Dreams Come True?

I know many of us dream of doing something they desire in universities to pursue eventually as a career, yet others get involved in majors that do not cross roads with their dream majors for certain reasons...

So, did you do the thing you always dreamed about? Or not?

    ---

When it came to me, I was confused between certain majors that I like much: Acting/Directing & Medicine, so I will be choosing the latter because art in Lebanon do not make bread. Yet still, I know that my heart will ache me for not doing the other thing that I like more!

    What about you?

    Nice thread.

Wanted to be an Aeronautical Engineer. Wanted to build rocket engines for a living. Since 5th grade I've been crazy about joining a space program. Got sick while preparing for the exams. Missed almost 4 months of studies. It was serious, my blood pressure was 180/90, heart beat 120+. Suffered dizziness, blackouts, Nausea. It was nothing but doctors appointments, every day. Had high amounts of sodium. Could not cover the missed sessions in the last months. I barely passed the exams. In my country, one can take admission via the management quota. You know, paying money. But we did not have enough, still don't. And the problem with my health was water shortage. I wasn't drinking enough water and the sodium wasn't being flushed out of the body. To this day my mom hasn't let go of the assumption that it was all the junk food that got me into trouble.

I went for my second love, Computers. Finished with my Bsc.IT last year and currently pursuing my SAP training. While in college in my first year, I appeared for national aptitude examination for talent search , scored second highest in my college and got offered a sponsorship for a course GIMS(Global Infrastructure management specialist) from the Indian Institute of Hardware Technology.

Just for fun, I am designing my own GUI (graphical user interface) for a phone and a model body. And discussing developing an OS (operating system) with a couple of friends.

What I regret even though the situation was out of my hands. I was offered a job in L&T, but I did not have the physical result in my hand. The results are first announced online and then after a few weeks the result is provided. I got my result a week after the deadline for the interview. They did not give me a second chance. Getting into L&T would have been life changing.

But, but but but. At times, life rewards you with bigger dimes. I got offered a job in the company that my father and my uncle work with, in Oman. My dad has contacts in L&T in Oman, and he passed on my resume to his contacts, and they loved it. I cant join there as a fresher, will need a year or two of experience. Then, my dad's boss saw it and offered me a job.

Did life turn out to be excellent? ..I'll say I am satisfied. Missed out on a social life, but worth it. Never been too social anyways. Life seems stable for now.

The law was always my passion, but I took off time after undergrad & wound up in sales & marketing for 13 years. I've never regretted getting into law at long last. The past 27 years have been my most fulfilling.
Although I've always retained strong artistic desires, I practice it as a passionate addendum to my career.

Mine did last night, I collabed with Chelsey......

(sorry chelsey I know that was cheesy, just had to do it !!!)

Seriously, My dreams in a proffesional sense are unfulfilled at the moment, I thought I wanted to write novels, I have written two, but I am not happy with them despite what I have been told by a few select readers, Then this poetry lark came along three months ago, I was asked to write a poem for a funeral of all things, then I found this site and I am loving it. I am on it everyday for 6 hours or more

I have time on my side to fulfill my dreams.

The only birthday wish I remember is wanting to become a professional snooker player, safe to say, that has gone by the way-side. Thankfully plan B will soon be realised. I'm expecting my letter of admission to Hogwarts any day now.

I think my dreams have a conflict of interest: some of them want me to be ordinary, some extra-ordinary. I guess the real dream would be to achieve both

On a related note, people might be interested to watch this (its applicable to all areas of life not just sport)

'I was confused between certain majors that I like much: Acting/Directing & Medicine"

^ Maybe you could do both! Some of the smartest docs are also talented, in many other fields, but rarely go out in the public to show their talents...just because the Profession demands modesty and privacy. However, like Dr. Oz, Drew Pinsky, Mauricio Heilbron (Untold stories of the ER)Laura Schlessinger, Ruth Westheimer, (last 2 are psychologists, not real MD's), you could have your own " TV drama/show"...let's see "Abed's ER, stories never told before).. hAHA! I think you can hire Yaki, and she could be your co-production manager.. she has good skills with names, story telling and more...you know.
On a more serious note, if you have the patience, persistence and a real desire to go in the field of healing arts, you would always have job satisfaction and an urge to learning which will be insatiable. But, the flamboyancy will have to be in the backburner, until school is done. ;)

Right now I feel like I'm on track to doing what I would most want to do, career-wise. I want to work with old manuscripts, and this school path is definitely a start.

Apart from that, though, I feel like the majority of my most earnest goals are things unrelated to a normal job. I've still got places to go, things to do, stuff to learn.

Being an EFNP, I'm naturally good at lots of things, but I find it difficult to choose one path and stick with it for long enough to be very successful.
Psychology and forensics is a big pull for me, and has been for a few years. That's the direction I'm headed and hopefully will continue to head.
I also have a passion for biology, medicine, and animals. Too many dreams, too little time.

My apologies for butting in again, could not resist some more comments, as I see some talented people searching for their ultimate goals.

Gaurav (Vi...): Now I know why your comments are so analytical and discussions read like a thesis, well researched and deep (in a good way).....a "computer guy" ahhm...most such folks I know have no interest in poetry...too mechanical minded (cut & dry), but I guess when combined with the original desire to be a "rocket scientist" I can see why you have the "imagination." And, your comment......"Did life turn out to be excellent? ..I'll say I am satisfied. Missed out on a social life, but worth it. Never been too social anyways"...I would say, never too late in life for this, you are not the only one. I did share some of your early dreams, (testosterone powered) but differently...wanted to be a "test pilot for the airforce/space program as a "Mr. Biggles" comic fan. But, am I glad, my dad and someone else let me see the other choices in life....and I have no regrets today on the choice I made either, like yourself. Or else, the "test pilot" in me could have "crashed and burned" on my first "test flight."

Sibs: You have a natural talent with words, so perhaps you would do very well with literary arts as a major..perhaps English Literature, history. Law/journalism is also a field where people who have a way with words and know how to twist them well/make a losing argument a winner, (e.g trial lawyers, politicians, bureuacrats) is another field which may be to your interest. May be one day we will see Professor/writer/pulitzer winner Ms. Sibyllene. :)
    ---------------
Jane: What the heck is EFNP? I had to look up this word on Google, and I found 2 acronyms:
    Extraverted Intuitive Feeling Perceiving (psychology)
EFNP on Urban dictionary....HaHA, could not stop laughing...I will let you check this one out.

If I have to guess it is the first one, as you allude to psychology
[EDIT: Corrected my own ignorance. EFNP is the same as ENFP, a personality type. Aha! Soft hearted, intellectual, serious but with a WILD side, flip a switch and they can be like "drunks", psychodramatic (=role players) but not melodramatic (=histrionic), value and live for friends but easily abused by them.......sounds like a "glove & hand" fit! Ain't it Jane :) ]

So, when you combine these interests with Biology, Medicine and animals.......uhhhmm...you come up with a Veterinarian!! one who can read animal minds and therefore what they suffer from ;)
This page will tell you how much they make: http://www.bls.gov/ooh/healthcare/veterinarians.htm ........just a little less than a high end hairstylist.

So, if you exclude the animal science, one can be an expert in forensic medicine (Jurispudence)pathologist/criminologist, OR combine it with Law, and debating skills (my perception from posts) and we have a criminal/prosecution Lawyer, or Professor, OR combine it with Medicine and compassion (human or animal) and we have a popular Doctor! Even a "Shrink"....though they are my least favorite when thinking about the intellectual hierachy in that field of science. I think a deep soul searching of one's potentials is in order. :)

I'd never be a bureaucrat... you take that back!

Ha, it's a little late to pick a major - I graduated in 2010. I was philosophy and humanities. But I AM back in school for a graduate degree. This time I'm studying to be a librarian. Woo books!

  • A lonely soul

C'mon, you are already a bureaucrat, aren't you? A PnQ moderator...with power to kick all of us around! haha! Maybe take up Mrs. Clinton's job, and we will only have poetic wars in middle East or anywhere. The poetry will blow peaceful winds over turbulent emotions.....what do you think Abed, Nana, and the talented folks from out there?

A librarian...so you want to read all the books you find your hands on...uhmm (kind of a little underwhelming, ain't it?).. don't you think it will be more befitting to share what you have read/learnt with the young guns, still in grad school...I think of you as a Professor of Humanities, Literature or a Writer/Poet which you already are one....though the latter two will not pay much unless your book is a bestseller. but, if you truly go for Library science, visit the "Library of Congress" in Thomas Jefferson Bldg facing the Capitol bldg., if you haven't already.....I was simply blown away by the size and operations and the architecture (amazingly beautiful inside) of the buildings when taking a tour 3 weeks ago. This is the place to be, the World's largest collection of Books!!!

And it is never too late in life to pick another major....I know many, personally, some who had a mid-life crisis and took up another field, a more difficult one :)

Hehehe David, thanks for the idea. If Yaki doesn't mind, then okay....

I don't think I can combine both majors though. It's impossible in Lebanon because I'm in a public university, so it has a fixed schedule. You cannot change any hour. :P
I know a female doctor who's now an actress, but I guess she didn't study acting. A producer saw her somewhere and gave her a role; she is talented in his opinion.

Still, I can trade visual arts for writing! I'm writing a script for a series now, and I'm on the way to finish my 1st novel! so that would satisfy me art-wise.

Regarding Sib, yes, she is diplomatic, so why not?!

I'm currently studying a Bachelor of Creative Arts with a double major in Visual Arts and Graphic Design. After I've finished this degree I will (hopefully) be continuing to study a post-graduate degree in Education. I have these insane urges to create and I'm sure a few people on this site could attest to my madness, I get very edgy if I'm not keeping my hands busy.

As a creative arts student I am always picking subjects to make our majors and sometimes when I see the Creative Writing subjects I feel a little twitch in my heart. If I could major in a third area I would definitely pick creative writing but for now I'm lucky enough to be able to incorporate writing into my work. At the moment I am working on sculptural pieces that have to relate to the body so I'm pulling fragments from my poetry that speak of the body and forming constructed visual representations of these poems. Abed, I guess what I'm trying to say is if there's a will there's a way ;)

ALS, thank you for noticing some of my traits. Means a lot.

I will have to say, being an INFJ personality type (which I try confirming on a regular basis, by hitting up all personality testing sites that I stumble upon), its a drawback that I am somewhat, socially, awkward. I enjoy meaningful conversations and most importantly stimulating ones, or else I tend to drift off to daydreaming :P

I prefer one-on-one relationships over a group. I come off as a serious person somehow. But I am more like Chandler from Friends. Of course, once I am comfortable with whomever I am conversing. Do not engage in activities that involve going to clubs/bars/pubs, etc. Do not like drinking or smoking (prefer possession of my senses and a control over my thoughts and actions). Not into the whole dating culture. I'd rather wait for a nice partner and settle down. I enjoy detecting patterns in everything and find common connections that bind the metaphysical entities as one. Technically assessing activities. And apparently, am too sensitive. And may be main forums isnt the place to open up. :P

Anywho, test pilot would seem to be a wonderful job. The adrenaline would be awesome. Soon enough you'd be able to tolerate as much as 6 G's. Very few pilots can withstand about 6 without gear and suit. My younger brother wanted to be a commercial pilot, but the expenses were adding upto approximately 120,000$ +. Do not have that kind of money.

Life isnt all Disney land. Compromises, do help us become stronger. And ones priorities do change after having children. Holding a new born in ones arms literally is life changing. The most important function is taken up as, being able to provide for the family, spending time with them, cultivating love and nurturing. Oh and I am talkative too.

Dreams... I always dreamt of becoming a well-known poetess. I always failed in those Arabic examinations at school, though. Not proud of it but I worked hard and then, found out it isn't my thing. So, kept writing as a hobby!

I am studying Pharmacy now, working 18 hours a day for money and I am planning to build my life. I am saving huge lots of buckets to buy a bigger house, a car and a husband, haha. Yea. That's what I am dreaming to be, a successful woman, career-wise.

I might travel with my man once we are ready to Spain. He loves it.

    And...ya, that's it!

I had such a fucked up childhood, honestly I grew up just wanting to be normal and not like my parents. That was honestly my ambition for a long time as a teenager. One by one my cousins and siblings ended up with the same problems my parents had and I had this real fear in me there was a genetic weakness in our family that I would never escape.

Turns out I did, or perhaps I was always different. In any case that dream did come true because I made it out and I was the only one who did.

Current dreams lie before me with opens arms. Remarkably, too many to easily choose from.
