I think it's normal. I spent a weekend with my sister-in-law who also writes poetry and she wrote quite a few over the course of my stay. But I could not write one single thing. I tried and tried but nothing came to me. I was that way for a number of days, but once an idea hit me I had no problems from then on. I have poems that took me two minutes and then others that took me two hours or two days. Just don't give up on a poem, that is something that I never do. Well, I did once. But that was only because my sister and I were writing poems together by title and I had a hard time getting started. When I first got serious about writing I wrote poems that I wasn't satisfied with. I didn't enjoy writing them because I knew in the end I would hate it. But like they say YOU are your worst critic. Over the course of the last few months I have really started to enjoy reading my own poems. I think it just takes time. As for you thinking for a long time about a topic, I wrote about people first. I wrote about my brother, my mom, my sister, and other people in my family along with friends. I think that's a good way to start. While I was writing them they gave me other ideas. Also READ!! Reading novels, magazines, newspapers, anything will help you with ideas. Hope that helps....Good Luck! Take Care. |

I agree with you, But sometimes what i do is still my mind and let thoughts flow freely and then i write. Sometimes i will get something good and other times ill get somethin bad but it really helps to just quiet your mind for a moment or two and just let thoughts flow in freely. When you feel youv got the idea, stick with it and write! |
