Judge Recs

Please suggest your best choices for judges.

We use your suggestions to ask full term and substitute judges. In the past 5 months more than 20 members acted either as regular or subs. There are three regular judges in place, but we've exhausted your last panel.
    Thanks guys.

I wrote a WHOLE damn page about why I nominated members and it logged me out. My browser should really be ashamed of itself.

Now just names, because I'm mad:

    The Prince
    Jordan
    Mera Luna
    Mrs Rhymes
    Everlasting.

    Grrrrrr.

Also, do please accept or decline if your name is listed. Let us know if you would offer your services for a full judge term or would prefer to be listed as a sub judge/back up.

I wanted to nominate myself but thought it would be not allowed here. I have so much free time and I think I'll do the full judge job perfectly without being late or anything.

A few people have asked me about the process. Here is the general information for new judges. I hope it helps you to make up your mind, and at the same time, let everyone understand what a judge does.

If you accept and are at some point promoted to "expert" (cool title for judge, sort of like "consultant" instead of employee):

You will see new tabs on each of the contest entries: 10, 7 & 4 points respectively. Take care not to hit one carelessly, because you cannot take back a vote. Especially take care not to hit them while scrolling down with your cell phone (done that!).

Read all the poems nominated. Beginning mid-night Friday PnQ time nominations cut off, so there will be no new poems to read.
By end of day Saturday (PnQ time) select your choice for the top three, vote accordingly & write a comment for each of those three. Send the comments to Nana (Ms. Sunshine) & copy them to the PnQ Mod Account.

The format for your comments should be:

    Poem by Author (# [points])
    Comment

The Identities of the judges are known only to the Mods & Nana (who is the Contest Manager). Remember not to let anyone else know you are a judge [you're Spiderman, not Iron Man - keep your secret identity!).

Nana has her own Draconian instructions. DON"T mess with the Sunshine Lady!

Hope this explanation helped cloud your coffee.

    Yes, Britt is right.
Voting in the weekends is still possible.

  • Larry Chamberlin

    Ach!

Britt, were you in Hawaii & was it still Sunday PnQ time?
Abed, I assume you mean nominate.

  • Britt

Yep, it was still Sunday for pnq too. I've been able to since Janis made the last change. I mentioned it before but no one noticed lol

  • nouriguess

Then why could I nominate poems on Sunday? I made a mistake and pressed the 'vote' button instead of 'comment'. I was too sleepy and sweating to see things in front of me, haha, and I thought what a relief that Janis has forbidden nominating on Sundays. I can remember very well. That's so odd since it's only me that I could!

  • Sunshine

Well even if it was sunday night, it won't really harm much, judges are supposed to be done voting and commenting by Saturday night...but ya weird.

  • nouriguess

People, I COULD nominate poems this Sunday. Don't overlook me, haha.

I nominate Jordi, too, have I mentioned that?

So it seems like we've been having a lot of problems with judges not being able to vote/dropping out/being flakey without reason. Are people totally opposed to going down to 3 judges?

It's a long, tedious process to pick out judges that can and will last, and then having sub/back up judges etc. Maybe I'm crazy but I think 5 judges is a lot and after a while you get people who end up judging all the time due to the time they're able to spend here. If we knocked it down to 3, we probably wouldn't run into the problem as much. The only thing would be not as many HMs, but I don't think that'd hurt anyone - a judge can still just as easily give an actual comment on the poem.

    Just tossin' ideas around.

  • nouriguess

I kind of like the 3 judges idea, there will be no tie to have to be broken and we will need less sub judges.

Let's just begin with 'what if's. What if one of those judges somehow is 'being not able to vote/dropping out/becoming flakey without reason'? We will have 2 judges, then? It would be, in my opinion a very lame, unchallenging contest without the varity of tastes we used to have.

What if people just start to doubt the honesty of this whole contest as it only does contain the opinions of 3 judges?

I am really sorry to say this but, for me, I have lost all faith in the weekly. :/

  • Britt

No, I'd still think we need backup judges in case one of the three can't fulfil the duties. Even the most dedicated people have things pop up in their lives, so no need to penalize em for it. But the likelihood of all three constantly dropping for a week or two is higher with more people.

"What if people just start to doubt the honesty of this whole contest as it only does contain the opinions of 3 judges?"

It's three judges for three months, another three judges the next three months etc. I don't know what two extra people we have now would bring to it that would change credibility. I know people who don't trust the contest right now and we have 5 judges. lol

  • nouriguess

Oh, haha, Britt. Now I'm reading my post again, I sound so much more frustrated than I really am in it! ;)

I don't know. I guess those who aren't free enough then why accept? If it was a matter of a week or two then okay, it really can be understandable, but not for a whole month or so. Being a judge doesn't give glory at all, haha, on the contrary, it is a responsability, a big one. So why do people accept if they are not ready?

Not my intention to sound arrogant or offensive here at all. I didn't mean anyone personally. Just sayin'.

  • silvershoes

I think the idea would simplify the weekly contest in a positive way. I usually don't state my opinions on matters like these so early on, at least not on the main forums, but in this case, I'm gonna go ahead and say I totally support giving the idea a chance.
It's one thing when only mods and Nana are aware of the mess, but clearly it's not staying behind the scenes and it's spilling over. A change needs to be made. 3 judges, not 5, with the rotation still every 3 months and with backup judges when we need them... Or just one reliable backup judge switched every 3 months. They would serve to fill in when we need them, providing consistency.

  • Britt

No you're not coming across that way (to me), and I hope I'm not seeing..I don't know. I'm just throwing brainstorming out because from talking with people and seeing the constant comments of "xyz judges dropped out AGAIN" or lack of comments/votes etc, something maybe needs to change.

I don't know why people wouldn't accept. Maybe they don't realize the need to read all of them? It's really not THAT time consumsing.

I get when people have a week here and there. For instance, I wouldn't have been able to judge the last two weeks because of my wedding and honeymoon. If someone had an event planned or something they know would keep them away and could tell Nana/the mods ahead of time, makes sense, no big. Even getting sick and unexpectedly missing, I understand that too. I don't know if the judges always dropping now are the same judges each week. It just seems like something right now isn't workin'.

    ETA:
" A change needs to be made. 3 judges, not 5, with the rotation still every 3 months and with backup judges when we need them... Or just one reliable backup judge switched every 3 months."

I like that, a reliable judge switched every 3 months. One you could always trust with buttons.

With three sets of three votes/comments, it's also easier to track as well.
