The 7 Day Contest: Day 4

  • Colm

First off, I'm posting this early to give a little extra time for everybody. Deadline for day 3 is 18.00 PnQ time, Thursday, so don't panic if you are reading this before then.

Secondly, there are a few things that need doing over the next 30 hours or so, besides writing poems, so make sure and read the full post. Friday (Day 5) will see an easier challenge to give a little breather before the finish line appears in the distance on into the weekend!

The concept for for the Day 4 challenge is an old favourite of PnQ contests: Picture prompts!

    Rules/Guidelines:

    - Either 5 or 6 poems to be submitted, based on/inspired by two collections of photographs (see below). 20 points for the top 5 poems. If you chose to write 6, the poem with least points will not be counted. 20pts per poem, 100 for the round.

    - Photo Group A: Historical and/or famous photographs. These depict some famous/infamous scenes from the past.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PSPsBzJ5M2g

    - Photo group B: A collection from National Geographic, these photos are more centered on the natural environment and landscapes.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fDBhhHgtFy0

    - These are video links but just slideshows of photographs. There's lots to chose from, I don't have the time to give individual links to them all so this is the handiest way! Look up the description in Video 1 to find the titles of the photographs.

    - Must submit at least one poem from each video. I.e, your club can submit 3 from each, or just 1 from video B and 5 and from video B and vice versa.

    - Line limit of 32 lines.

    - At least 2 participants from each club, but the more the merrier.

    - Submit by pm as usual by 1800pm PnQ time, Friday 8th. Pm me the name of the author and what photograph it is inspired by (number below and name if applicable)

    Tips/guidelines:

    - Don't be afraid to do some research on your picture. While I nor the judges want a simple rehash of the picture itself, finding out the background, context, etc. might help set the scene, get into the minds of seen or unseen characters, etc. Poems not related to their picture will not be well received.

    - In reading the poems, judges should be able to know by the end, without being told, what photograph or at least what type of photograph, the poem is inspired by.

    - As always, try to be creative and original. Poems can be any genre, any format.

    -----

But wait. If you thought you just had to write a poem or 2, that's not all. (muahahaha!)

Ok evil laugh out of my system. I need your help with information about the weekend challenges.

    - For Saturday's challenge (Day 6), I want each club to play host and come up with one challenge that will be randomly assigned to another club.

Your challenge can be pretty much anything. More formed poetry, music-based challenges, incorporating quotes, etc. You can make your own restrictions and rules.

    The only rules are thus:

    - No more or less than 4 poems will have to be submitted. Each poem will be worth 25pts before bonus calculations are added (see below)

    - You have to accept the challenge you are given.

At this stage I can imagine members scheming to challenge others to write a 193 line villanelle/haiku chain/rap mash up about life inside a tennis ball. Well, before you do invent such a dastardly ploy, know that I will assess the difficulty of each challenge and, similar to Olympic diving or gymnastics for example, give extra points for completion of harder challenges. (most likely by multiplying scores by decimals of 1.1 upwards). If challenges are deemed too difficult, they will be replaced with a spare one I have: for the sake of fairness all challenges should at least be doable! :)

Note: It is possible, if unlikely, for a club to end up with their own challenge!

Also, there is a bonus 10points for the club that comes up with the best challenge, so get thinking!

    - Challenges should be sent to me on or before the deadline: 1700pm PnQ time, Friday 8th. (One hour before deadline for day 4 poems). 15 point penalty for any club that doesn't submit a challenge in time.

    ------

    Nearly done now I swear.

Sunday's challenge (Day 7) will be a throwback to the Golden Era that was Abby's Marathon contest! Each club will have one hour to submit as many poems as possible based on word prompts (given approx 30mins before the start of each hour) I'm thinking provisionally that scoring will be 50pts for volume of poems (1 point for each poem) and the remaining 50pts for overall average quality of the poems.

What I want to know is, what times will best suit each club. I know with timezones, life commitments etc. people mightn't be available all at one time so I'm giving clubs some notice to pick one of three times that will suit them best to do their challenge.

    Option 1: Sunday 10th, 7.00-8.00am PnQ time
    Option 2: Sunday 10th, 15.00-16.00pm PnQ time
    Option 3: Monday 11th, 14.30-15.30pm PnQ time

Please get back to me with preferred times if/when you can.

    ------

I'm looking at the possiblity of individual, optional/bonus mini-challenges for over the weekend, watch this space for updates.

SO, three things on each clubs checklist to do:

    1) Write 5-6 poems for Day 4 challenge. [Deadline 18.00pm PnQ time, Friday]
    2) Make a challenge for another club for Day 6. [Deadline 17.00pm PnQ time, Friday]
    3) Think about times that might suit for Day 7 challenge.

Bet of luck, keep it up (remember Day 5 will be a bit easier!)

Question dear Colm- I want to make sure I understand all of this... You want 5-6 poems in regards to the photos... and then you want our club idea for a challenge all by tomorrow? is that all we need for now? Im so confused ha ha

  • Colm

Andrea, simple answer to your question is yes.

I want the club idea for a challenge by the mentioned deadline so I can assign difficulty levels to them if needed, draw out who gets what challenge and have them ready to give out to each club on time. The deadline for the club-invented challenge ideas may be extended: Day 6 is the club-invented challenges day so Day 5 (tomorrow) is before it. But if I get all the challenge ideas in I can start the Day 6 earlier to give more time for it, as the Day 5 challenge is easier.

I hope that makes sense and doesn't confuse you more, lol.

    I might be either

    a) having a thicket/blonde moment
    or
    b) wanting everything on a plate

but I have picked a picture from video group B and can I find the title of it?

    No!!

I have even looked at the photographers website and it is not on there and the nat geo website

    aaarrrrgggghhhhh

Darren that's my fault. I meant to add names and numbers to that second video (that was what the second post was reserved for editing). Ill get to it when I can

Edit: Actually I don't have the time to go through it now, lol. So it doesn't matter too much, just put a little description and the time its on the video at, e.g. '4mins 15secs, sunset.'
