A Review of the Weekly Contest

Winning this weekly contest made me curious about the history of the site. (Plus I've hit a slow period in the practice.) So, looking at all still-existing winners since the site began I found that *220* authors penned *841* winning poems (not counting those removed by the authors). More than half of the authors had a single poem win (*121*). Pretty good diversity!

Here are the legends, the top ten winners of the weekly contest:

    Rank - # wins - author
    01 - 35 - Melpomene
    02 - 26 - Melissa
    03 - 25 - silvershoes
    04 - 24 - Poet on the Piano
    05 - 20 - Saerelune
    6T - 19 - nourayasmine
    6T - 19 - sibyllene
    8T - 18 - Meena Krish
    8T - 18 - RaniaMoallem aka Ms SunShine
    10 - 16 - The Queen

And here is a breakdown of how many poems were from each category (remember it has not been possible to nominate Love Poems since Janis last fiddled with the site):

    228 sad poems
    215 miscellaneous poems
    176 poems about life
    096 love poems
    074 nature poems
    034 dark poems
    012 friendship poems
    003 funny poems
    002 special events poems
    001 slang poem

This is really neat, Larry! And I'm with Britt, it's fun to see it all organized and it's amazing what good things our curiosity can lead us to. Thanks for posting this! Love this site and all the poets even more.... brings us together.

Interesting stats Larry. May I add my own? How about the member who probably has the most forms EVER posted to his account and has only won with one form? Unjustly so in my opinion? This man was such in inspiration to me when I first joined P&Q back in 2006..

Mr Steven Beesley is a wonderful writer who is very knowledgeable with formed poetry... He taught me a great deal as well Hellon!

  • Larry Chamberlin

Yes, Hellon, Steven won twice, though only once for a formed poem:
Let The Wind Be My Friend (2008-08-05) and Garden of Eden (Kyrielle) (2005-08-26) by Steven Beesley

    and another improbability:
If... (Italian sonnet) (2005-06-21) is the only win by Robert Gardiner

Wow. Just wow. Larry, you are a phenomenal human being. Thanks for taking the time and energy to put this together. I'm surprised and honored to be so high up on the list. I rarely write poetry anymore, but I better step to it if I want to hold my rank :)

Bunches, I totally agree. My OCD is tingling with satisfaction.

As for Robert Gardiner, he was one of my first favorites on PnQ. Shame he hasn't received more acknowledgment. I'm surprised to not see some other poets on the list as well. And shouldn't Sibs be higher?

I agree! Robert really deserves a highlight, reading his poems; form & style, he is a school!

Inspiring members and great verses, wrote most of the poetry forms and sadly never won!
Giving a message that nominating good poetry must always be without bias.

Not enough people talking slang on this site hey.

This was great to read, thanks Larry!
