As I know, this was a trend in Egypt and some Arabian countries before 5 or 6 years ago.. But now, hopefully, due to literacy and Islamic teachings, the thing is hardly ever done again....

Parents used to believe that the removal of the female genital clistor halts her sexual desire... hence... sinning with men and losing her pride and honor...

The last time I watched that on TV was from a very long time ago. I guess it's null in the Arabian part of the world now....

with respect to other regions, I have no clue why it's still done...

As Abed said it was a Trend in Egypt since Egyptians ever existed but now law forbid that and Islamic teachings too forbid doing self harm and it is one kind of self harm

so we had a 95% of doing that in the last 8 years it became 39% and we hope it will reach the 0% soon =)

(all the information above are related to Egypt only I dk about other countries)

It's hardly self harm? An infant has something done to it's body without consent?

Like her mother or father is responsible for that kid
    I didn't mean self harm
I meant causing harm ( my bad sorry ) some girls died because of that so it is a bad thing to be done

Can I just make something clear here before we go on....my title said genital mutilation and...although the link I provided was about females I've always wondered why circumcision (male genital muntilation) has never raised much concern? Is that fair?...both infants are put under the knife for no particular reason....

In our Islamic societies, it's not about fairness.

Boys are circumcised due to hygienic reasons. Because the extra skin of the penis makes a good cover for bacteria and urine... I watched it on TV once.

Regarding girls, it's not done because of hygienic reasons but because as I said above, clistors are the source of sexual ecstasy that leads to orgasm, and if they were removed, people used to believe that women wouldn't run after sex and their desires.

    This is the contrast.

LP...I think you may have read what I said wrongly so here it is again...

(male genital muntilation) has never raised much concern? Is that fair

what I was saying or trying to say is...yes...males are circumcised for various reasons..here in Australia hygene is one of them...nothing to do with religion but....no one bats an eyelid about that and yet...it still could be considered genital mutilation...right? When someone tried to do similar with girls it seems to be an issue....why?

If we accept one as normal...why not the other? what's the difference?

In male it is of no danger cause thd removed part isnt a nerve end and it does no much bleeding but for girls it can kill

There's a big difference between male and female circumcision. Although boys don't have a say in this procedure (thus making technically wrong), it is not nearly as dangerous as female circumcision.

Removing the clitoris or any other part of the vagina is a very ugly procedure and has worse long-term effects with regard to sexual pleasure. The removal of foreskin on a male does have an effect on sexual pleasure, but it is not nearly as bad.

From what I've read, there are a few different types of these mutilations, too. One involves sewing closed the inner labia until the woman is married and ready to have sex with the purpose of conception. This could be 100% fabricated, though. Not sure.
