Tribute to Robin Williams.

Family was just sitting around the table for dinner and my dad saw a notification that actor Robin Williams had died in his home, details aren't known but it was possibly a suicide. I have also heard he struggled with severe depression. This is so shocking to learn this, and 63 is still young. He was such a fantastic actor, prayers for him and may he rest in peace.

Wanted to create this thread to share your favorite memories, moments, quotes of Robin Williams?? There's many movies I have not yet seen with him in them, like Good Will Hunting which I know he is famous for.

I grew up with him watching Aladdin, Hook, Jumanji and Ms. Doubtfire (which the sequel has been in the making). Also watched Patch Adams in psychology class and his role moved me beyond words.

From the news reports it does seem that it was a suicide. I put the link to an article on the death.

It broke my heart. He was amongst the greatest-s.

Evidently unlike what it seems, being a comedian is too tough and has an opposite effect:
Newton's third law of motion:" Every Action has an Equal and Opposite Reaction"

I read from an article that it's suspected suicide by asphyxiation. I heard he had struggled for many years with alcoholism, but not sure if that is a fact. Very sad to hear, he has always been a favorite in our household. His smile was always contagious and never failed to make me laugh, definitely one of a kind!

I also grew up watching all his movies, Hook, Jack, The Birdcage and Ms. Doubtfire are my favorites! Patch Adams definitely is inspiring, very heartfelt.

    RIP! <3

I think his role in Good Will Hunting had the greatest impact on me. Such an incredible actor, comedian, and person. Very sad.

I absolutely loved Good Will Hunting and Patch Adams. There was a post on Facebook that had a picture from Aladdin (Aladdin and Genie hugging) and it says Genie, you're set free. Heartbreaking.

So sad that a funny outside was such a hurt inside.

The most touching to me: Bicentennial Man (from an Isaac Asimov short story)

He gave an interview years ago where he admitted to being severely bipolar, that he would go off his meds for months at a time & that he would self-medicate (alcohol). Said when he was on his meds he just was not funny.

No you are not. Non of you are. I've never seen anyone here on the table. Our bottoms are going to be soo glued to those sits when the time comes, guaranteed, you could take it to the bank.
Haha I do not believe any of you ( except a couple, in seldom occasions ) ever dare to rip those pages, or even come close to that. On the other hand I am sure you are going to grab onto those pages like your lives are depend on them.
It is so easy on the other side of the screen cheering for the heroes while stepping on the bleeding heroes of real life.

My wife has just asked me why I am standing on the table.

    I said because Ddavid said I wasn't.

I would rip those pages out.

I have read the daily newspaper from back to front since the age of 15.

I am just a different animal.

Sad news to wake up to :(

On a positive note, I like when someone is remembered for all the good things they achieved, and on how much they made you laugh, and I believe for many, this is true in the case of Robin Williams. Remembrance of this man will always bring great childhood memories back.

Can I also point out for the SVU (Law and Order) fans on this site, that Robin appeared in an episode of this programme. Season 9, Ep 17, "Authority" and I thought he played an outstanding part in this.

    R.I.P x

I am sure that Mary-Anne started this thread as a tribute to a great man that entertained millions.

I grew up with him and even my 8 year old daughter knew who he was.

Surely this thread cannot turn into another religious/war debate?!

  • ddavidd

    Haha that was sweet Darren

thanks Abed At least a God with two o's

In the old times when Prophets and saints use to pop up from every angles a guy went to a village and claimed he was god. Villagers told him: hush don't say that. The guy said : why not? The villagers responded: last year some one here clamed he was a Prophet and they hanged him. The guy answered: they should have for I did not send him.

Take it as a hummer tribute to Robin Williams:

Seriously, if this tribute to Robin Williams is defamed in any way, I'll delete the site and suspend Janis!

Loved your post, Darren. Made me feel slightly better about the man's death. I hope there is a heaven and I hope he's in it :)

Funny how personal his death seems to many of us. My heart aches for the loss.

Talking about tribute t Robin Williams. He was not religious. so do not make this tribute to a religion. Haha do not crucify me just because I asked you to stand up on the table for real.

I am the "Patch Adams" that is why you can't even stand me.

The question:: What could be the best tribute to our beloved Robin Williams except by being exactly like him?

  • Maple Tree

Robin Williams was one of my favorite actors/comedians. I first started watching him when Mork and Mindy first aired back in 1978. Being eight years old I was in awe of his adorable sense of humor, then as I grew into my teens, watching his comedy he made me giggle even more. Whoopi Goldberg, Billy Crystal and Robin were a hoot! The three of them together was a riot... So I grew up with Robin Williams and my heart aches.

Life is hard enough, let alone being in the public eye.. Being a celebrety can not be easy... and the mask goes on... My heart aches for his children, family, friends and all who adored him...

I can't help but cry with all the murder and senseless killings happening in our world ... and I don't think Mr Williams would have wanted his death to take first stage in the media as in regards to what is happening in the world.. but then again, he knew how the media ring circus ran... and it's not surprising.

  • Abed

Not meaning to change the path of discussion at all, everybody is free to cry on him and the reminiscence of his roles is cool and stuff.. (so you can just ignore what I'll say next; believe me, Jane, I couldn't keep my mouth shut lol :

I just can't fathom that the whole world is in tears for a person who took the silliest, weakest decision in life, and that is committing suicide .... meanwhile, we all know what's happening in the world, maybe it's the new trend, or maybe people aren't people anymore.

The simplest path to our beloved Robin Williams is "Patch Adam", " dead Poet Society", " Good will Hunting, "Bicentennial Man" I dare you guys to sand up on the table in real life.

Do not judge people Abed. He might died for the same reason THAT CONGESTS OUR HEART IN THE DALY BASIS. The common hurt.

I think when celebrities take their lives, it brings a sense of the realistic nature back to people.

This man had it all. He had family, fame, money - anything he could possibly want would have been his. He was the funniest guy around, and made people laugh for a living. Dream job?!

Yet he still battled addiction. He still battled mental illness. These properties are incredibly real, and they do not discriminate. Addiction and mental illness hits humanity, no matter how much money you have, if you are gay or straight, black or white, religious or not.

If anything comes from his death, I pray it is people realize how very REAL and SERIOUS addiction and mental illness can be. Depression is not a joke, and while it seems incredibly selfish, suicide is the only way these people know how to escape - you don't know what other mental illness could have been going on. When you are in that state, you feel that is the only option, the clearest option. You don't look ahead at what destruction it will bring to your loved ones. You're in THAT moment. It's awful, it's heartbreaking, and we have to eliminate the stigma around mental illness that we currently have. Instead of immediately jumping and saying someone is so incredibly selfish for completing suicide, we need to instead educate ourselves. What could possibly have gone on that they felt ending their lives was the only solution? Were there warning signs?

I've begun to get very involved with mental illness education, and it has helped open my mind and heart about the very real issue that is facing this world. We are broken, people. All of us, in some form or another.

  • Hannah Lizette

Completely agree with everything you said, Britt. Took the words right out of my mouth.

Also, just because the death of a celebrity has taken the spotlight for just a moment doesn't mean that anyone has forgotten the Gaza/Israel conflict and how the toll of deaths arise each day. There are billions of people in this world and tragedy affects every single person in some form...and each single one is worthy of recognition. Robin Williams touched many hearts with his comedy and I have no doubt in my mind that he has saved lives with his comedy, someone who was just as broken inside as him...who needed a pick-me-up and watched a movie of his instead of taking their life.

  • Colm

Just because people are sad to hear about Robin Williams' death doesn't mean they don't care about the pain, suffering and deaths of other people around the world. The fact that people are sad about his tragic death shows their humanity, its natural.

Many people know people or loved ones who have died by suicide and many more have suffered from depression and to call it/them weak or selfish shows a lack of understanding. It is always tragic when somebody takes the gift of their own life and I think people are so affected by this case because Robin Williams was such an outwardly happy, successful and respected man that it is a little shocking that his depression could be masked like that.

Depression and suicide is something that could happen to and effect anybody, and moments like this are reminders of that. If any good comes from this its that maybe people will become more aware of the problems of depression and maybe they will be more willing to talk about it and seek help.

  • Poet on the Piano

Can't add much more to what Britt, Hannah, and Colm talked about, because they brought the truth here.

There is still a stigma around mental illness and suicide. It's much more complex than saying and labeling a person as selfish, just like I don't think it's fair to compare people's problems as it could make the person feel like they made up their issues or even undermine them. We all struggle. I think it's foolish to come to the conclusion that a person is ungrateful for life because they are suicidal... no, they are stuck in the mindset that maybe this is the only way to escape the pain, or they are not wanted. We must try our hardest to be understanding. Depression is not something that just comes and go, same with other disorders. People suffering have every right to help and there should be no shame in seeking that, whether therapy or medication. We shouldn't distance ourselves and put in one category, the weak ones, and us, the strong ones for wanting to survive. Suicidal thoughts may go against human nature and our basic instinct, but the person experiencing them should not feel ashamed or like they have to isolate themselves lest they be humiliated.

The most important thing in my mind is to focus on educating ourselves and others. I think with this story we need to be careful not to sensationalize suicide as others may be vulnerable, for example making sure to not go into detail about the suicide, but we need to recognize the stigma that still surrounds mental illness. It does not mean we have no care or concern for others suffering in the world, in fact, this makes me think about those who have committed suicide that are not remembered.

We need to be encouraging for others to seek help. I've read that when one is depressed, one isolates and finds it hard to open up, possibly because of fear of being judged or dismissed. But breaking the stigma is what matters here. It's real and very present in our lives.

This actually reminds me of a quote I'd heard from another person. We all react to things differently. And how true is that?? We are human. One situation may affect us more than other but that doesn't mean it's silly.

    -

Anyway, I'm glad everyone's sharing memories and their favorite movies of him. It's amazing how a lot of us grew up with him. He brought a lot of laughter to people of all ages everywhere. I just saw on Fox news that he would travel to visit soldiers and do a comedy act for them? That's quite inspiring.

    ^^^^

Abed...I know you have faced a lot of atrocities that we in the western world can only imagine but, have you ever actually experienced the effect of loosing a person through suicide? I sincerely hope not. Yes, I would agree that it may seem to be a cowardly act but, if you have lived close to a person with a mental illness then you would know that they fight these tendencies on a daily basis. To them, it's a war that is sometimes lost....I hope you never have to loose someone close to you in this way.

Yes...Robin Williams was an amazing person...I've always been a huge fan of his....bit of useless trivial....our family cats years ago were named Mork and Mindy haha!!! Such sad news...Climbs on the table with Darren and Colm :)

What you felt is exactly the same thing I feel when some people comment on the threads I post. got the picture now?

  • Colm

I don't like to clog up what is a rememberance thread but if talking about the issue raises awareness then maybe its a good thing. We probably should talk more openly about depression and suicide.

Tragedy is generally defined as something that could have been avoided, or a death that shouldn't have happened. The deaths of those innocent people in Gaza is a tragedy. The death of Robin Williams is a tragedy. Both could (and should) have been avoided. People haven't suddenly forgotten about Gaza etc or it hasn't become irrelevant because of Robin Williams death. People, and most people do feel sympathy for both. Both are very different symptoms of very different problems. It is naive, disrespectful and irresponsible to trivialise or dismiss either situation.

People don't choose to have depression. If somebody has cancer for example, everybody is supportive, but depression is something that is hidden, there is a stigma surrounding it. Every person is different: some people might have high blood pressure or be at a high risk of lung disease or cancer. And some people are more susceptible to depression: maybe they don't have as developed a coping strategy for example, or their hormone levels are different or their brain works in a certain way. It shouldn't be dismissed as weak or brushed under the carpet but discussed as a medical problem of which suicide is a possible symptom. One that only has to occur once in a moment of absolute desperation.

I totally agree with what Colm has written . I am in no place to judge. I will be surprised if there is any serious drugs in Robin's toxicology . Most addicts chose to die the way they lived and any chemical imbalance affects judgment in my humble opinion

Not to take away from this tribute thread
But the outgrief resulting from 1 deathto people being killed in rapid succession is a serious issue
