This contest will have 2 rounds, first round is formed poetry, second round is free form.

The first round starts now and will be due on SUNDAY, 31 MAY 2015, by midnight PnQ time.

Format: a Tanka. Tanka is a poetry form originating over 1,200 years in Japan, used primarily as spontaneous love poems, and light hearted pieces. It became the most popular form for awhile, then dropped out of general usage until a couple hundred years ago. At its rebirth, the name tanka was applied and has been used since then. It is five lines, and the first three lines are similar to a haiku or senryu. It is most commonly used now to describe nature or human nature.

The structure is as follows:
5 syllables
7 syllables
5 syllables
7 syllables
7 syllables

Spelling will count, but not as much as imagination, creativity, strength and clarity of the message.

Topic of the first round is . . . YOU! Take something that is important to your most core being and write about it. Don't be so specific that we can guess who is the author; if it is unique to you, frame it in universal form.

As an example of the topic & format, look at the following:

"Family Foundation" (Note the syllabic structure.)

Child, you'll see future (5)
events not meant for my eyes; (7)
carry me forward (5)
build your life of strong timber (7)
from the forest of my love. (7)

This is a poem about my daughter, vitally important to me, but by not naming her, no one would know that it was me.
