Movies about Poetry

I was just thinking of the movie "The Raven". It's about the few years before Poe's death. I'd recommend you watch it, it's a good movie (though with some gore scenes that might not appeal to some people) and it actually made me dig deep into Poe's life and the mysteries of his death.

Anyways I felt like I'm interested to know those movies about poetry. I only watched this and "Dead poets society".

    Anyone?

Sylvia (2003). About the life and death of Sylvia Plath. It's so so, but worth watching as a poet and fan.

Little Ashes (2008). Underrated film about the famous painter, Dali, with large features of his friend and poet, Federico Garcia Lorca. Wonderful movie! Don't read the reviews.

    You really should! :)

These two sound really interesting, a few people told me my poetry is like Plath's, not sure if that's a good or a bad thing haha.

I studied Lorca at uni, I'm going to download the two tonight. Thanks a lot!!! :) I really needed this!

There's also Freedom Writers, I loved that movie a lot!

    He was Spanish poet Abed.

Dead's Poet Society is my favourite one but Sylvia is good too.

    Two I have always loved:

Cyrano de Bergerac (Mel Ferrer won the Best Actor Oscar for the title role)

    and

A Fine Madness (Sean Connery as a "mad" poet in his first post-James Bond role)

    Forgot great ones:

Dr Zhivago (Omar Sharif's Best Actor win, Julie Christie as Laura; the Russian Revolution as the background. The absolute best poet hero ever filmed)

I'm Not There (2007 about Bob Dylan - played by 4 actors, including Cate Blanchett, Christian Bale & Richard Gere)

Shadowlands (Anthony Hopkins plays CS Lewis with Debra Winger)

You're all are going to laugh at me for saying this movie... as it's not really about poetry, but the main character writes a poem in the movie..

10 Things I Hate About You

I remember I really enjoyed watching this movie years ago... and I watched it recently and remembered how I wrote my first poem with the same title when I was 13. Just wanted to share that :)

Pinky I was thinking the same thing, HAHA. That's where I first learned about iambic pentameter, because she asked the teacher and he got mad and sent her to the principals office lol. Then I had to know what it meant!

  • Chelsey

I could quote that whole movie!! No worries, I will spare you all from the typical , simple rhyming poem she uses...

Ughh r.I.p heath ledger....I miss him!

  • Larry Chamberlin

Double connection to poetry since it is a modern version of Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew

Larry i've aways loved Cyrano de Bergerac but the Gerard Depardieu version

Was it Mel Ferrer's father Jose that won the oscar for that movie (1950) a bit before my time but couldnt find anything about Mel in it?

    ^^^the 2006 version of this thread :)

Can we include music and art in this thread because...I think they all come under the one hat...

Mr Holland's Opus....music (Well music based but...did have another story within)

Lust for Life...Art... One of the many stories about van Gough....Kirk Douglas was quite brilliant in the role of Vincent IMO.

    Thanks Hellon :)

There's also Limitless and Ghost Writer. I didn't really like Ghost Writer but Limitless' plot is impressive!

Yes, Nicko, I meant Jose Ferrer won the Oscar for Cyrano.
He was a great actor: Cain Mutiny, Gideon's Trumpet

At least you did not say you preferred the Steve Martin version.

    EDIT:

If we're going beyond poetry into films about other arts, then I recommend THE HOURS about Virginia Woolf. All three ladies are astounding, but Kidman is amazing.

    I looove Woolf!!! :)

Have to disagree here. The Hours is horribly pretentious, slow, depressing, and forced. It was painful to watch.

  • Larry Chamberlin

Well, at least you had feelings about it.

    Also: Moulin Rouge (2001)
& the black comedy Love & Death (Woody Allen) (1975)

Films I haven't seen that appear interesting:
    Before Night Falls (2000)
    Little Ashes (2008)
    Black Butterflies (2011)
    Kismet (1955)

What does anyone know of these films?

  • PinkyPrincess

Britt and Chelsey - lol I love how we all thought of the same movie! And I miss Heath Ledger too! =( have you noticed that his daughter looks exactly like him?!

Larry - I had no idea it was a modern version of a Shakespeare play... that's awesome!!!

If we're talking Shakespeare I remember the movie "She's the Man" is a modern version of "Twelfth Night." I love that play and the movie helped me understand it more lol!

  • silvershoes

True, at least I had feelings about it :)

Also, Shakespeare In Love is another film about a poet (duh, Shakespeare). Gwyneth Paltrow is decent in it, but the movie is nothing to write home about.

The Steve Martin version was a shocker...no worse than shocking, they ruined it....

The 1993 version of Shakespeare's "Much ado about nothing" has always been a favourite, Emma Thompson is superb.

Also the Scarlet Pimpernel made in 1982 with Anthony Andrews and Jane Seymour another favourite

  • Larry Chamberlin

You are so right about Steve Martin's version - ARGGH

Re Shakespeare Movies, Henry V (1989) is fantastic.
Kenneth Branagh is the best in the role since Laurence Olivier.

He was also the director of Much Ado
