May everyone all over the world enjoy a day of thanks, and to those in the States, Happy Thanksgiving.

As my sister just pointed out to me, in the illustrious words of Homer Simpson:

"It was the best Thanksgiving ever. I mean, emotionally, it was terrible, but the turkey was sooo moist!"

^ Haha, never heard that one before, but of course it's the Simpsons :)

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!!! Have a great day and safe weekend!

Darren - The version that we're taught about in primary school is this: When the Pilgrims came to America, they faced their first very harsh winter, and hadn't had much luck making crops grow. They faced likely starvation and death. Fortunately, the Native Americans in the area intervened and taught them how to grow hardy crops/shared their food, so that they could make it through the winter. This is supposed to be in memory of that aid, for which people give "thanks."

I'm not sure how much of that is accurate. I think people actually didn't celebrate Thanksgiving as we do until the 1800's or something. Nowadays, I think people use it as a day to reflect on what they have, give thanks, be with family, and eat good food.

Edit: Oh, and Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Happy Thanksgiving all! I'm almost done with basic training, and all the divisions in my training group got to leave base for Thanksgiving, I'm at a local VFW and they're letting us use internet and phones. So it's a pretty good day.

I miss you all on PnQ, but I'm set to graduate soon, and I'll be back!

    Hoo-yah! GO NAVY!

    I love my ignorance sometimes,

    however

    were the pilgrims english?
I hear a lot said about turkey for thanksgiving,
But if it is about eating well shouldn't it be steak?

Darren: Yes. The pilgrims were a religious group from the midlands of England, that separated from the Church of England & fled to Holland. They then established a colony in North America at present day Plymouth, Mass. Much romance about them fills the American literature.

Actually, the 1621 "First Thanksgiving" did include turkey, which was a flourishing species in the area. The turkey is the largest game bird in North America and was even nominated as the National Symbol by Benjamin Franklin. (He lost - the Bald Eagle was selected instead.)

Steaks are dropped on the grill at the clink of glasses, in other words, for no particular reason at all. To roast a whole turkey (10 - 20 lbs) needs a feast, since you'll have lots of leftovers.

This year it's just Jessica & Lauren (my daughters) & me as Rosaura is out of town, so my menu is simple. I cooked a turkey with cornbread stuffing, black & tan bread stuffing, giblet gravy, mashed potatoes, carrots, candied yams, and mushrooms simmered in a chicken broth & wine sauce. Also opened cans of corn, peas & cranberry sauce.

What we learned from Thanksgiving is it is always a good idea to have a meal with someone before you invade their space .
