Ash Wednesday

I'm not sure how many people know about this Christian holiday (or holy day) but thought I would share a reflection on it. I know on PnQ we all have different beliefs, ideologies, faiths which I completely respect.... I would simply like to share a bit of information on this, whether you find it interesting or meaningless. Ash Wednesday is not only observed by Catholics but by other denominations like Lutherans, Methodists, and Anglicans.

It marks the beginning of the 40-day season of Lent and is a day of fasting and abstinence. A cross of ashes is placed on a person's forehead, symbolizing our humanity, sins we have, repentance, and a way to prepare for Jesus' Resurrection at Easter. I'm personally Catholic and see it as something humbling and beautiful. At our church, we celebrate mass, and often sing hymns centered around around the beginning of Lent. It is a very peaceful atmosphere in order to reflect. There's a certain feeling of unity that we all can share in acknowledging our imperfections. It shows that we have shame but that we don't have to be alone in it, or let it dominate us. Often, I hear this line from Scripture (Genesis 3:19): "For you are dust and to dust you shall return."

Also, have had some misconceptions about it. I didn't know who else observed it or had services. Was reading that this tradition using ashes and palms occurred in the 12th century which is neat when looking at its history.

Here's an article with an overview:

Anyway, thanks for reading and have a good day!
