Well.....I have some concerns????

Ok.....probably not a lot of peeps noticed but....isn't the color of this site's background too depressing? Like PnQ is designed to express feelings and release them and.....we want something to cheer us up..but every time I come on here, it's frustrating, I get even more depressed and it bothers me actually... Why not make it orangey red? or maybe.. yellow? Or we could add photographs, like butterflies...they make people happy!!

Guess we should try our best to communicate with Janis this time around, it's bringing a lot of people despair to look at the screen when it's like this... brownish and pale and ...empty.

Also..It bothers me to see people going online without posting in the forums or submitting a poem or doing anything, do they only stalk their favorite poets on here??? what's this whole feature all about in the first place??? the Account News one???

    I wonder why nobody replied..

    "I wonder why nobody replied."

Possibly because only 5 minutes went by.

Got to admit I never thought about the background color.

People hit this site for many reasons. Some, like me, may only be looking for a place to post their poems so their kids, wife & friends can see them. I was here three years before I came to the main forum.

Others are the family & friends referenced above.

    Others are simply poetry readers.

Others are looking for a poem they can write in their spouse's birthday card.

I think Noura brings up a valid point; something a bit more important than the other crap people have been complaining about lately.
The colors bring people despair... How are we ok with this? It needs to stop yesterday. I'll send Janis a message now.

  • nouriguess

Well...thank you...Jane, it's really nice to see an understanding mod on here.. if we were meant to make a new election, I'd definitely pick you, haha!!

Hey Noura, thanks from bringing this up.

This has actually been bugging me for a while. I thought I was the only one, but then I came across this old thread:

    http://www.poems-and-quotes.com/discussion/topic.html?topic_id=78087

It looks like this color scheme has actually been bringing people despair since... 2007. Yikes. That old thread actually brings up a good point: it might not just be the depressing colors, but the fact that they are also washed out and hurt your eyes. I think it's because we expect colors to be more vibrant, but something bugs us when they're not.

I would be all for tracking down Janis to see if he can give us an update. He hasn't responded to anything for a few months now, but I think he gave us a telephone number to use in emergencies. I'll see if I can track it down.

(Of course, if most people are fine with the colors, I would be fine with that too. They bug me, personally, but I'll go with the majority.)

Hopefully this thread stays civil. It's good so far, but I'll be keeping an eye on it.

I guess Sher meant the brightness??? ugh.... my point is the color itself and the whole background..like there's no movement in it..just ...brown??

and why does it say 'Hi, The Poetess' at the corner? it's annoying, we should pick names for that too!
Can't Janis just repair the whole site?

This kind of reminds me of what my nephew told his mother after she painted his bathroom pink
"Thanks mom every time I use the bathroom I feel like I'm in a fallopian tube lol

Is it just me or is the washed out essence of the pink hue a little bit offensive? It looks like a white person's skin tone, am I right?

Noura I agree with you... actually the color shceme of the site has been brought to Janis's attention way back... I do believe.. it makes me a bit nauseated.. I would like to see some color.. a bit of splash!

I do hope he will consider it...

Yes, though the Walt Disney cartoons of the 40's were not that washed out

    Except maybe "Snow White."

At least the border is more tan, Jane. At least on the left side.

I'm seeing a lot of consensus here. Since this issue has been going on for so long, I think it should be moved to our top site priority. I don't want to speak for everyone, but I'd be willing to put the other issues like the site contest aside until this is figured out. Would anyone be willing to volunteer to help the mods draft a request to send Janis? He will want details, so maybe we should vote. I'll lay out a few options below: vote for the one that you'd like to see the most.

Option A: Keep everything the same.

Option B: Something brighter, bolder. Maybe butterflies, as Noura mentioned? Here is a good example of a site that knows how to use color:

    http://www.gigglepoetry.com/

I like the amount of visual images in that one, too.

Option C: Something with more flesh tones, that better represents this site's multicultural diversity.

Option 4: Fallopian Tube Pink (Haha, Michael! But really, it wouldn't be any worse than it is right now.)

If there's anything else, let me know and I'll add it.

  • Michael D Nalley

"I guess Mike your post offended all feminines on here.....what do you mean by it exactly???"
Actually the background is a much more quiet color than a true pink. I don't recall any feminist dressing their little girls in a washed out pink . I will retract my statement to make "quieter" my point lol

  • nouriguess

'Option A: Keep everything the same.'

Well, maybe if we kept it like this, people who open PnQ anticipating to register are going to think... 'Meh, I'm not going to spend my lifetime dealing with this bromidic, characterless background, no. I would prefer to go to Gigglepoetry, they have a giggle meter.'
And this site gradually will be abandoned and arid. And members will grow old too fast.

'Option B: Something brighter, bolder. Maybe butterflies, as Noura mentioned?'

Butterflies symbolize nature, symbolize a poets real essence. I guess we should try that.
Or we could put all profile pictures of all volunteered members as a background too. Shows how a close family we are.

'Option C: Something with more flesh tones, that better represents this site's multicultural diversity.'

Do you mean to offend Arabic origins by any means, sibs?

'Option 4: Fallopian Tube Pink (Haha, Michael! But really, it wouldn't be any worse than it is right now.)'

Yes, they could be stitched along the sides. Or circled at the corners!

Lol am I the only one over here who thinks that infact the color scheme makes it less confusing :P
I have been a member of another website. Was black with shiney stuff, and then coms BLUE or PINK. It dazzles the eye.

I find the scheme very comforting to "my" sight at least :P

but don't eat me up..just my thoughts :P

"Do you mean to offend Arabic origins by any means, sibs?"

Not at all! The opposite, rather.

Edit: Nana has a right to speak her mind as well as anyone. She's just voting for Option A, even if it is depressing and soulless. Let's keep it easygoing.

  • Sunshine

Perhaps it is my color insensitivity [Mike, I thought fallopian tube pink was hilarious!] but I am astounded at the common reaction by so many members (actually, five).

Put the contest issue on the back burner?
"Your honor, I object." Argumentum ad absurdum.

Option B is fine, but not in the Mickey Mouse format of that place.

Rich colors, fine, butterflies, fine, wild tigers and blue oxen, fine. Four-year-old giggle links - please. Might as well be neopets.

Now posting despite feeling "I know better"

  • ArtistrySoul

The site could use some redesign and colour to make it appear more appealing and less dull. But its not just the site that looks depressed I think it also comes down to the fact based upon how one feels each day e.g. happy, depressed, moderate, goofy....etc

Having a technical background in IT and web sites it does take time for one to change the layout and structure of the site for maintenance, but not too long.

Why not a scheme that mirrors your needs.
When feeling down you punch a button that gives you a giggly format; when in a sombre mood, you call up umber and hunters green.

When doing acrostics it will give you ABCs with Jane and Dick and good old Spot.

NOURA: wait til the site recycles tomorrow

  • sibyllene

Well, ok, maybe not a giggle meter exactly. Though it might liven up the site.

I also like Larry's idea of incorporating neopets. Well, maybe not Neopets, exactly, because I don't think they make those anymore, but the concept is still good. With Web 2.0, social media... people want interaction, you know? They want to be able to manipulate their sites and format them to express their personalities. PnQ is in a big danger of being completely left behind. I know there are places where you can download "widget" type things and incorporate them into your site. Maybe everyone could have their own special animal avatar to interact with. Maybe they could be fed by poems, and if you don't write enough poems, they die.

(Might be a bit harsh, but it would at least get people writing.)

  • abracadabra

    Erm, guys.

Sibs, I'm normally your right hand woman, but I must say I'm a little surprised that this suggestion should be made a top priority. Sure, take some feedback, but whether this site is peach or pink will not really stress me out very much in the immediate future.

I just feel there are other issues that could deserve a little more attention than this.
