    GOOYCZ: Final Results

    Hellon:

"I think Larry may post the results tomorrow...not sure but...he'd taken his Akubra off and was wearing a top hat...ringmaster syle last I spoke to him..thinks it cool but it's lined with Fred the cat hat so...give him a wide berth haha!!! I just want to thank everyone who participated in this contest and...if you learned one form then...you are a winner in my books...One final thing..

    BUT THERE'S MORE...

Last time I visited The Shed...I managed to Blag (that's scottish for steal) some mini ladders....you know the ones you use in your kitchen?....they have FOUR STEPS...would you believe that??? and he had plenty so.....each one of you are awarded a step ladder to climb right into Chelsey comp....how good is that!!!

Thanks again guys...it was a blast...for me anyway LOL!"

    -------------------------------------

    Larry:

[Full dress tails. Steps to center of ring after Hellon hands me a giant top hat that has a strangely familiar aura (or aroma?)]

[Holds up extension rod in one hand, 4-step ladder in the other.]

    LADIES & GENTLEMEN!

After Much Anticipation, the Judges Have Spoken. I give you the SONNETS and the COMMENTS. Don't skip to the end, revel in each poem and savor the comments for each. Then, and only then, peruse the summary and CELEBRATE THE WINNER:

    -----------------------------------

Round Four Entries, Comments & Scores

First, that sonnet about the impact of doubt in your life:
    1 Renascent Doubts (Shakespearean Sonnet)

Born in the desert just like a sandstorm,
pulling every inch of strength to strike.
In the matter of seconds you transform,
from the fiery sands suddenly you spike.

Everything bows to the tone of your rage,
and time neglects its meticulous pace.
It's hard to determine what is your age,
you easily pause life for those you face.

It takes just one visit from you to plant,
the seeds for this long journey to begin.
An eternal torture is what you grant,
the weak souls of those you maturate in.

The furtive movements adopted by you,
conquers any heart without further do.

J1 This poem is a deep and thought provoking piece. Really enjoyed the message, however for me, the flow seemed a bit choppy in places... I will explain:
"you easily pause life for those you face."
"conquers any heart without further do. "
^^^ these two lines are beautiful... however, when you're restricted in a formed piece you really have to be careful with your word selection... to me, when I read sonnets I want them to flow... and both of these lines stumbled a bit while I read the poem...
In my opinion, Sonnets are difficult to write...very challenging and I think you did an overall great job... ~ 80

J2 This sonnet touched me deeply but without further ado I feel I must subtract four points 96

J3 Loved how the poet has developed the thought from starting to the end, with a smooth flow. None of the rhyme sound forced to me.
And I loved the title too. It gives a proper picture of the poem. Very well written sonnet. 10+20+25+32 = 87

    ----------------------------------
Followed by the ANIMAted illusion of love:
    2 Dream Interrupted-- Shakespearean Sonnet

When we embraced upon an empty field
The soft tempo of our hearts intertwine
    Engaging a rhythm only revealed
When the moon persuades the stars to align
Many whispers we exchanged on the breeze
Until our eyes only remained speaking
Time went on, our moments began to freeze
While above a sun is slowly sneaking
I feel your tempo escaping my chest
As dawn begins its reign over the sky
Another absence I'm forced to digest
My being can't stand another goodbye
Six o'clock a.m. my alarm clock screams
Tearing away the woman of my dreams

J1 This truly is a beautiful poem....the dream is romantic, beautiful imagery... and the ending message made me frown (only because of the sadness of waking up)The ending ties up the poem really nicely .... .... Very pretty piece~ 90

J2 This one flowed flawloessly and the sonnetform was an added bonus 100

J3 What a lovely piece, beautiful imagery, smooth slow and an ending that tugs at heart.
//Many whispers we exchanged on the breeze// I so loved this line. A very artistic visual .9+20+26+35 = 90

    ---------------------

Racing across your screen, James Dean's own spiritual heir:
    3 Death Race

Pedal to the metal then slam it in four
    Adhering rubber to steaming pavement
Smoke filling the air with the engine's roar
    Unforgettable scent, strong and vibrant
Cruising on mountain roads without a care
As rock and roll music blasts through the noise
Relish the feeling of wind blowing hair
At home behind the wheel with unknown poise
Lights flash, sirens blare, a Smokey is there
Dust trail behind, the world becomes a blur
Tampering with the law, powered by fear
Blistering speed, headed for the slammer
Curve off the road to an old mountain trail
A single soul chose death, instead of jail

Smokey - Old American slang for a police officer

J1 I found this poem unique and fun... It reminds me of the old rocky mountain drag races.. (moonshine runs)...I could picture the race in my head.... Very nice piece...90

J2 A sonnet that also reads like a ballad written quite well 99

    J3 Indeed speed kills,
//A single soul chose death, instead of jail// the last line is very touching.
I loved the narration, very descriptive, the reader can imagine each scene clearly.10+20+25+27 = 82

    --------------------------------------------------

Nest we slow down the tempo with that timeless sonnet to the discovery of the end:
    4 Unforgiving

    Tonight's dream was the choreography
of every moment I described you as
an acoustic city; your rib cage has
a sailors compass and maps modesty,
your language as unknown as honesty
and fierce like the identity of jazz.
Tonight was the last time I saw you as
    the morning after curiosity

    the familiarity of a scent,
the brush strokes in Monet's garden of France,
a thirty dollar cottage not for rent
housing an avalanche of starving ants
yet home to this unforgiving sonnet...
and the beauty of decay in romance.

J1 This poem blew me away...
The mixture of nature tones, art, romance, music and sadness all within a metaphoric sonnet, Is elegant and just brilliant.. LOVE this poem~ 100

J2 I always hate the forced rhyme criticism so I will take the blame of losing something in the translation of these complex metaphors 97

J3 The imagery in the first stanza is very interesting and creative.
//your language as unknown as honesty //
//and the beauty of decay in romance. // these two are very thoughtful lines.10+20+25+32 = 87

    ------------------------------

And finally, that ode we were privy to hear of a beloved elder's passing:
5 The Sonnet of the Sun and Shadows
    (Petrarchan Sonnet-Italian Sonnet)

These old feeble eyes weep 'neath raven's call
As thunder's distant edge doth touch the sand,
Born shadowed mist drifts, burning skies and land
As time flows in whispers, only to loll.
And through thorny dreams, cruel sleep shall crawl
Drowsing in the webs, of thy trusty hand.
Meadows blooming daisies shall wake and stand
A rising of breath for all big and small.
Mists melt into rainbows, from far and wide
As mountains of green tip blue painted skies,
While the moon slumbers ,'neath the breast of dawn.
Rays red as roses blush from the moon's bride.
As sprouts on the hilltop all start to rise,
Until the sun's curtains are slowly drawn.

    (Petrarchan Sonnet-Italian Sonnet)
The first 8 lines is called the octave and rhymes:
    a b b a a b b a
The remaining 6 lines is called the sestet and I used -
    c d e c d e

J1 I felt like I was dancing In a rose garden under the moon alone, feeling sadness within such beauty while I was reading this beautiful sonnet....I adore this piece...very nice~ 95

J2 I see no reason that poetic license should limit archic english to english based sonnets and i liked this one 98

    J3
This is an amazing piece, each line is filled with lovely imagery that kept me captivated from start to end.
    Brilliantly written. 10+20+27+37 = 94

    -----------------------------------------------------------
    Scoring totals:

5 The Sonnet of the Sun and Shadows [95+98+94=287]
    4 Unforgiving [100+97+87=284]
2 Dream Interrupted-- Shakespearean Sonnet [90+100+90=280]

Actually I thought all the poems were outstanding and did not enjoy looking for the nit picking flaws, but figured that is the name of the game.
