Ravi Shankar: End of a golden musical era:

Some of you from India and those with interest in classical Indian music may recognize the magical music of Ravi Shankar. I just became aware of his passing away, he died last Tuesday at the age of 92. I was just a little kid in the audience when I first heard him.....the Sitar playing maestro's fingers mesmerized me. They spoke to my heart.... soft and divine.

He was the last of the great Masters of Sitar of the era past. In this rare video.. ..he is playing with 2 other maestro's Yehudi Menuhin (violin) and Ustad Allah Rakha Khan (tabla)...both deceased.

Here he is playing with his daughter who herself is an accomplished sitar maestro, recently was quite a hit at the oz festival in Australia.

I haven't heard this sad new LS...I do recall The Beatles were influenced by him at some point...George Harrison in particular if I remember right?

I know Norah Jones is his daughter but...never seen her play the sitar so..perhaps you mean another daughter?

You'll find old Ravi liked to spread his seed around, Hellon. That's right. I said spread his seeeeeed.

Also, he was 92, great innings, great legacy. He composed the music to my favourite movie, Panther Panchali, when he was kicking off his career. So beautiful.

^His seeeed....ahhh, gave birth to the most talented kind....produced in one of the top musicians factory....germinayted with extreme nourishing care..... that many would envy! I have no objection to that. I could wish he left a hundred "Ravi...seedlings" around. He was at least sincere to the woman he stayed with...until he/they broke up.

Yes Hellon, Anoushka (daughter from his last marriage to Sukanya Rajan) is the one who plays the Sitar like her dad. She is 2 years younger to Norah Jones (daughter through his affair with Sue Jones). He has been married twice 24 yrs each, but Sue Jones was a brief affair after his second break up. He spent his last 30 or more years in San Diego, before he died.....I came to know about him when I lived and worked at UC San Diego for a few years.

Here is Anoushka playing in a 2003 concert to honor George:

Though I was too young to know about his influence on Beatles, I did look it up and it seems George Harrison and he met up in 1969 in Rishikesh, India, and George seemed to have taken up some Sitar lessons....that was amusing...West meets East...I saw some video footage of it. Then they met up again in 1971 for a concert in Bangladesh. George has a lovely unpublished song titled after Dehradun (a beautiful hill station close to Rishikesh) when he visited India.

George played sitar on the song Norwegian Wood...I know that for sure....don't know of any others or if John or Paul dabbled with it.
