Who is smarter?

Okay here is a thing been in my mind for a while now and I can't find a proper answer for it
who is smarter a man or a calculator and why?
I mean we created calculators but we now relaying on them totally does that mean the calculator became smarter than us?

  • Hellon

    Neither Max...Women are smarter haha!!!!

  • Max

Lmao should I add the Hu before man? ;P

  • Hellon

Sorry Max...I was only mucking around...let me try to answer this seriously now :)

You are in charge of the calculator so...if you put the wrong numbers in obviously you will get the wrong answer back...right? If you put the right numbers in they are much quicker in their calculations...doesn't mean they're better.

Two gripes I have about them...

    1) When I go through the checkout and my bill comes to $20.75 and I hand over $50.75 most kids have no idea how to calculate my change...if I hand over $51 they totally loose it....this generation cannot count mentally...

    2) I just could not believe my children were even allowed to bring calculators into their exam rooms!

Edit...Max I can see you are developing a certain sense of humour now...sarcastic/ironic or something else but, let me say....I like it..

I don't think that the word 'smart' can be applied to calculators or everyday computers, as they require input to work.

Computers with advanced AI on the other hand could be called 'smart.' Although at this point I think they still require a large amount of human input in order to function. I think calculations have to be organic to be smart (ie. there need to be components of consideration, reflection, and perception rather than just straight 2+2=4 thinking).

  • Hellon

    ^^

That's what I was trying to say Jordan....thanks for making it sound clearer...what does AI mean BTW?

  • Max

Haha Hellon we live to learn right?;P

I agree with you most of my age people use calculators to do any mathematics sum it sometimes makes me go crazy like 2X8 they might use calculator in this -.-

I didn't mean smart in the word's meaning I am just wondering why we don't learn to do maths with our minds instead of using these calculators doesn't it make you wonder if it is better than you?? although you are the one who made it in the first place

  • Jordan

Hellon, it means artificial intelligence. :)

"I didn't mean smart in the word's meaning I am just wondering why we don't learn to do maths with our minds instead of using these calculators doesn't it make you wonder if it is better than you?? although you are the one who made it in the first place"

    Ah!

Well I guess we don't learn how to do math without a calculator out of convenience. Mathematics has become so advanced that there never seems to be a point in learning the fundamentals. Advanced math would be a huuuuge pain in the ass without a graphing calculator, no?

As for simple math, I often find it sad when I see people using calculators to add up 4 or 5 numbers that they have written on a sheet. That comes from sheer laziness imo. I'm not good at math by any stretch, but sometimes it's just better to use your mind - your brain needs exercise just like your body does and if you don't use it, it gets squishy and dumb!

  • Hellon

Jordan...don't we have atrifical everything these days?

Yeah Max...I understand but..we have invented a lot of things that we now look at and wonder...most are great but...are you now thinking about how the past generation got by without them? we knew how to count lol!

    Edit..

Jordan...you have edited your post and I now have to read it...just incase I look like a dill with my response :)

  • Jordan

    I guess so, yep.

This is beginning to sound like a really bad rehearsal session with one of those boy bands back then....when it all went wrong and they all sang over each other so....zip it guys...while I speak ok LMAO!!!

  • Max

Yup Jordan I study advanced math this year and you are right it is just hell hard with a calculator but without one hmm I think I won't ever solve a thing its just full of square roots and higher roots I can't get that with my normal mind that didn't have enough training on solving them, see that is the point, we didn't learn how to solve these things with our minds maybe if we did we could make something even greater but as long as we relay on calculators and computers to do our work for us we will start to grow dumber -.- cause mind need to be used to stay healthy lol

  • Hellon

Ok...just unzipped you both because this is way over the top for me but...can you solve this one...with or without a calculator???

    If X = Q andQ is negative
but Q has become positive as a result of Y
but Y is both positive and negitive...which will be dominant?

  • Max

Hmm not sure what you mean with

"but Q has become positive as a result of Y"

but if Q is negative and it turns Positive after multiplication or Dividing with Y
    then Y is negative 100%

  • Hellon

Awe...Max...Did you use your calculator? Sorry...once again I was taking the mickey..sorry...they were just random numbers and I have no idea about them ...just having a bit of fun..you will get to know me the more we speak and....I do thinkyou are picking up some of it already....

    on a serious note..

your OP was about calculators.....don't you wonder how our ancestors managed to calculate so many things without them? I mean...take our calander for example...how did that happen...looking at stars etc...but it was all documented by hand back then...

  • Max

Not really I can't get random numbers with a calculator ;P yeah you are taking me off guard and then you throw a joke when I less expect it ;P

calander was simple actually according to ancient Egyptian people they counted hours with shade first then they counted days with stars and the change of nigh and day but I am not really sure how they did it ;P ( sorry for poor English ;P )

all I can say about out ancestors that they were smarter than us for sure lol

Calculator is just a tool it has no consciousness, no smartness. Does a knife cut better than our teeth, dose a bullet harm more than a piece of rock, dose a car run faster than our feet?? yes but they all have no awareness no needs or power of decision making , they all are just tools.

  • Max

Yeah but they aren't the same at all for 2 reasons
first you made those items you mentioned for weakness in you and you said what weakness I mean but a calculator well you give it the input and you made the main rules it follows in solving yet we now doesn't relay on our mind that made it and that is my actual point from this all did we became less smarter than people who made the calculator?? or is it just our laziness?

  • Hellon

Sorry.Max...as I said...if we talk some more you will get used to my humour....

Yes, they where smarter than us beause they had to be...and that is possibly where your question evolves?

    Davibb??

yes, they are all just tools...how we choose to use them is entirely up to the individual?

  • Max

Yes Hellon here is where my question evolves to a 2 headed question

but I think we will never find an answer until we try to walk their path and start to relay on our minds more than tools

  • nouriguess

How do you expect a calculator to be smarter when a human is the one who invented it? :/

  • Chelsey

I tell ya what.....I'd be screwed without that nifty little tool...math can KMA....but with the calc, I passed math classes with C's hahah

  • L

Ah Max this went through your mind after the talk about math.

You should have thought more about the ruler, you know. Lol

Pretty cool, in my opinion... the man that invented the calculator was smarter than the calculator, those using it now a days... I have my doubts. Even if they know how use it, it doesn't mean that they know how the calculator arrived to that answer... The calculator is program with that knowledge.
The knowledge is there even if the calculator can't do anything own it's own.

So I'll say the calculator is smarter so smart that one has become depended on it. Now those who don't rely on the calculator are smarter than the calculator because they can arrive to their answers by their own means. But those who uses the calculator and know how the calculator arrived with that answer then they are smarter, but they are just facilitating their work.

On a weird thought that just came to my mind...

I think My iPod is smarter than me, I'm but a tool. My iPod uses me, no matter what, it always finds a way to attract my attention. I could be doing something outside playing or engaging in conversations or reading books but nah my iPod finds a way for me to use it. Mr. Google has become its main attraction and I can't stay away.

And you know, may be the ones that invented my iPod are smarter than me because they knew that this will be the end result that I will become a tool of my iPod and that my iPod will become my ruler but in my mind... I'm the one with the power. Without me, my iPod doesn't work, without any human touch, my iPod can't work. We are smarter than technology but I was not the one who invented it. I'm just the one who is using it or who is using who?

    Lol

Anywho, the calculator is smart but not smarter as the guy who invented it. In my opinion.

  • ddavidd

Calculator is something that is invented to ease your calculating proses. Every invention has the same purpose: to ease our lives; like for example washing machine and so on. But machines can not invent anything to save them from human beings or to ease their own lives.

  • Hellon

Sometimes I think machines have a mind of their own...the washing machine/pool pump/stove....why do they always seem to go on the blink on a Friday afternoon when it's too late to get a tradesman in until Monday? The Revenge of Technology...now there's a title for someone!

  • Exostosis

Calculators arent a self aware entity. Thus comparison with a human being with a conscious state of mind, is irrelevant.

There are humans that can calculate faster than a calculator. Certain savants can calculate problems of multiple digits that calculators cannot. Every function carried out by a calculator has been previously performed by a human being.

The reason for using calculators is time allotment. Solving a complex equation can be time consuming. And the time, especially during the examination is already short. Calculators increase efficiency. All in all, it is just a human devised machine that runs on algorithms, depending upon how complex are the functions of the calculator.

They require programming to act on a given problem. Simple calculators are easy to program. I can write calculating program in almost every programming language. In finality, humans are the inventors, creators. In case of a machine, self aware, can make better decisions and that is trained to learn, adapt and evolve. That is when you raise the question of who is smarter, a machine or a human being that has created that particular machine. And also a nice question would be, what if the machine sees humans as a potential threat?..will it hack into our military bases and launch a nuclear attack?. .blow us up in alphabetical order?. .Until then, all machines are created, invented to ease the daily tasks and increase efficiency.

Shit George...maybe I need to consider relocating to...Zanzibar?

^ And hope that by the time Z comes up, there are no weapons of mass destruction left.

  • Hellon

Surely...by the time they reached Z there would be none left but....just in case....I'm not googling possible countries that start with double Z lol!

  • Exostosis

Unlikely. There are nuclear weapons. Biological weapons. Chemical Weapons.

Russia alone, has 11,000 Nuclear weapons of which 6000 are on the ready. America has about 5650 nuclear weapons piled up. Depending upon the output yield, an atomic detonation can clean out an area from 12 km to 70 km. So, an entire city.

I doubt you'll be safe in any country. The best bet is to migrate to the poles. Targeting the poles will be the most damaging. The water at the poles has at least 50% more oxygen, and the ice melting can severely affect the currents that bring about weather changes. Sea levels will rise, low lying areas will go.

But instead of such a scenario, I am secretly wishing for a zombie apocalypse.

  • Hellon

Do you think I'd be safe if I headed for the moon George? haha!!!

Just on a side note...did you know that some of the Zombie movie was filmed in my home city Glasgow? I was there last year while it was being filmed and...although I'd love to brag that I seen Brad...I didn't but...OMG....I did get to see the scenes set up....amazing!

  • Exostosis

The moon would be quite safe, given that you can survive the adverse conditions and figure out a way to get to the moon :P

Brad Pitt in a zombie movie, there is only one in production. World War Z. I will watch it no doubt. The book is good. Anything that is from Sci -Fi will be viewed at least once, by me.

Maybe I'm getting mixed up because I've never watched it but...here's the link...

Edit...I just remembered I had a poem up here a while ago about Nasa shooting the moon so...maybe that's not exactly a safe either?

Link to the info...not my poem :)

  • Exostosis

    ^ yep, thats the movie.

And NASA isnt blowing up the moon. The consequences would be bad. They fired an empty rocket stage at the south pole of the moon, targeting a crater, because it is always in the dark side. Meaning, the presence of ice.

  • Hellon

    ^^^

Yes, I exaggerate sometimes I know but...they didn't find any so...it concerned me some that there wasn't more research done beforehand.

  • Exostosis

^ No amount of research is ever enough, will ever be enough. That is what forces us to carry on.

  • Hellon

What do you think this research was for? I mean...there is no evidence to say they found water but...if they had...what would the next step have been?

  • Exostosis

No, there isnt a confirmed evidence of water/ice present. Nothing would happen even if they had found it on the moon. Setting up a lunar base is very expensive. There are many moons within the solar system that are frozen on the surface, which means there could be an ocean beneath the ice crusts, due to the core heating it up. A good example would be Titan, Europa, Rhea, Oberon, Orcus, Sedna, etc. Even Pluto could have an ocean beneath its icy crust, which could be as thick as 50 miles. Perhaps even more.

In conclusion, nothing will be done. Not for a few decades. We need every penny to prepare for World War III. Why waste money anywhere else? :P

  • Hellon

    ^^^

Why waste the money in the first place George would be my question.

  • Exostosis

^ We will be depleted of resources soon. Must find alternative sources. Asteroid mining is a good option. An asteroid could contain materials equal to the sum of all the resources on planet Earth.

The struggle for power and possession of oil, will eventually bring a war. Why rule a city or a state when you can have an entire planet to rule?. .I think big. . .if I'd ever be a ruler, I'd like to rule an entire planet, heck even a galaxy. My very own galactic empire. 'x_x'

Jokes apart. War is inevitable. Not tomorrow, but soon. According to myths, even gods engaged in wars. Betrayed. There are the fallen ones, and the victorious ones. Destruction is imminent.

Even if we occupy different planets and galaxies. there will still be wars, probably with better weapons. But progress should not stop at any cost. The future is unveiling in forms of theories and experiments. Though I am pessimistic about humanity in general, I do have high hopes for technological advancements.
