I had to look back in my iTunes for some references. I didn't have a computer when I was 17, so I can't check that, but apparently when I was 18 I was listening to a lot of Lorie Line covers of Disney songs. Hahaha! I haven't gotten much cooler since that.

I have never, ever been a "cool music person." The first CD I bought was Christina Aguilera's "Genie in a Bottle." At a 5th grade sleepover, I was all "Who is Britney Spears?" I owned the Creed CD, for goodness sake.

    No shame, man. No shame.

17... oh dear that would have been 50 Cent's glory days.. so probably him. I'm trying to think of the songs that would've played at high school dances, and I just keep hearing the 'to the window.. to the wall' song. Low? I don't know the name of it anymore.

Sibs I'm with you. The first CD I bought was Backstreet Boys or NSync. The first CD I bought without my parents approval, I was 13 and got Limp Bizkit, ha!

    When I was 17? :P

    A year ago... you mean...

    ADELE (Album: 19)

The Script (Albums: Breakeven - Science & Faith)

    and... Eminem.

I still listen to those :P
the only difference is the addition of Lana Del Rey.

    ---

I started listening to English music though maybe at 13 years of age?

I remember the 1st song I memorized by heart, it was for "Pussy Cat Dolls" LOOOOOOOOOOOL.

    It says something like this:

    Dolce & Gabbana
    Fendi & Nadonna
Karin They Be Sharin all their money got me wearin fly, brotha' I ain't askin', they say they love my.....

    blah blah

WHY would it have to be my 1st songggg? :P

Then, I started listening to Taylor Swift... and Eminem and American Idol artists....

  • Britt

LP I think that song is actually by Fergie..
    Either way that is hilarious!

I used to sing Tim McGraw's songs when I was a little kid, and I'd always say we're "living on refried beans".

Hahaha. I do that a lot... If I don't know the actual lyrics I will make them up if they "sound" right.

  • Decayed

Oops. lol. I thought Fergie back then was with Pussy Cat Dolls.

Yeah, it was for Fergie & the black eyed peas then...

hahaha, yeah, inventing lyrics is so fun! especially if you're singing a dialect that's new to you!

  • Britt

Pussy Cat Dolls were the "Dontcha" people, ahahahaha. I'm going to have that stupid song stuck in my head all day now.

There is a Fergie song that I usually rock out to on road trips, I can't think of it now. Jason and I usually listen to 90's and early 2000's rap music (Ludacris, DMX, Eminem, Tupac etc) on road trips for some reason. It's a new tradition we're doing apparently lol.

Jason is the new Weird Al... seriously he comes up with the most disturbing ad libs lol

    woo hoo

**edit, I was also a big Bowie fan, although it wasn't cool for my mates, loved the album 'the man who sold the world'

the width of a circle was immense

Omggg 17 was the crappiest age for me...got lost in clubs, boys and alcohol after my parents split and grandma died.

I listened to stupid crap....kesha- tic toc..usher- make love in the club, and my all time favorite- bedrock...hahahahha I was a hot mess....and live in a "mini detroit"...getting more and more ghetto which influenced the music I listened to..but then I was like what the hell am I doing ?

I'm all about the country life now. Nothing but Jason Aldean, Blake Shelton, Luke Bryan, Willie Nelson, George Strait...this is my heart and soul I would be miserable without country music.

  • Hallucinostic

^I see different kinds of way back songs here(some not so way back) lol, and ooh country, thats cool Willie Nelson, I listen to a bit of folk myself... anyways, 17 hmmm, thats more like the rage age for me so, theres Countdown To Extinction, Cowboys From Hell, Return To The Apocalyptic City, those kinda stuff(still like 'em)...... and oh yeah, Rubber Soul. :)

This is cool, memories and what not. :)

Sibby...I..., I'm going to forget you ever posted in this thread so I can go on stalking with.

    Larry and Darren, respect.

When I was 17 I was a huge Radiohead fan, specifically the album "The Bends". I "thought" it was the album of my generation, the voice of the uk youth. Nirvana was amazing, but they were American and quite alien to me in a cultural reference kinda way.

This song, "my iron lung" was and still is my favourite off the cd.

Hey... being a teenager ain't what it used to be. I was 17 in 2005, for crying out loud. You try finding good music in suburban Minnesota in the early 2000's without full internet access. Just be happy I haven't started talking about the Backstreet Boys yet. ...Whoops.

(...Holy Jebus, when did I get so old?)

When I was 17 back in 72 Don Mclean captured over a decade of rock with relatively complex deep lyrics in "American Pie"

^Ive read something about the "Backstreet Boys" up there(by sibyllene), well, I dont know, compared to the newer "music", some of the overhyped songs with less or no musicality and some with lyrics which a 5 year old could do better. I think Id take the Backstreet Boys anytime. (Im not giving some examples here cause baby baby oh theyll hate me if I do). ;)

Kevin, I discovered the bends a little later and I was obsessed with it,

I still class it as the 2nd best album I have ever heard, number 1 is 'ok computer' by the same band. Now that album is immense.

'Paranoid android' still gets me going today

When I was 17, I used to listen to the birds chirping outside my window at 6 am...
To the dogs barking at 3 am...
and to me saying: please let me sleep.

aside from that... I think I used to listen to the radio and to Selena, she has some songs in Spanish but also in English.

Ricardo Arjona, Christina Aguilera, Maroon 5, and I don't remember what else.

Blink 182 were ideal for the ears of 17yr olds. I also listened to Green Day, U2, Guns and Roses, that I can remember off the top of my head.. I want to find my old ipod now and have a gander at what is on it

  • Larry Chamberlin

    Colm,
then you must also have listened to System of a Down, Mettalica (at their nadir), Van Halen & Bon Jovi

    Third Eye Blind?
    REM?

  • Jordan

    17. I was listening to...

System of a Down (thanks for the reminder, Larry!)
    Deftones
    Slipknot
    Opeth
    In Flames
    Children of Bodom
    Nine Inch Nails

I think that was the majority of it.

    ^^
System of a Down not so much, Metallica a little but not a huge fan. Van Halen, Bon Jovi, REM, I did listen quite a lot. Sum 41, Good Charlotte, Bryan Adams, Foo Fighters are others I just remembered I listened to. I listened to some dance too, and an assortment of Now! albums I amassed from presents. Although I did have a quite a few different, random songs from different genres at that time. Still do I guess

    Kevin,
You're almost the same age as my son. Is Edinburgh that completely out of the mainstream of culture?

By the way, my wife & I heard an outstanding pub band in Stirling.
They played REM among other stuff.

  • abracadabra

Kevin is clearly too cool to listen to mainstream. He's probably the kinda guy who listens to musicians who define their genres by what their genres are but aren't... anti-folk, anti-jazz, anti-hiphop, etc.

Or he was just pulling your leg.
