A lonely soul
    13 years ago

    These issues have been resolved, per JANIS, as of today:

    1) The rn characters (html codes)and loss of formatting when you post or edit a poem.
    2) The inability to look at "more" poems in any members account. The server gives you an erro. I have posted a temp solution to it in the recent threads.
    3)The difficulty loading new pictures/avatars....though they are sized right and are correct format...the server says they are not JPEG, although they are JPEG.

    He is working on this issue:

    4) Special characters like ^a^ which appear when you copy and paste stuff from a word file, in place of " or other letters.

    Three cheers for JANIS. Hip hip hooray!

  • silvershoes
    13 years ago

    Thank you, Lonely Soul!

    THANK YOU, JANIS!

  • Italian Stallion
    12 years ago

    Hellon, yes, that list is compiled based on how many members have added that poem to their favorites list.

    Yes, thank you, Lonely Soul, for listing those. I will also add those to the resolved list in the first post. :)

    And thank you Janis for finally coming around and doing these much needed updates. Now keep up the great work ;)

  • Lofallenve
    12 years ago

    I am completely unable to post poems. :( I don't know why. Shows up as being deleted.
    I can't even edit my poems to make changes.
    I tried making a new account, still doesn't let me do anything. I can submit quotes and that is about all i can do. :/

  • A lonely soul
    12 years ago

    Joe: The issue below has been fixed this morning, per pm from JANIS. No more "kick off" of the nomination lists.

    "Nominated poems bounce off the nomination page when the page is full, particularly those that have only 1 nomination. "

  • silvershoes
    12 years ago

    With more than a page worth of nominations, the judges will sure have their work cut out for them this term.
    I'm so grateful Janis came back.

    Lonely, I wonder if Janis thinks you're a moderator? LOL.

    Some of this talk is making it difficult to find site problems and their solutions. Try to stay on that subject from here on out.
