V-Day <3

Valentine's Day is right around the corner, and in trying to figure out what to do with my significant other, I'm curious what you're doing :)

Are you celebrating this year? With a partner, friend(s), family? Do you have plans? Do you have a ton of ideas and can't choose one? Do you have no idea what the hell to do and need suggestions? Do you hate Valentine's because it's a stupid Hallmark holiday meant to make people spend their money and/or make single people feel left out?

I've probably attended more anti-V-day celebrations than is healthy, but this year I want to plan something romantic with my boyfriend. We failed miserably last year. This year is going to be different! It's going to be SPECIAL!

Since Valentine's is on a Friday (Saturday in Australia?), the possibilities are wide open.

Here are some of my ideas. Be warned- they're generic.

    -Ice skating
    -Wine tasting
    -Weekend getaway to a cabin/B&B
-Book a hotel for the night & trash the place (okay, maybe not "trash" it, but come on)
-Take a trip to the zoo (not great for animal lovers like myself)
-Curl up and watch movies all day & order delivery
-Volunteer together at a soup kitchen
-Go horseback riding & pack lunch
    -Picnic at a park
-Fancy dinner & a movie (excuse to get dolled up!)
    -Visit a museum
-Take a day trip to several breweries
-Rose petals, tea lights & a bubble bath
-Scavenger hunt with clues leading to a gift
-Cook a homemade dinner & dessert together

BONUS: Tell me your gift ideas! So far I've made Kevin a romantic coupon book.

I never liked Valentine's day, but my boyfriend will be here next week and we'll spend it this year with each other. We probably won't go out but I'm sure I'll be happy enough just because we're finally togetherrrr. I painted him. A silly gift, I know, but I honestly can't afford anything... blah. I'm boring.

I really like your ideas, Jane. Bubble bath... <3 SIGH.

My Husband and I celebrate it in our own unique and quirky way.. Every year I write him a silly love poem and he hides cards, stars and glitter on my side of our bedroom. We exchange small gifts as well... and top off the night with playing our favorite video game together.

The gift I am giving Jim this year is a pack of playing cards. On the outside I am writing 52 reasons why I love you, then on each card in the deck will be a reason why I love him.. A picture of us will be on the outside of the box :-) I got this idea on a crafty, thrifty page I found on facebook.

Larry! I jokingly mentioned to Kevin taking a hot air balloon ride. Wish we could afford it. Sounds like you lovebirds are in for a treat, and hey, maybe we'll run into you in Napa.

Noura, if only I could paint. Homemade gifts are so touching. If you two haven't seen each other in awhile, a relaxing night at home sounds perfect :)

Andrea, that's adorable! Like I wrote to Noura, homemade gifts are the best. Your husband is a lucky man.

I've created a new holiday in replace of Valentine's Day. Man day. We do whatever Jason wants, and I make a steak and potato meal.

I don't like how Vday turned into high expectations. Instead, we usually go shooting or go for a drive up river (Jason always picks this, and I love doing that stuff..so it just works for us. I get him a very small, meaningful gift (I found an awesome coffee mug this year. Hes a big coffee drinker.

A lot of my friends don't understand why I prefer this. Its full of expectations of expensive gifts, chocolate yadda yadda. Its really supposed to be about celebrating your relationship together. I choose not to do that with items but memories, and weve made special ones. This year were headed up the mountain to go snow wheeling :)

Jane I love the idea of volunteering together. It really creates a unique bond :)

Valentine's Day will be celebrated on 14th...which is also a Friday here in Australia..it's just that we will start in earlier over here and it will be into Saturday when our other members will still be celebrating on Friday...time differences can be very confusing I know.

I will be over in Korea where things are a little different...14th Feb is when the females buy gifts/send cards etc for their male squeeze/someone they fancy and so on. 14th March...which they call white day is when the male returns the favour...if he's interested!!!! The girls have to wonder for a whole month...cruel eh LOL!!!!

    That's my suggestion for you

The goober in me has always secretly kind of liked Valentine's day. Ha! I feel like I associate it more with friends and candy and cheap little cards than I do with roses and jewelry and Romance with a capital R. That said, I feel like a little candy and fun is exactly what I need at this point in the winter. I'M SO TIRED OF FEBRUARY ALREADY. Need things to look forward to!

The Fellow and I usually make food together - cupcakes or cakes or whatever. It's fun, tasty, and low-key.

This year, I THOUGHT he was going to be visiting me the weekend of V-day, but he's actually coming out this weekend! Don't know how we got our lines crossed, there! But I'm excited to see him earlier than expected, and maybe we'll even be able to go out on the town without being crowded out by young lovers.

But my gift plan is to try to recreate his all-time favorite cheeseburger (and mine, while I'm at it. Girl's gotta eat.)

For actual Valentine's day, then, I will probably hang out with my lady pals from school. "Gal"entine's day.

Though I love all the points y'all have made. I don't believe in Valentines day. Yes I am single but I don't need a day to show the one I love how much I care. It should be everyday no?

My guy and I take turns planning Valentine's Day each year, that way one of us don't get burnt out of always doing the planning. It's my turn this year. I always try to plan stuff that he has mentioned he wants to do but don't always get the opportunity at the time due to work. This summer, he didn't get to go fishing one time and he got really bummed over it because it's something he goes to do to relax. So, this year I rented us a cabin right beside the river and bought him some new fishing gear. Of course, I had to throw in some corny fishing themed candy like gummy worms in a package that says "You're the perfect catch for me!" lol. Along with a few other of his favorite candies and whatnot's he will enjoy.

I don't think of Valentine's Day as the only day that I can show how much I care, I try to do that everyday with small, simple things that I know will make him smile. But for us, Valentine's Day is the day that we can do the 'bigger' stuff for each other. We think of it as a mini-vacation to get away from all the stress of life and just focus on each other.

    Huh? Valentines Day?

Feb 14th, Nikko will be playing a gig at the HiFi Bar in front of screaming young hipsters.

I'll be at home with my usual routine of drinking wine till he comes home, failing at staying awake, snoring on the couch while some documentary plays on my laptop, rudely waking up when he thumps in late with his gear, having a brief argument, going to bed and passing out.

The next day we'll nurse each other's hangovers and perhaps say "Oh yeah, did you know Valentine's Day was yesterday? I DIDN'T THINK SO." Then he'll bring me a hot chocolate in bed and we'll have sex.

I'm willing to bet that's what happens. I'm a bit ambitious about the sex part, but everything else is pretty much guaranteed.

Haha why not give a section to adult talk in the "non poetical talk" forum and name it hmm let me see ...... okay : valentine night updates, or under Abby's red skirt, winding and mating. or simply: "R18+" , for God forbid un-adult members might realize too soon that valentine is not about love, or heart shape chocolates.
And it is a good idea, later we could make collection booklet from it and sell it in "Barns & Unrefined" bubbly gummy section. I would buy it too :) :)

I have yet to respond to anyone else, and I plan to, but for now, here's an update: Kevin and I are going to Santa Rosa for wine tasting then heading back to his place for a romantic night.
We had a hotel booked, but it was going to be pricey... Figure his place will work just as well since his housemate will be out of town. Tea lights, rose petals, incense, wine, the whole thing. A proper cliche V-day.

Your ideas are all so cute! Hope you all have a great day :)

Personally I don't want to celebrate Valentine's day... my boyfriend's birthday is the day after so I like doing a lot for him for his birthday. I'm taking him out for a meal and I shall wear a dress... Something he's only seen me do once before in 2 years 4 months. Only this time I will be wearing HEELS as well (wedges, so hopefully walking won't be too much of a problem). For V-day itself we'll probably just say "happy Valentines day" and that'll be all xD (to his disappointment... oops. NO that wasn't a dirty joke! xD).

Present-wise I am breaking out my inner DIY chick and trying to make him a box from scratch. I draw him pictures sometimes and he has nowhere to put them, so I thought and A4 sized box would be handy :). I've also got him a poster map of Middle Earth (which I am seriously jealous of).

We had a great time! Hope you all did too! Kev & my anniversary is coming up in less than 10 days, so some of these V-day ideas are getting recycled :P
Booked 2 nights at a hotel in Tahoe and plan to visit a couple breweries and fit in some snowboarding/sledding. Yay!
