    The Usefulness of Fire

    by Alysia harris

    I ate the words

    warm from your mouth.

So wet they couldn't burn properly.

    I lit other candles.

    Opened a bunch of ovens

    around the house

    and wounds.

    Baking or cauterizing

until the walls slid away from each other.

Until we slid into each other

and didn't know where to pull from

    to disintegrate.

    Smoke pouring from

inside. How do you hold it

    like a pregnancy,

when your center is a flame?

Can I really incubate ash that long?

    I've had no

    success with phoenixes.

    Midwives, warted by wisdom,

told me that is what I should pray for.

    Brilliance, Light, Rebirth.

    Isn't the bird a kind

    of tearing too,

    a ripping down of sky

    after first reaping itself?

    Gather all the candles together,

    the ones for reading,

    the ones for heating,

    for loving by.

See if they can't burn down your voice,

if they don't make of you a bold barren

    absence.

    See if there

    is anything left

    they didn't

    suture.
