Yes for our solders who went to invade third word countries for us, for our riches to become richer. Lets morn for our solders who went to slaughter those who could not defend themselves. Let built this monument on the blood of innocents.

While the opinion as to whether veterans bring safety depends on your geography, I am still grateful men and women put their lives on the line to protect the families they hold sacred.

On the other hand, I still dream of a time where resolution comes by negotiation rather than force.

As much as I honor those willing to make the ultimate sacrifice, I yearn for their obsolescence.

How true that is Larry... I hold great respect and want to thank every veteran and anyone currently serving. So many families have been protected and given hope, though I hope for a future where there will be other effective ways of negotiating (etc) and sacrifices won't have to be so frequent. Can't even begin to fathom the true honor a solider has for his country.... to give his life for others is a huge act of humility and love.

The last time I saw my Dad was when he left for Vietnam. Military life for him was simply a job with benefits. He and Mom had nine children. There was a time when, for many young men raising families, this was an excellent choice vis-a-vis the benefits. Not every soldier is a hero or patriot. Not every soldier supports the policies which bind him to armed conflict. I admire all for stating your positions honestly. I also respect the soul and spirit of a steadfast, brave man who is consistent in his convictions.

    That is true Dayzed

Dear potp I know how hard it is for you living in US. to understand what I am trying to say here. We should be able to see that the same reason applies to a Hezbollah justifying the killing of 3000 innocent people in September 11, it is the same as how we justify bombing of all the cities and villages of Iraq and... under false pretenses. And that is our leaders, our governments brainwash us for their ambitions. Unites stat was never in any danger invading all those countries.
Even though I praise the bravery of some of those who had lost their lives in the illusion of protecting their families, but history would judge upon them differently; at least noting in compare with those who fought against Hitler and in all those great wars. We have to remember people of the other side, that our armies armed to the teeth with the most cutting edge weapons known to human race, slaughter are human too and have remembrance days also. We have to bring our humanism out of the confine of our narrow nationalism, to include all the members of human race. It is after all "humanism" we're talking about not our own separatism (country_ race _ religion. ) Specially as poets, our soul should be more spacious than this.

Please, please, pleaaaase don't let another tribute thread turn into fighting, or a PnQ religion war. Please.

    My prayers, always.

I wasn't giving specific examples, just saying in general thanks to all those who have served. That is a big task to take on and I truly feel they are called to do so. I may not agree with every attack, invading of other countries, but then again, I'm just an observer. I don't know every branch of the military or what everything entails. Also used to think being a soldier meant you were on the frontlines of a war but it doesn't. There are so many elements that can aid others.

This should be a thread of remembrance, not going into debate. Agree with Britt, hope we can keep this respectful (since we are from varying parts of the world) and full of thoughts and prayers!

Some people have it in their nature to only see the bad and point it out until they get everyone else to only see the bad as well.

    Shame, really.

    Okay guys only few pointers
Your fear of debates has turn this site to a dead place.
We are living being, we discuss, we disagree and we learn from one another. And mods are there to stop those who can not work in confine of democracy.
But democracy does not mean to shut up.

Blissful I buy that shame two times everyday with all my heart because if I am not able to see the other side of the elements, (as Descartes said : "I doubt therefore I am") I cease to exist. like the rest of us. Then I be only a clockwork toy that has nothing to say but some cliche words that someone taped in to his/her head.

I think of the American cemetery in Normandy when Rememberance Day is mentioned. Thoughts to those who gave their lives for what they believed in.

I have never feared the death
even though its eyes seemed more fearsome
than the eyes of corruption and deceit
But my fear, however, was for dying in the land
    that the wages of gravediggers
excel the price of the man's freedom.

happy remembrance day of those who died for a righteous cause!!

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
    In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
    In Flanders fields."

I like to believe this memorial day is to remember the Soldiers and the Civilians who have died in the wars...
No politics, religions no bs, just to honor the dead...

  • ddavidd

First the remembrance day is for solders not civilian.
but if is so, so I contribute it to those civilians who died under our government's bombing, in the same logic, if human life values equally. Or you just mean American. In that case your logic defeats itself by its own, it doesn't even need others.

"No politics, religions no bs, just to honor the dead..."
If we just blindly honor dead so according to your reason, the death of Ted Bondy is honored also!!
but according to "goodness of commonsense" we honor only those who died in a righteous cause.
For sure we do not honor those who got captured pissing or defecating on the Iraqi prisoner by the very American good Samaritans cameras' also.

Remembrance Day actually commemorates the end of hostilities on 11th November 1918...ending WWI...meaning peace was once again restored...please don't forget that this is how this day is meant to be observed.... Observing Peace. Poppies all around...

I love poppies. when I was child once in the middle of a travel my father stopped at the sight of the most amazing poppy field. The ground was unstoppably red like never before, to the end of horizon, pouring to the skies. It was an evening and my father allowed us to run and play in the field until dusk. And then in the night break I could not believe my own eyes. I have never seen in all my life, except that night, the sky that much full of stars . So many stars that literally you could not see the dark. It was then that I truly saw THE "FLAG" and understood the true meaning of the "LAND OF FREEDOM". And I fell in love with THE "TRUE" America.

Well...good for you..thank you for sharing...we all think our sky is special and holds so many amazing things...what we don't remember is we share it with the rest of the world

  • ddavidd

I do share. that is the reason I am always in trouble: sharing my sky with the creatures of the sand. They hate me for that. Only a handful of people in this site appreciate my works. The rest just keep calling me names. They think I am insane, not knowing that noting is more insane that their own sanity, the confine of matrix.

    dear Britt
coming to think of it, this is the second memorial thread that I somehow turned to argument. But the fist one was not my fault and I was attacked for the thing I would never do. but in this one I take responsibility and even though I think arguments and discussions are healthy, I give you my word that I would never post my objection like this in any memorial day as long as I am here. Only out of respect.

Yes, I'm greatful for my Dad who fought the Nazis from his battleship out there in the open seas, to help protect us all from those who seek the end of democracy and freedom.
I'm afraid that there will always be wars, loss of life, Dictators wanting to inflict their religion, there thoughts as to how we should be, by force of numbers and killing.
War and suffering has been with the human race since time began and will continue to be with us until the end of the world.
Those who dream of a world without war are simply dreamers. The genetic make up of human beings unfortunately does not make that dream possible.
Our best defence always is therefore to maintain a strong defence, and applaud those that are prepared to defend our freedoms whilst we sleep soundly in our beds.
I salute all those who defended our freedoms in the last war, and whom serve now still keeping the enemies of democracy at bay. They are brave people who deserve our continuing respect and praise.
