Freed of of Speech?

  • Hellon

What does this mean to everyone? Do we have the right to say what we feel regardless of the worry that it may offend others?

I'm not talking about members on this site....more I'm thinking worldwide with all the media outlets we have today....google/youtube etc....should these medias be monitored and, if so, by whom?

    *

Freedom of Speech of course....my computer has been idol for a week and so have my fingers so forgive the title :)

The last time I was sure there was no such thing as freedom of speech was in Wall street.

  • Hellon

OK....just for you LP...I'll call in Freedom of Expression.

I'm confused. The last time our teacher explained the difference between expression and speech, I was confused. What's the difference between them?

Oh, Thanks... I remember now ;)

    -

Okay, back to your question... I think most medias are monitored, but the difference is that the limit of censorship varies between a country and another.

    > Should we say whatever comes to our mind?
I think not. It may be disrespectful, and it might cause chaos, if we are talking politics wise.

  • Hellon

I'm just talking in general here LP...well....maybe politics comes into it. I read a book while I was overseas that brought this question to my mind so...thought I'd throw it out here to see what others thought. Although the book was a love story it was based around the time of the Russian Revolution where...not only was it extremely dangerous for some to voice their own opinion for fear of repercution but...also...many were discriminated again solely for the language they spoke.

  • nouriguess

Yup, guess you could talk bout anything and everything, but most of it must be true. Unlike what's happening here.
Media applying well-studied agendas and everyone is blabbing. Chaos.

  • Hellon

I know some things are blocked from certain countries..does anyone think that's fair?

  • Max

Some secrets must remain untold cause they might cause chaos and some other must be shown to people so they know the truth
so I think it is fair that somethings have to be blocked

and freedom of speech I think you are free to say what u want as long as you don't hurt others with your words

  • Hellon

Some secrets must remain untold cause they might cause chaos and some other must be shown to people so they know the truth
so I think it is fair that somethings have to be blocked

Secrets? In the media there are no secrets...they make a lot of money out of extracting the truth and....in some cases distorting it I know but....do you believe the truth should be blocked from countries/people...you?

and freedom of speech I think you are free to say what u want as long as you don't hurt others with your words
    ^^^^

Isn't this contradicting your first thought? I mean the truth hurts...but...if it's the truth then....it's still the truth....right?

    *Edit

Sorry Max...when I re-read your post I think you meant your answer to be on a personal level? Would you shield the truth from a friend..perhaps to save them from hurt? but....I was really talking worldwide here?

  • Karla

I know some things are blocked from certain countries..does anyone think that's fair?

    NOOOOOOOOOO, IT'S NOT FAIRRRRRRRRR.

It is horrible to live in a society like that.

  • Hellon

You live in that type of society still Karla? When I said that I was really thinking of China where I think they bloke even hotmail and google etc but....I've just come back from Indonedia to find there was a riot in Sydney with our muslim population regarding some video that was posted on youtube....4 countries were bloked from seeing it and Indonesia was one of them so...I had no idea what was going on until I returned....I really didn't like that and...I was only out of the country for 5 days!

  • Decayed

Yeah, the video was a total failing attempt to mock our Prophet and blacken his crystal-clear page.

too bad... awful production... awful-er actors... Jack & Jill was the worst movie of the year... but this was even wors-t-er

    * edited: lol, the point from what I said is that the people behind the movie are trying through media to make the relation between Christian & Moslims worse.

  • Nema

It surprised me to know that Shakespeare's work was banned in China for some time (Mao's rule).

I believe in any kind of freedom so long as it doesn't step on other's feelings or rights.

  • Britt

Hellon I don't really believe that the "movie" is the reason. People seemed to have organized really quick. I feel it was planned.

I have seen all kinds of things making fun of God and Jesus Christ, belittling Christianity, even here on PnQ. There are movies and tv shows out there making fun of my religion (Family Guy instantly comes to mins/d), but you don't see utter chaos and riots over it. Somethings off. And if it really is over a stupid YouTube video... Well I will keep my comments on that to myself until I can censor it a bit lol.

I think that it should be monitored to an extent, but not what it is now. Or maybe the wrong people are monitored, at least here. And for countries that full on block access, that's ridicukous and I can't even wrap my head around being in a country like that. It really is sad.

  • Karla

I lived Hellon. We couldn't read some books, newspapers, watch some films, speak against the government and etc. It is over or so it seems.

  • Max

    Well Hellon
mostly truths in politics are lies so in my opinion media cause chaos cause they tell lies to people as if they were truths

and no it what I said didn't contradict with what I said above it because
when I said secrets I meant matters that stay hidden by the government or the politicians some of these things must remain hidden
    as like in the following
If the media said that a famous person is a thief how much will he be affected officially and socially?
officially not affected at all cause usually media never give their sources so nothing prove what they say but on a social level it will affect his reputation a lot cause sadly many people follow what media says without making sure if it is truth or lies

so the media was free to speak but in law when they spread a rumor about a person without a proof, he can sue them until it is proved right

so here comes what I said is right
"I think you are free to say what u want as long as you don't hurt others with your words "
which means you can put yourself under the law's hand if you hurt anybody with your speech without proof

  • Britt

Max I think you're talking about slander, right? As in journalists are free to publish negative stories on people, so long as it's factual/true. But to slander someone and make things up about them (in reality, our tabloids lol) is where it's not okay.

  • Nicko

Censorship creates ignorance and that's why we have so many problems worldwide.

The Muslim riots in Sydney were appalling and we are told something similar is being planned in Melbourne. Why? because of freedom of speech, As Britt said every religion is mocked. If I don't like it, think its ignorant I may stop watching it. You are not forced to watch or agree with it, walk away. Why transform that into violence and why bring it to another country, Australia opened its doors to many countries of many religions, is this how we are to be repaid? All it does is build hatred and mistrust. There is even a call to stop Muslims immigrating here as many seem to bring their problems with them. Only last week the police arrested some Muslims here on charges of planning terrorist plots. This just drives a wedge deeper into the anti Muslim sentiment.

which I think is the objective of the Muslim extremists...

  • Max

Yeh that is what I was talking about this subject
cause I thought Hellon meant the media freedom of speech and it's not only your tabloids Britt it is a worldwide problem in all the countries in the world u will find that media says only half truths and the rest are lies

and Nicko I as a Muslim is hurt by that movie cause it tell lies about my faith and I stand for my religion cause my religion is my Principle in life
but those people who made riots and killed innocent people who had nothing to do with the problem itself
aren't defending they are just hmm destroying that Principle they say they defend even more and I regret that like other millions of Muslims do,
If u want to see somebody who stood up for Islamic religion after that movie
check what some Muslims did in London as a reaction to that movie and u will see

sorry for being so long =P

Hiding under a false blanket of freedom of speech to justify a direct insult to whom we consider  the greatest human being to ever roam this earth, what do you expect?
If that is the case then I for one will turn a blind eye to the indiscriminate
Out pour of violence which is an inevitable result by some very ignorant people who don't represent me or my religious entity what so ever

They teach your kids this at grade 6, it's called cause and effect

Maybe you should stop being stereotypical

  • Hellon

Well....I think it depends on how you view things Rabia. I didn't even watch the whole video even although ...I was able to when I got back to Australia...something I couldn't do in Indonesia and...I very quickly dismissed it as black humour. As Britt has stated....fun has been made of other religions in the past...The Life of Brian comes to mind but...even before that...my fellow Scot (Billy Connelly) had a fair crack with The Crucifixion. As I said....it depends on the individual...I thought The Crucifixion hilarious....wasn't to keen on The Life of Brian but....nobody went on the street to riot or protest....The Life of Brian was banned from certain countries even back then but...it only made it more appealing....think it may even have won some awards. So what I'm saying is...you have a choice...don't watch it if you find it offensive....laugh at the person who produced it because it is so wrong..(if you have a sense of humour?)...people still have the right to freedom of speech/expression and....I'm a big believer in that.

    * Edit

According to what I've read, the person behind this video clip is of Israeli decent?

  • Max

I agree with you Hellon it depends on the individual
and again I agree with you
if it was ignored by Muslims in the first place things would have never reached this
and Long ago some Muslim people said about that
what means " Ignore the rumors and they will never spread "
so Rioting isn't the right way to response to that movie
simple ignorance would have solved all the problem

Edit:Hellon if you mean with people have freedom of speech that people have the right to make fun of other people's beliefs and religions then you are right

as I stated before you are free until you hurt somebody and this movie hurt billions

  • Nema

I have not seen this movie nor am I interested in seeing it. Being a Muslim, I wouldn't have curiosity enough to want to see it if it will provoke me and make me angry, and I guess that's what people did. They got angry and behaved stupidly.
What people did here in Egypt, Beirut, Libya and Sudan is just pure crap that contradicts with Islam in all ways. If I'm angry at anything, I'm angry at the reaction of these people. This is just sad.

Has any of you read the novels 1984 and/or Brave New World? Speaking of censorship and the media, I found an outstanding comparison between the two novels, here:

    http://www.egodialogues.com/2009/aldous-huxley-george-orwell/

Do check it out if you have time, it's amazing, whether you've read the novels or not.

For how many years have jokes being going around about the Scots/Irish/Americans/Australians and....a whole heap of nations that I haven't mentioned. Not to mention....religion....jews/catholics/prodestants...even the good old amish have had there fair share of jokes aimed at them in the past....look...I come from working class Glasgow where many Indian and Pakistani people migrated to in the 60's....these people can actually tell better pakky/turban/b**ckman jokes than any Glaswegian...Why? because they learned very quickly they had to get a sense of humour or they'd be isolated. Back then...no one intended for jokes to be taken seriously and...that's the difference my friend....I would say that your religion/people take yourselves and the rest of the world too seriously....do any of you actually have a sense of humour....come on...someone tell me a joke about a muslim because...quite frankly it would be the first I've ever heard!

    *Edit

Answering Max's post...Nema obviously posted while I was typing my reply.

  • Nema

I'll have to agree with Max, Hellon. I'd never tell a joke about Jewish/Christian people. After all religion is not a joke, or at least shouldn't be taken as a joke.

  • Hellon

My opinion is...if you're the first to laugh at yourself no matter what the situation you're already in a winning position.

  • Nema

[You] were brought up this way, others weren't. See my point?

  • Hellon

Yes....well we all have our habits. There's a joke in there somewhere for the humerous among us :)

I have not seen this movie nor am I interested in seeing it
    ^^^^

Just as well...Egypt is one of the countries that has been blocked from seeing it.

  • Max

Again Hellon I will tell u
I make fun of everything conected to me but not my religion and I would laugh at every joke about anything but not my religion
and I dont make fun of anything related to others so in return I only need my religion to be out of joking area cause for me it is nothing to laugh at

  • Hellon

So Max...what do you laugh at? Know any good Irish jokes? What about the Irishman...the Scot and the Jew....know any of them?

  • Max

Not really I don't pay attention to such jokes but I know many many Arabic jokes
which by the way makes fun of my own society no from others
I think Nema might know what I am talking about cause she is from Egypt as well

  • Max

    Another thing
I would laugh at a joke made about the Muslims but not about the prophet or the religion itself

like u can make a good joke about how some Muslims act now as a respond to the movie and it is already done and it was really funny

  • Hellon

Ok you guys...I'm listening....spill your jokes but...before you do..here is a little sample of what I consider humour....well....it didn't get me rolling on the floor or anything but....it mocks us aussies....has a slight bite at religion and....well yeah....other things I guess but...it would be considered very innocent and unoffensive to everyone here...

Why was the Christ Child not born in Australia ?
    >>>
    >>> You'd have a job finding three wise men, much less
    >>>a virgin

There will be many attempts to blacken the Moslim's page, one of them is irony through media...

I mean there are people who want to deliver some false and ugly messages to the public about Islam, and they want to do that in a, what do they call it? 'sophisticated' way... to say: HEY! We are just joking. Damn it. This is not humor, Hellon. This is Sickness. Are you people out of jokes to mock religions? You should come here, Hellon. We have so many comic shows where I live, and every night, I laugh my ass out. They do not mock religions. Geez. It ain't funny.

    Religions are no jokes.
    God is not a joke.
    People are the joke :)

As I said, there will be many attempts more... First, this person from Denmark who drew crappy caricatures of our Prophet. Then, this crappy video also about our Prophet. I wonder, what will be next?

Yes well....I'll take that as sarcastic humour Max but....I heard that one before....tell me a real joke yeah?

  • Max

    Well said Abed

well I suck at translation but as well as Abed we have many comics in here which do nothing with religions and they are funny

there was a one I saw yest and considered funny

"Some Muslims went to protest saying that Muslims are no terrorists so they killed the American Ambassador in Libya"

I know it seems harsh and seems like they are saying the Muslims are actually terrorists but no it isn't it just means that killing innocent is wrong
