Does anyone know just how quickly they can become contaminated...I have tried to research this myself but...not being scientifically minded the answers just have me at a loss....I really need some answers ASAP...one of my grandson's is sick...

*Edit...I mean..if they are left in a car overnight?

Hi Hellon. I remember years back when I was in elementary, plastic bottle contamination became huge news in my country. My mom would throw away plastic bottles after three uses but when the news broke out about the climbing percentage of the population getting sick, she bought us water bottles. As for leaving it in the car overnight, I guess it depends where you're from. In my case, we throw away the water (including the plastic bottle) especially when we see bubbles forming because it's too humid here... Just speaking from my own personal experience. :) I hope he gets well soon!

The sun heats plastic into the water which releases toxic chemicals which are unsafe to drink. Just heard on the news its been a cause of breast cancer.

same goes for microwavable dinners. They suggest taking them out of the plastic container and putting it on to a plate to heat it up.

What's in the bottle plays a part too. Apple juice is not good, can be contaminated when it is bottled if not pasteurized.

Thanks for the feedback so far guys...very much appreciated. My grandson is very sick at the moment...he's been admitted to hospital in fact because he cannot hold down water...vomiting constantly although no diarrhea so gastro has been ruled out. He was over here on Saturday and his dad had put some fresh coke in an emply plastic water bottle that had been in the car overnight. It is our winter here right now but the highest temp still gets to around 19oC....just trying to rule out/examine possible causes right now...his temp is also very high. I've just come back from the hospital where they have him on a drip and feeding him antibiotics so....hoping for an improvement tomorrow...thanks again peps...

Hellon I'm so sorry to hear that! Will keep him in my prayers, kids are resilient!

I'm kind of creeped out about the plastic thing now. :/

Thanks to everyone who responded here and to George for pming me with some really great information on these bottles. Thankfully my little grandson is on the mend and was discharged from hospital at lunchtime today. His blood tests showed that he had some sort of bacterial infection but they couldn't identify what it was exactly. He was hooked up to a drip and fed some antibiotics overnight...that seemed to do the trick. Very scary and the time mind you! Thanks again guys.

Same here....Hellon, that's wonderful he's on his way to recovery.

I've definitely heard the same about plastic containers, and my mom always says don't drink water in a plastic bottle that's been left a day or more in the heat!

Thank you all for your support and kind words. I've just been out to lunch with him and my daughter and he's back to his normal self thankfully. Still on the antibiotics but his appetite has come back and all his bottles...I'm talking baby bottles here, think the brand is avante? have now been binned. He only had a night bottle and it was never in the microwave but...these bottles where washed in a dishwasher which could have the same effect I believe...bacteria building up on the inside over several months. Young mums..please take note!
