So, as you all know, this site is Poems-AND-Quotes, but the focus is mostly on Poetry. SO (and with full knowledge that we can post our own quotes to our accounts, and some of us may), I've decided to create this thread for us to share and discuss some of quotes we've heard recently that really spoke to us.

    So. Share and discuss. GO!

"Tobi ga taka o umu" is a Japanese proverb that translates to "A hawk born of a kite"

It means that an extraordinary child can be born of even the most ordinary of parents. This quote to me, means that any of us, no matter how humble our beginnings may seem, have the ability to become something more than where we came from. This quote drives me to become the "Taka", the hawk, and fly much higher than any person who settles to be no more than a kite (Tobi).

    It is very beautiful

The way I read it, is that you do not have to become your parents, you do have a choice. If, say, your parents are prone to violence and abuse and you are born out of them, it is not 100% sure that you will turn out to be an abusive parent/ person yourself. You could also find you have it in you to rise above it all and be the best parent / colleague/ spouse etc. ever.

I define extraordinary as being an exceptionally good person too, not just as in succesful or gifted in a way that makes the cash register ring!

I mean the kite's ability to wing itself to a hawk
or there may are gates, opening from kites to hawks
from one coherence of uniformity to another,
from one absolute to the other, on the hinge of an observing turn.
The guy is a seer that is for sure; that is why the subjects of his observations are so fluent.

    Here is one in Portuguese:

Guarda-te do homem que nao fala e do cao que nao ladra.

    In English, it would be:

Keep away from the man who is silent and from the dog that doesn't bark.

I'd like some thoughts on it.

    Karla, I'd rather say:

Stay away from the man who barks and the dog that is silent!!!!

I love this thread, Nevi. Will share some once I have time. Thanks for starting it!

Abed, it does make sense hehehehe

I really don't know what might be the problem with a silent man. We- Brazilian people- are strange he he he

Most of our proverbs say:be quiet.

  • Nevi

I like your take on the quote about the hawk, Ingrid. I agree that you don't have to follow in your parents footsteps. and I also agree that being extraordinary can mean being a good person, as good a person as you can be! :)

Karla, that sounds like the phrase "It's always the quiet ones" haha.

  • Ingrid

    Thanks Nevi/ Taka:)

Karla: in Brazil people are always very talkative, right? So if one is quiet, he could be up to something (bad)? That is how I see it..I could imagine having a quiet person around in a room full of outgoing people could make them suspicious..

    My mom's folk wisdom:

"Never tell your children not to put beans up their nose."

Karla, your original quote works in the sense that you get no feedback & do not know what to expect. The silent man & silent dog may cause you to feel confident and make a complacent approach, yet each may prove dangerous. A barking man on the other hand warns you away the same as a barking dog.

I like the quote about kites & hawks. However, since kites are still raptors, I think it deals more with not pigeonholing the child based on the parents.

    Osho said:

The real question is not that if life exist after death
    a) the real question is if you exist while you're living.
    b) the real question is if you are alive before death
    c) the real question is if you are living before your leaving
    d) the real question is if you are living after your leaving.

1_ do you like the quote?
    2_which one is Osho's?
    3_which one would you prefer?
4_which one do you think I prefer?

A few quotes saved on my computer. Just the tip of the ice berg.

"Life is nothing but a competition to be the criminal rather than the victim." - Bertrand Russell

    "Ever eating, never cloying,
    All-devouring, all-destroying
    Never finding full repast,
Till I eat the world at last."
    - Jonathan Swift

"Money is the barometer of society's virtue." - Ayn Rand

"Man is a credulous animal, and must believe something; in the absence of good grounds for belief, he will be satisfied with bad ones." - Bertrand Russell, Unpopular Essays

"It is useless to attempt to reason a man out of a thing he was never reasoned into." - Jonathan Swift

"There are certain queer times and occasions in this strange mixed affair we call life when a man takes this whole universe for a vast practical joke, though the wit thereof he but dimly discerns, and more than suspects that the joke is at nobody's expense but his own."
    - Herman Melville, Moby-Dick

"The urge for destruction is also a creative urge!" - Mikhail Bakunin

"Those who restrain desire do so because theirs is weak enough to be restrained."- William Blake, The Marriage of Heaven and Hell

"The vulgar crowd always is taken by appearances, and the world consists chiefly of the vulgar." - Niccola Machiavelli, The Prince

"If life -- the craving for which is the very essence of our being -- were possessed of any positive intrinsic value, there would be no such thing as boredom at all: mere existence would satisfy us in itself, and we should want for nothing." - Arthur Schopenhauer, The Vanity of Existence

"The people that once bestowed commands, consulships, legions, and all else, now concerns itself no more, and longs eagerly for just two things: bread and circuses!" - Decimus Junius Juvenalis

"I do not love men: I love what devours them." - Andre Gide, Prometheus Illbound

And last but not the least.

"Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster. And if you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you." - Friedrich Nietzsche

"You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you."

This is a small part of "Our deepest fear" by Marianne Williamson

I often think about her words, because I have often encountered people who tried to make me feel small. We even have a saying in Holland that says "Act normal, that is good enough", by that they mean to say, you should not try and become better than any other person. In Holland, the one that makes a fortune will always be reminded of his humble start in life. The complete opposite of the American way of life, where a man who starts as a newspaper boy and ends up a millionaire is considered a role model. In Holland, they would whisper behind his back: "Who does he think he is, that former newspaper boy"

"Life isn't about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself."
    George Bernard Shaw

"I wanted a perfect ending. Now I've learned, the hard way, that some poems don't rhyme, and some stories don't have a clear beginning, middle, and end. Life is about not knowing, having to change, taking the moment and making the best of it, without knowing what's going to happen next.
