    1. Sense

There is little more to do now
    in this empty little house
    than to dust the shelves,
mop the tiles, and look back
to check that nothing is left behind
but the white squares on the wall
where our photos used to hang.

    2. Funny

There once was a man called Nick
Who was always a loathsome prick,
    He brought a large cake
    To prove he could bake
But people still thought him a dick.

    Deep in the forest,
    amidst the towering oaks,
    an acorn opens.

    4. City/State/Country

    In the heart of Australia,
the night is of purest black
    and white.

There is no sound but the single
rustle of a life hard-lived, making
    its way home.

The red dirt clings to each hair and pore
    and Australia sticks with you,
    long after you've left it.

    5. 30-35 syllables

Here are thirty dirty little syllables
that were thrust to my consciousness
with no thought of poetry whatsoever.

    6. Religion

    I used to see God
    in ten-armed warriors,
    elephant-headed angels, and
    monkeys with superhuman kindness.
They had skins the colour of storm clouds,
black matted hair, necklaces of skullbones,
and eyes centred on their foreheads.
They lifted mountains with their little finger,
sat on boars, lions and swans,
and held the universe in their
    tiny, butter-smeared mouths.

I still see God in all that is
    imagination, power,
    mystery and madness.

    7. Special occasion

    One line is all that
    makes the difference
    between what used to be
    and what will always be.

    One thin pink line that
    knows your heart is
    no longer the only one
    that beats in your body.

It stares at you, this line,
    barely visible, unmistakable.

    8. Wild

There is a wildness in us, still.
The other day, I saw a man
start laughing out of the blue.
It was on the train. He laughed
so hard he shook his head, his tears
ran down, and he had to leave
the carriage because the rest of us
    were worried about him.

Across rivers across seas across mountains
I brought change to the world

    10 Funny

There once was a lass named Abby
Long, lean with tits that were flabby
    She' hang around bars
    Go home in strange cars
Her behaviour was really quite shabby

    Bricks cracked bones broken
    Rubble and dirt
    My beloved Christchurch no more
The heart of Canterbury torn apart

New Zealand's garden city now a graveyard for flowers

    13 religion

I passed a row of crosses today
    On the Apian Way
I was so far from home
    So out of place
Yet half way down there was a space for me
The spot was marked with a plaque
    But I could not dwell
I have no cross to bear

    15.) (7; special occasion)

She had his ashes in film canisters.
    This one, for the boat,
    this one for the river.
She put one on the mantle,
    and another by her bed.
And one she kept in her purse, always on her,
As if she could run down to Rite-Aid,
    And have him developed.

    16.) (8; wild card)

I like trees with lots of leaves,
And dogs that sniff and bark at things
That cling beneath the branch's eaves.

    18.) (2; funny)

An old woman leans forward in her chair, trying to get up.

The gnarled ridges of her knees don't bend like they used to,
Her legs are old branches now,
Her back, a lumped hill, a crippling reminder
that the greener pastures of her youth are long gone.
Her hands clench against the armrests, roots
    frozen but grabbing.
With a puff, she pulls her neck forward,
an old crone of a trunk, weight tipping forward, forward,
    but not quite levitating until
she gives a toot from beneath,
    a gentle breeze propelling her
    onto her feet.

    20.) (4; must mention town/state)

Let's go back to the rocks again,
where the wind is thick and the foam is slick,
Where your toes get bruised by the smoothest stones
and the pines flex in the cooling sun.
Let's go back to the Boothbay shore,
To the summer hum and ocean roar,
To the lobster traps bobbing up and down,
To the island in the distance, the horizon's crown.

    21.) (5; 30-36 syllables)

    Ice is nice
    but lice are too,
if you find one with manners.

    And chips are sweet,
    But not so neat,
So let's smash them all with hammers.

  • Narph

    22.) (6; religion)

I don't believe in god, no god
    I don't think that he's there,
And if I did, I'll tell you what,
    I don't think that I'd care.

    23.) (7; special occasion)

    Sniffle,

    a birthday cake
    gone green
    with envy.

    24.Wild card

    She walks down the aisle
    Dressed in a gossamer gown,
    She looks straight ahead
    Almost afraid to cry,
Pale lips used to produce a radiant smile
Now as she walks down the aisle
Only a frown graces her mouth,
    As she reaches her destination
    Cries surround her looking around
    She says "goodbye"
As they bury her 6 ft underground....

  • Narph

    1.) (sensory)

Her eyes are deep brown lakes of love
    reflecting the bright orange ball,
    that she wants, wants,
    wants to chew on.

    3. Formed poem

    Loving Her

    Living in the shadows
    Obvious to the pain
    Vivid dreams lay dormant,
In her eyes only misery lives
    Numb inside and out
    Giving illusions of being "happy"

    Hushed cries
    End her plight
    Revealing a corpse bride

    4.Must mention a country/state/town

    O how I love Texas
    Hot as can be,
    Only a sinner like me
Would consider this state a dream!
    Saints would mope
As they complain to a pope
How only Satan would control those
In a wicked place like my home!

Even though I don't have you
Long were the nights we talked

I regret losing you dear friend

    1. Sense

    Eyes deceiving
    alluding curiosity
    When it hides destruction,
    Smiles are given freely
But the reason differ than you would think,

Caution a vixen can cost someone's life
So don't let the eyes deceive!

    4. Must mention a country/state/town

    In Damascus, near the markets,
    there is always a
homeless wandering in the streets, running
    after wealthy people hiding behind
    their car windows.
You can see him chewing his fingertips,
staring at clothes he will never buy,
at families he'll never be a part of,
at the sky as it swallows the sun, and
    he looks down.
    He's lonely and cold and
    dying soon.

    5. 30=36 syllables

There, we once had a fight.
    And there, behind this building,
he once stole a kiss off my cheeks
    and I blushed.
And that street vendor once sold us coffee
    and dreams.

    6 Religion.

I don't know who you are
    or what you are
or why you did all of this.
    I don't know if you're
    in
    or out,
    if you're up or down,
if you're in that endless darkness
    or that ray of light.

    Maybe you are the breeze
    that just passed me by.
    Maybe you're the smile
along the cheeks of that kid,
    marking his dimples.

    But I know
    I know you're somewhere
    in my poetry
    trying to reach me as
    I try to reach you.
