    7) 10 lines

    Johnny had to write
"I will not write crap poetry again"
    ten times
    in white chalk
    that squeaked its way
    across the blackboard
while the rest of his class
    chanted the count to ten,
    smirking at the waste
    of time and chalk.

    8. Simile/metaphor

You say she poured her heart out
and I imagine the lost babies,
    harsh words, birthdays, lovers,
victories and music come splashing out
    with sludge and blood from
the aorta into the bowl-like vessel
    of your head.

  • abracadabra

    1. Number and animal

I like to think that dinosaurs
were hot pinks and fluoro greens in colour,
their feathers waving like a Mardis Gras
as they hunted for the ancient
    mammals that would evolve into
the new, drab leaders of the world
    many million years later.

  • Nicko

    2) wildcard

    Bobby our mad pet dog
    Originally a working dog

    3) Life

    Life in Ashburton
    As kids it was great
    Family, cousins
    Everybody near
    One big happy community
As you grow everybody drifts away
    Lives separate lives
That's the way it is now
    Even for kids
    So much is missed
    This social experiment

  • Nicko

    6) Drugs

    Drambuie nectar of the gods
    It flows down the throat
    Smooth and viscous
but with a punch that can stop a mule
    To be savoured
    not guzzled and wasted

  • Nicko

    7) 10 - 13 lines

    The long and winding road
    Leads past my door
    Never stopping
    Forever onwards it trudges
    Mile after long mile
    10 miles wide
    More than 13 miles long
    And this is day two
How many days must we endure
    God not another five
    save me

  • Nicko

    8. Must include a metaphor or similie

I stood out like a sore thumb

  • Nicko

    1) number and animal

Had lots of dogs as kids
But there was this one dog
    He was special
    Found him in a crematorium
    I kid you not
    My brother named him Nick
After me cause I gave him to him
If you get what I mean
He could bloody near talk that dog
    Talk like me

    3. category : Life

    We are born, mashed up,

    5. Formed poem (excluding haiku/senryu)

    6. Alcohol or Drugs

    Single syllable

    I got high to write
    a bit of truth,
but what I got was dull
    and what I wrote
was line and line then line
    of words, not thoughts,
    each less than the last

  • silvershoes

    7. 10-13 lines

I became used to the banging
    to the endless noise
    and invisible silence
I became used to the foot tapping
    and finger ticking
I became used to the hand patting
    and tongue clicking
I became used to these things,
    through gritted teeth and jaw-clenched
because loving a drummer is loud.

    8. Must include a metaphor or similie

I loved you when you were a lion,
laying languid under the hot sun.
Beautiful. Fierce. Gentle as a lamb.
I loved you still when you were a sloth,
    hanging casually from a bough.
    Slow, steady. Unassuming.
I even loved you as a hippopotamus,
    plowing through the muddy waters.
Comical. Heavy. Dangerous as a bear-trap
    when provoked.
I no longer loved you as a crocodile,
snake eyes glinting above a slick, black lake.
    False. Lethal. Unpredictable.
You were terrible in archaic beauty
as you clenched me in your claws - bones breaking -
    and gnashed into my flesh.

    1. Must mention ONE animal AND ONE NUMBER

    Two cats and one dog-
    who wins?

The three lay curled in the backseat,
    one cat on Sheeva's rump;

    like a bride's veil.

    2. Wild Card

    In suburbia,
the cars are washed on Sundays,
the crazy lady lives in the corner of the road,
and from each rectangular plot of land
comes the hum of unalarmed activity,
the quiet comfort of no surprises.

  • abracadabra

    3. category : Life

I saw life's swarm within the bird.
    Its body, once used to

    of maggots and flees.

    if you have the time

    if it were a colour
    It would be lime
or a bell that would chime
but I'm still in my prime
    but who gives a dime

    7 - 10-13 lines

    The sky today is livid
and stormy and sad. There's a
silly ditty about the army blaring
on the TV and squeaking my
    ears, just because
    you love your homeland.
    There's no power, no lights,
    only the dimness peeking through
the curtains, and I feel like
making love to you, right here
right now, but you're so busy
    watching the news
