Hey guys, I just have a problem with pronouncing some of the poetic forms' names, could you please guide me to how to say them?

    Kyrielle
    Pleiades
    Quatern

I've used these three in my poems but I'm still having problems pronouncing them lol.

    Thank you in advance =)

LOL just as long as I can pronounce something! :D these poetic forms sometimes have really weird names, although I loved the Pleiades when I knew its meaning! :)

A lot of their origins come from various countries so....I guess we all struggle to pronounce them Nema....as long as you can spell it hey..yeah?

You're right, it's just that my book signing is less than a week away and I'm trying to sound so..uhh..well, you know :D

  • Hellon

Well....it's all in the accent...mine is very harsh...quite like a german accent so...if you're looking for something softer maybe an english accent would be better? If I was buying a book from you (and I'm assuming that's what you mean) I'd really just like you to have your own accent....it's probably sounds real cute?

Hahaha you have to hear the Egyptian accent someday :) it's hilarious English. Many of my friends have problems pronouncing the P as B and vice versa.
And yes I meant my own book :)

There you go (just click on the speaker icon next to the bold word.)

    - Pleiades:

    - Kyrielle... not found... but I guess IT sounds french, and most probably it sounds like: Key-r-yell

    - Quatern: not found also... but I guess: Kwa-turn

There is a university in Beirut, Nema, where almost all of its professors are Egyptian, and my friends there tell me about the P/B issue :P They mock them hard. But I know how that sounds. Cute, yes!

Nema...a lot of countries.nationalities have problems with b and p and to me...it seems strange but I do know what you mean. I've lived in Korea on and off and they too have huge problems with these letters to the extent that you'd be driving on the freeway with overhead directions telling you Busan was 50 Ks away and the next one would say Pusan.....very confusing haha!!!

Anyway....Good luck with your book....just have a glass of water handy and...if you get mixed up take a quick slug...that's a sip BTW.

Hahahaha hilarious! So I'm glad it's not only Egypt. Abed the reason for this is that teachers used to tell the students the strong one is the P not the B, stupid education, but on the bright side Korea's like that too so yay! haha!

Thanks Hellon :) I'm so freakin nervous and trying to sound cool lol. Hopefully it'll turn out good :)

Btw I've had an English test with a Scottish teacher once and I loved her accent!

I believe P would be the stronger of the two...I never noticed that before but....yes....in my language which is english of course...P would be more promenant....other english speaking countries may disagree of course haha!!!

Poor you...trying to learn english with an accent that everyone thinks is alien!!!

  • Nema

Well, they teach them the the B is the strong one but the students think the P is the strong one and then it's all a mess haha.

It's okay I don't mind this because here everyone invents their own accent haha, so as long as you understand what I'm saying, what the heck! :D Besides, my accent is more American than British and the likes, though Australian accent is probably my favorite!! :)

See...I was wondering if you would go there...you have mentioned 3 countries that you probably could pull off their accent but....we all have different accents within our country so...when someone says..oh yeah they had this accent...I say well which one? I could pick a couple of american accents but uk and australia....I'm really quite good at pinpointing them to their own location....

I think the P would be stronger... put your hand up near your lips and say "puh" and then "buh." The p has a bigger puff of air and requires a bit more effort. But maybe that's not what is meant by "strong."

As for the forms, I would say

Kee-ree-ell (basing that off the pronunciation of kyrie eleison in church)
Plee-uh-dees (how the star cluster is pronounced)
    Kwa-tern

Black jack is the only American Wiskey worth talking about: Jack Daniels Black Label, Ole # 7

Hellons pronunciations were spot on to how I pronounce them.

    EDIT:
Actually, there are a number of Bourbon Whiskeys that are good, but JD is the only sour mash I like.

I do like American Honey, a sweet liquor made by Wild Turkey.

Scotch, though: I should start a thread on that!
