What is Poetry?

"Poetry is eternal graffiti written in the heart of everyone."
    -Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Americus, Book I

"Poetry is what gets lost in translation."
    - Robert Frost

"Poetry might be defined as the clear expression of mixed feelings."
    - W.H. Auden, New Year Letter

    What's your definition of poetry?
Do we really get lost in translation? Can translation capture emotions in poetry?
Is Poetry a clear expression of mixed feelings?
    Can Poetry be defined?

What is Poetry at all guys?

    Hmm.

I'd say poetry is someone trying to express an idea or emotion using words that are somehow constrained by the knowledge they are writing a poem.

    That's an incredible answer Kevin.

You think so? What is your idea?

Yes, poetry is a totally inorganic and delightful way to express yourself and view the world, taking pleasure in words, images, freedom and originality. I never understood how people truly 'vent' themselves through it. When this actually occurs, the poetry is usually not very poetic at all.

Poetry is an innovate way of expressing one's ideas.

It could be vents, it could be thought out. it's original, in my opinion, in the sense that each have their own style of writing.

I am trying to think of a 'vent' poem that I found good. It is rare because anger and frustration and sadness are very common, and a good poem needs to be an effective, original piece of work. The emotion has to undergo some processing. Even at its freest, poetry is contrived. It is written for the purpose of sounding good, of causing impact.
Otherwise, you should just use your diary.

I have always thought that Mario Quintana is right when he says that the aim of Poetry is to read the reader. In a way Abracadabra is right when we use Poetry to vent. Poetry doesn't lend itself to a mere release of emotions only.I sometimes think that Poetry is like a humming bird, being here and there, impossible to capture and define.I also agree with what Alberto Caeiro wrote about Poetry:

    Rhymes mean nothing to me

Rhymes mean nothing to me. Only rarely
Are two trees identical, standing side by side.
My thinking and writing are like flowers having color
But the way I express myself is less perfect
Because I lack the divine simplicity
Of being only what I appear to be.

I look and I am moved,
Moved as water flows when the ground slopes,
And my poetry is natural, like the rising of the wind...

    Alberto Caeiro

Raw Poetry are the best ones. In its simplicity, it is "like the rising of the wind".

For me, poetry is too many things.

Fundamentally, it's a way to explain the inexplicable.

With poetry, we can twist our language in ways that would never work in natural speech in order to describe things that don't roll off of our tongues quite so easily.

To "read the reader." is profound. it is a glimpse into the sublime:
For eight hundred years they've used Hafez verses for fortune telling purposes; not in superstitious way, but due to their magical_ inspirational nature. They are mirrors!!

"Poetry is a consonant coincidence of inspiration, emotion and thoughts, in the psyche of a talent." Without emotion and inspiration poetry is nothing but fabrication.
True poets never write their poems, thier poems are written for them.
