Drink a night time cup of tea
    (it helps make you sleepy)
or just lay in bed on the phone
    or reading a book

    I agree with above too.

Drink a cup of night time rum, that usually does it for me.

I'd agree to Blackstars suggestion about the music, though it'd have to be something that takes your mind off of those things rather than makes you think about it even more.

I know this might be a bit weird, but sometimes when I can't sleep I talk to a friend of mine on the phone and eventually fall asleep.

Also maybe doing something before you decide to go to bed, that will get you exhausted so that you're tired.

I play games on my phone. Sudoku usually, on the hardest level. Make my brain work and I generally pass right out.

I actually like the puppy idea. Or a cat, whatever tickles your fancy. But that physical touch can be important for de-stressing and relaxation. Whether its a person or something furry, having that other creature next to you lowers blood pressure and stuff. If you feel more secure, maybe that will transfer into your subconscious.

I'm no expert, but I bet there are mind exercises that you could do to help ensure calming sleep. Dream expert people will say that you can train your mind to dream lucidly, or dream about specific subjects. I would bet there's a way to work towards positive dreams, or no dreams at all. A little research and practice might be needed, though.

Sorry you're having troubles. It seems inconsequential in light of other problems, but a lack of fulfilling, rejuvenating sleep can be very stressful and hard.

It is said, a missed night of sleep is one more year lost to live.
What is said also and as I discovered to be true years ago is, if you are having trouble falling asleep then number one is to get a complete physical and an examination for possible medical cause. If you feel you have unsolvable problems then seek someone who can guide you through it all.
Above all else and I found this to be true, do not try to fight it. Do not lay in bed twisting and turning and trying to think yourself to sleep. If you're alone, turn on the bed lamp and read. Pick a subject that hold your interest 100 percent. If need be get out of bed and maybe write some poetry or stories. Things like that always put me to sleep. Do you have a TV in your room? If I turn on the TV I find most of the crap so boring I fall to sleep in minuets. Are you maybe going to bed too early? Or maybe you wait too long. Sometimes being overtired will keep you awake. Do you take naps in the day time? If so cut it out. Do you exercise or do some kind of physical activity? That helps also. Go for a walk or a jog outside before bed time. Could help.
If it's just some seemingly unsolvable problems or concerns then I'd say you need help. Remember everything seems to exaggerate when you're alone, quiet ,and it starts to balloon in your head. If it really gets bad it becomes distorted and false negative information will take over common sense adding to keeping you awake. Its good practice to train to change the subject away from whats bothering you save it for solvable time. Example. Bad thing, change to something good you like to do or maybe just plan a good dream out. You can with practice control dreams you know.
Sometimes just a warm bath or shower will do the trick.
    Good luck
Oh yeah one more thing, are you in love? That'll do it every time. No help for that.
    came back to add;
even things you eat can add to insomnia, or what you drink....smoking too much, drugs, medicine etc
