TRIBE 1:
#1 Inner Depth
When I was young, being watched from pale
shorelines of New Zealand, I never believed
I held significance.
Every sea creature paddled, floated, and waded
past my body even though my shape was
supposedly called distinctive-
79,000 pounds without the will to live.
However, that summer, as I began to hunt on
krill and schooling fish, I met my first friend.
Her name was Lucille, and she quickly
became my pen pal through miles of ocean.
She once echoed to me that she could almost
touch sunlight whenever she leaped into sky...
I envied her courage for she seemed to give
birth to joyful sounds and happiness
often lost in subtropical waters.
Lucille would leave my side after each dusk,
knowing words could not soothe my loneliness-
but when the moon's reflection sparkled and
caught my eye, I began to listen to her nightide
song. Each note spoke names of creatures
she had met, remembered, and loved.
It lasted twenty minutes and I could not help
but repeat it. I felt a draw to her and instinctively
knew the way her pitch jumped then faltered.
I haven't stopped singing since...
I am the humpback whale, creating sound,
teaching others the song of my ancestors
as I slowly evolve- for I have realized to
have power my voice must be awakened.

# 2 The Much Fabled Tale of Snow White
Snow White dreamt a curious dream
of foxes and a queen,
and when she woke, she asked the dwarves
just what her dream could mean.
Sneezy sneezed and Sleepy yawned
Grumpy scoffed and frowned,
Doc began to clear his throat
to say something profound:
"Dreams are simply dreams, my dear,
I've been to many schools-
analysing dreams is nothing
but the work of fools."
Dopey's face was tight with fear,
foxes meant bad news -
woman's magic, camouflage
designed to cause a ruse.
He tried to warn his sweet Snow White
who laughed and turned away,
"You're so silly, Dopey dear",
was all she had to say.
That afternoon, when cleaning house,
she answered the front door,
not long before the stupid twit
was passed out on the floor.
Therefore, boys and girls be sure
to listen to the masses,
a dwarf may not be wisest just because
he wears thick glasses.

#3 Racing Stripes
The day of the race finally approached,
as the jockeys mounted their rides;
adrenaline plummeted high.
Seven contestants fled from the
starting gate with flashing speed,
finding freedom beneath their racing hoofs.
Unexpected laughter drowned out
any commentating, as it echoed loudly
through the spectating crowd.
For before their eyes, ran six
bay horses, and a zebra that
that was lagging behind.
Judgement loomed in the minds
of obstinate people, as they
deemed this zebra to be a joke.
But this faithful zebra ignored
the comments of non-believers
as he only knew what he had been taught -
to run and never look back.
The rider of the zebra began to
regret his choice; his choice
of taking a chance on something
that only he believed in.
Quickly leaping from the customised saddle,
he abandoned the zebra, landing harshly
on the track, with an injury of broken pride.
This jockey watched on as the race
progressed, and his ride continued
to flee from his sight towards the
horses in the distance.
The zebra found speed through determination
which bellowed through his strong body
and galloped through his loyal feet,
and soon he caught up with the others.
The audience gasped in disbelief as
the black and white stripes merged into
a blur, and crossed that finish line.
The zebra stood tall and proud
as he always knew he would be the winner -
no matter who won the race.
And his rider stayed silent
with a fake smile spread across his face,
but painful tears inside his heart,
for he knew better than to follow strangers in a crowd,
and doubt what he had always believed in.

#4 Crying Wolf
I had tried ignore all that
they had said to me.
I kept going back to them.
I kept trying to forget that
it was all for nothing,
that they were only
playing tricks on me.
They kept calling to me,
telling me that something
was going wrong,
They were always calling
after me, shouting out
that they "needed" my help.
But they never needed me,
they thought it was a great joke.
I ran out of tolerance for it,
I couldn't bare it anymore,
So, I ended it there.
I would not take anymore of this.
I left and never turned back.
But they must remember,
I only left them because
they cried wolf.
TRIBE 2
#1 Untitled
There must have been seaweed-coated
rock under the blanket of sea-lions, who huddled
just out of harms way of the crashing waves.
The browner youngsters sniffed the ocean
and dreamed of the surf.
A occasional protruding fin betrayed
the intentions of great whites, hungry, waiting.
The sea-lions edged closer to the edge
wetting their fins until one jumped, high and majestic
and disappeared under the water
for the first time. He skimmed the surface as if
adreneline propelled him forward until
he turned red and multiplied in the teeth
of a great white.
In a wave, in tribute or as if
the key to their prison opened,
the colony empty themselves of land
and darted into the expanse of ocean
like raindrops. The dreams of one
young seal lost at sea.

#2 Hippo-hippo-hypocrite
Semi-submerged - he told the river
to stop its roars. Crocodiles, flies and more,
might have merged from its waters,
but its body remained an assemblage
of reflections. Semi-submerged - he told
the river, to stop its pretence.
Then the river spat him out, yawned
at the elepenthine mass, the river horse,
whatever he called himself. Told him
to stop its speeches, told him
to leave its assemblage.

#3 Why the Land Is Dead
Back when animals first came
forth into this shining world
man had not yet come,
and no one had told them what
each of them should eat -
grass or trees or each other.
Coyote went around
and called a meeting
to discuss it before all
died of hunger. He said,
"if your teeth are sharp
you must shred meat."
Bear and Bobcat looked
at Rabbit and Boar
and their mouths watered.
Coyote continued:
"If your teeth are flat
you should grind plants."
Boar and Rabbit stepped aside
and after talking came back.
Boar came close to Bear
and in his face told them all,
"this is truth, like or not,
but only on these conditions."
Then Rabbit spoke out, timid,
but in a voice all could hear,
"you may kill us, but only
if you hunt us, for we will
fight to live. Also, you must
eat us if you choose to kill us."
And so it was that the animals
sorted out the right way to live
and the right way to die:
those hunted who were hungry;
those caught were eaten;
the rest survived to bear young.
Then man came who killed for fun,
wasted many carcasses rotting,
left not enough to have children
and whole areas were emptied
of all living creatures
and the forest died.

#4 Priorities
Who will respect you if you don't respect yourself? And who will love you if you have yet to learn how to love yourself from within?
Perhaps, it's time to focus on your inner self and consider making (you) a priority, instead
of bending over backwards for those that will still form a silent derogatory opinion-
and it doesn't matter how others view you, provided you respect yourself, for the way people perceive you is never the true you-stop worrying about your reputation and focus instead on your character, for one is what people think you are, and one is what you really are
*Skunk-sensuality, respect, self-esteem, reputation*
