...and I'm getting a little frazzled ..why can someone nominate a poem for the weekly...give it a five and not leave a comment? Yes, I know the excuses..didn't have time..will come back but they seldom do....yet I've seen the same commentors leave indepth comments on other poems...whats the deal peps?

    I'm guilty

Lol I did that several times , I do forget to go back and comment on a poem that i said I will come back and elaborate my thoughts on, even if I did not nominate...however I do leave a comment, just not a deep one. not at all.

Even when nominating one of "yours" I forgot that I didn't come back, until I saw this thread.

For me, we have a commenting thread in our club, now two, following certain strategies...so when I am available again I get busy with that..anyway I think it would be better to send a personal message as a reminder to whoever nominated and forgot to come back and explain their reasons..at least that's what happened to me in the several times I forgot to comment!

For some reason, I knew you'd say that haha, nothing much, we have threads in the club specialized for comments, doesn't have to be circulated with poems written by club members, but the two threads concentrate on comments...poems..etc Which means new poems to check, hence I "forget to remember" that there are other older poems I promised to "re-check"**because I'll be commenting new ones..

**Not saying it's a good a reason, it's just what happens, shall be more responsible I guess XD

Perhaps they just enjoyed it and didn't feel the need for an explanation. I do understand your point, but it doesn't seem like much of a real problem.

I'm guilty as well. I read a lot late at night when I can't sleep, but my phone, when typing, does this loud vibration, and it wakes Jas up. So I nominate a poem with the intention to go back later and comment... And I completely forget.

I can imagine someone being impressed by a poem, or the author (or both) and wanting the poem to be in a position to win, but for them to feel unable to find the words to describe how the poem affected them...and also what Nana and Britt said: being so busy with life that you simply forget to remember you still wanted to comment. Both ladies leave impressive comments to other peoples poems, so I can understand their reasons for waiting with the comment. It takes time to find the right words.

While it would be ideal for any poem voted or nominated on to require a comment, it seems it'd be a little unfair for people who have reasonable reasons for being unable to comment at any given time.

I don't think we need to be THAT strict.

I wasn't referring to anyone in paticular here and my comment had nothing to do with members leaving comments promising to come back and leave an indepth comment then failing to do so....if someone does leave this type of comment it indicates (to me anyway) that they have in fact read the poem before nominating it and have genuinely forgotten to come back to it.

When this topic was discussed before...ie one winning poem having 5 nominations and no comments people gave these excuses and that's what I was referring to here. The fact that it's still going on does annoy me I will admit and....it makes me wonder if these poems are being read or is it just....Oh...whatshername has a new poem posted so it must be a winner...I'm nominating it. They don't leave a comment but go on to leave long comments on other poems so....they do have the time and they do have the knowledge to write a decent comment....that's what I meant.

Since that's not how things been exactly stated ..in your 1st post, I have to say "Not Guilty", same for Britt, as far as I know.

However, I still think if someone nominated a poem without leaving his/her comment, doesn't have to be for the identity of the poet. OR cause they are friends..or popular etc..I believe we are over these stuff! But that's just me...because in ALL cases under the "vote" buttton it doesn't say, state your reasons...as much as it says here's where you vote for thee poem to include in the weekly contest (ofcourse not that way, but something very close to that)

and it's the same when we log in, as senior members, saying "here" you can help the judges choose a poem from the weekly contest by nominating etc.

I've not seen a rule saying, state your reasons, or elaborate, but although it would be nice to hear from whoever nominated, it's still up to them. Especially that whoever nominates a poem, their name shows up...so it's not behind the scenes or secretive.

Maybe for some people nominating a poem they read and liked is enough to show their opinion, and therefore they prefer not to comment, if no words might do the poem good, especially that you mentioned those same members leaving indepth comments on other poems, so we don't have to fear their honesty and ability to read a poem well enough, before nominating it.

    ^ exactly, Nana!

Sometimes there are poems that would leave you wordless, literally!! And if you comment on others' poems in-depth while you say nothing on the nominated, then probably you have a lot to say or would like to elaborate on some lines...

And with the friends voting for friends thingy, we can't deny it's not there. But I say it's up to them, a personal choice in fact; still, it shows how dishonest and playful they are.

I've yet to find a poem on this site or in any book that leaves me speechless...speechless is a cope out for...I don't really understand your poem in my opinion.

I won't nominate a poem without commenting on it, because I feel in my opinion I have read it, I feel it is worthy for a win, so why not explain my reason for that.
If I like it enough to nominate, I like it enough to comment, If I read something I want to nominate and don't have time to comment properly, I will often either leave a short comment and then nominate, and come back to it, (though sometimes we can forget, but if I love it enough I will remember I nominated it, therefore, remember to give edited comment)
    or
wait until I have the time and then comment or nominate.

I like the addition of the viewed poems, so everytime I log on I can see that I have read poems and I check if there are any I read but didnt comment on, therefore remembering I nominated it and need to comment

My opinion, sorry it's so long winded

There's something else I thought of... some of those nominating are judges, who, if they go on to vote for the poems they nominate, as sometimes happens, will have to write a comment anyway. It could be that some of these phantom nominators are people who don't want to have to write two different comments for the same poem.

I feel like this is something where it would be nice if people commented, because comments are always helpful, but everyone has their own reading and participating styles. I don't think someone has to prove that the poem is worth winning through a comment - we leave that up to the judges. If there are particular cases where people think that members are just nominating friends for no other reason besides their friendship, they can always let us know and we'll look into it. Forcing a comment probably wouldn't change that, though.

We have a lot of great poets that comment on this site, but there are some that really like the poems but isn't quite sure what to write. In time they learn what others are saying and adjust to the formula.
I don't think it should be a big deal.. most do leave comments.

  • Britt

To be honest, I've totally forgotten about that visited poems list until someone mentioned it here. Not used t having that feature.

Sib, when I was a judge I rarely commented on poems, because I found my comments while judging matched comments I originally gave. It was hard to "mask", so to speak.
