The fairest way to break a tie would probably be if the site randomly picked one of the poems, based on nothing but judges' points. I -think- it is based on non-judge ratings, but we can ask Janis when he's around next, to be sure. If it is based on ratings, I'd say that's not the best way, but it has to be chosen SOMEhow, so I guess whatever works. We'll figure out: 1. How it actually chooses, and 2. Whether that's the most fair way. It would be nice if there didn't have to be an extra judge, though.

    Thank you Sibs...I'd appreciate that.

When I looked at Thistle and Awash yesterday both had three comments and four votes prior to Awash winning and that's all I was trying to point out. Last week I have no idea which of the 4 poems tying for 3rd spot had the most comments/votes.

Jordan...this has nothing to do with people downvoting in general, we all know this subject has been exhausted over the years. All I was saying was...some people tend to receive more comments/votes than others and, I don't think that should be a factor when judging which poem is more suited to the front page.

  • Jordan

Ah. Well if that's the case I guess it's random...in which case it's even more fair if you really think about it.

Since it's only poems that people notice and like that make the original list, I do think that poems reaching the front page has everything to do with votes/comments in a way. This would point to the fact that site picking the most well rated poems makes a whole lot of sense.

  • Hellon

Mmm...I don't know if I really understand what you'r saying here but....I'll give it a go...but before I do let me just say...I don't have a problem with Danny's poem...or Sybs having two wins...IMO they are up there and all three poems have my approval (if that means anything to anyone).

Ok....I can take any member from The Club as an example....they are all very good poets as far as I'm concerned but...they do not rate the highest each week (every week actually because they very seldom comment/nominate each other) in comparison to other clubs and...that's a good thing because when these poets win...they deserve it but...if someone from The Club and someone from M&M...who do nominate/vote their own members were in a tie situation and...the member from The Club had the lesser vote because it's members backed off from voting and the site...calculating the comments/votes selected the inferior poem...would that seem fair?

It's as fair as it's going to get, right now. I'm honoured to win every time I do but nobody on here should write just to get on the front page. No one should expect to either. The poet that doesn't 'win' shouldn't feel disheartened by the fact they didn't win but should just be proud they received the same amount of votes as a poem that did win got.

Hopefully they will get lucky another time. It's upto the other poets to support/vote/comment on their favourite poems, not on their favourite person's.

Lol out of topic I am sorry, but Hellon did you ever think of becoming a lawyer ?!

    it suits you

  • Hellon

Do you really think it's fair Danny? I'm not going on your previous wins...in the past or recently...I have no problem with a win that is clean and dry but...I'm just debating two poems that had the same scores and why one went through apparently because a computer chose it...last week there were four and I wanted to know how the final selection was made then also....it's only a question...never meaning to get everyone on red alert.

Did I ever consider being a lawyer?...I worked for one for many years....that was enough haha!!!

I think what I'm really trying to say is that the issue of "fairness" in a made up contest on a website is not worthy of any debate because it has no effect on anybody's life. I really do not understand why you keep posting about it and for the most part saying the same thing over and over even though you've been given a clear answer several times.

Anyway, that's all I've got to say regarding the issue.

OMG...is someone whispering in your ear about a mod position?....how things change.. how people do to...my question hasn't really been answered...Sibs...is going to ask Janis some questions...I'm willing to wait for these answers to my questions...Don't let a little power go to your head son (I'm suspecting you're a judge now...) please don't let it change you....

  • Jordan

Power? LOL, you're nuts. I don't see anything to do with power in this thread. Someone whispering about a mod or judge position or whatever...no. I'm just starting to feel like there's an unnecessarily loud echo in here.

Now, I expect you to retort and defend yourself. Feel free to accuse me of anything else - you've already ticked 'power', 'mod', and 'judge' on your checklist (just as a reminder). I can tell that you like your lasts words, so I'll be the gentleman and let you have it this time.

Janis popped in for a moment yesterday, so this was the first thing I asked him. Haven't heard back yet, but he does seem to be around.

In the meantime, let's just relax and go read some good poetry. Might I suggest anything written by abby? Her poems always pair nicely with a good ripe mango or white cheese.

Awe...Jordan, the only thing I'm going to defend here is my sense of humour which seems to be a tad different from the majority..if my little stint saying Janis was considering me for an admin position has anything to go by. I was jesting about the mod/judge position and...if you took it as serious then I do apologise.

"By the end of your journey, the judge with the highest number of points will have a "Thank you" thread of their own, a collaboration written about him/her
    a total of 20 free comments/votes + 3 nominations..
    <<Cross my heart>>"

Including 3 nominations? No offense, Nana, but while I appreciate your effort I think it's a ridiculous offer.

  • Britt

I guess if the poems are nomination worthy.. but it shouldn't be just because they get a thanks for judging..

  • Decayed

Hahaha I think Nana meant poems which are nomination worthy, not randomly, blindfolded :p

and Myryn, why? It is a good offer actuall.y.

Abed, even if it's let's say a nomination worthy, I dont think it's right to pursue judges by bribing them 3 nominations and 20 free comments/votes. While it's alright to do what judges are supposed to be doing, let's also think about those judges who have Sundays as their only free time.

Oh, congratulations, Sibs and Danny, and Hm's.

  • Sunshine

I was not planning to reply to that, since it's your opinion and there's nothing to debate about it, however clearing my point of view would be better especially that there are words now such as "bribe" used which really disrespects my pure intentions.

Dear, it's nothing like a bribe, I respect your opinion however this is nothing more than a challenge for those judges, they are all sending the votes and comments on time, and even before it.

So regarding; let's also think about those judges who have Sundays as their only free time, they all vote only on Sunday and ain't supposed to do so before Sunday anyway, whether they were free or NOT. point is, we do not want the comments and votes done or sent after Sunday ;).

And it's good to give an award for that person who's organizing his/her full time and making a balance between his/her own busy life and the judging process.

Just like when joining a contest, and at certain rounds you might get bonus points for being the 1st to submit your poem in, though you may be very busy unlike others. Judging is also a challenge (in my opinion ofcourse), to prove your dedication, commitment, and how far would you go to show your seriousness.

So to call it a bribe we have to look at the personal benefits...and there are none, not for me, after all giving 20 comments is not that easy, and to call it ridiculous, sounds like a personal opinion. So nothing to add except that I stated that number of comments & nominations, because I believe whoever will accomplish that challenge will deserve whatever I offer. And those judges need something to look forward to, even if they accepted to judge because of their good will, and choice.

:) hope I cleared where I stand, and I am not trying to convince anyone by what I said, just thought to clear things up.

Whoever brought up The Fountainhead, that is an excellent book and you should read everything by Ayn Rand. Just saying.

  • Larry Chamberlin

I'm sure she meant 'bribe' in the sense that parents offer 'bribes' to their kids for getting good grades. In that case the word has a patronizing connotation rather than something improper.

Personally, I'm careful about offering something that will cost me so much time & effort, but I cannot imagine how it would or could be construed wrongly. You are a person whose integrity has proven impeccable. Thank you for running the contest and thank you for dedicating yourself to getting the job done in whatever way you see fit.

  • The Queen

Thank you, Larry, and that was what I meant.

"they are all sending the votes and comments on time, and even before it. "

"they all vote only on Sunday and ain't supposed to do so before Sunday anyway,"

^These are two different statements, Nana. So it's ok to send in their comments even before Sunday? And let's say they all do this on Sunday, what about the time difference?

Your intentions are good, Nana but promising 3 nominations right before reading their poems is beyond my understanding.

Judges are meant to be true to their obligations without being too competitive than necessary. In this case, is it appropriate to run somethng similar for the mod squad and see how fast they fulfill their duties?

  • abracadabra

Yeah, any contest that offers bonuses for "being the first in" is discriminatory against those in a different time zone. And nominations should never be a promise.

However, rewarding judges with comments is a very kind thing to do. I could never do it because I dislike being obligated to comment on poems (unless I'm a judge myself). And I treasure comments from people more when they weren't under duress. But a comment is always a treat, so good on ya, Nana.

  • Sunshine

Is it appropriate to run somethng similar for the mod squad and see how fast they fulfill their duties?
    ^

yap why not :D! except that mods remain the exact mods for a very long time, and if they delayed accepting a member one day or two for being busy it won't do much harm, like delaying voting for poems for the weekly contest, that will appear on the front page of the website :)

And there ain't no different statement, what I meant by "even before it" was early on Sunday, so even if judges were free before Sunday like on Friday, they are not supposed to pick poems yet (as far as I am concerned) they should wait till sunday incase someone nominated a poem on Friday (example).

So time difference has nothing to do with it, busy or not busy they all have only Sunday to vote and comment, and I offered whatever I did because I see it suitable that way, we can debate about this for weeks, we see things differently, and I doubt I will add anything else. Examples can be endlessly given on both sides, yours or mine, but the result is one, that's how I am running this, because I see it adds to the judges enthusiasm. That's all about it, simple and clear XD

  • Narphangu

Hmm... I like the "collaboration poem" idea, but I think the rest sounds a bit silly.
The way we trade comments and nominations around here is like silver and gold... It sounds like we're essentially buying their services, and I'm not sure that comments and nominations are things that are meant to be or even can be divvied up in return for hard work.

But. That's just me, and it looks like you guys have figured it out anyway.
