Another competition...another totally random topic...I recently bought one of these and I totally am in love with it...reminded me of my childhood so I just had to have it. I just noticed that...by calling members out I got a better response than expected so...I'll try it again...calling all of the last peops...but now adding...Kakira, Poetess, GB, Mel..Beautiful Soul and Abby and Nicko...who came shy last time round!!!

If I've forgotten to mention you please do not feel that you can't participate...I've just been overseas for a bit and...I've just forgotten about you....temporarily...

    EDIT

I'm definitely going to add Colm to my list...I just know his granny/aunty/someone in his family would have owned one of these so...no shafting off this time lad!!!

    Instant Poem ~

"Remember beauty of the old days?
    the sewing machines which amaze

My shirt is torn, in need for stitches,
    oh, my foot terribly aches!"

I can't come up with something better hahaha

    Simple Machines

    Machines that require no electricity
    preserved so artfully with authenticity
remind us of another period in time,
an industrial revolution in its prime.
Busy hands and feet with independence so sweet
seems now obsolete, except to the indiscrete,
who feel peaceful mechanical rhythm and rhyme
in returning to the simplicity sublime.

    Title: Memories of a Child

    Back in the days,
    when loneliness befriended me and
    we got drunk with imagination,
our house became the streets of Guanajuato,
    cobblestone alleys,
that were walked by our tipsy
    feet.

    In that state,
    we wandered the rooms aimlessly,
    like drunkards, laughing,
    almost falling on our backs
    while searching on our pockets
    for a key to unlock
    our madness

    But we never found one.

    Instead,
    we became like thieves
    wanting to steal someone's attention.
So when we saw that in the hallway,
    covered by a white blanket,
    our hands did not hesitate...

    [yes...]

    ---

    we rode
    the treadle sewing machine
while we got high on fun

    speeding and speeding,
    turning the wheel,
    while sitting on the pedal,
    click, clack, click, clack,
    click, clack...

the pedal went from side to side.

    ----

Next time we knew of reality,
    we heard the sirens -
    mom's voice calling us,
and we were back at home.

    Her palms are calloused
    and her fingers raw
    from uneven stitches;
    memories quilted into
    a family with mix-matched
    t-shirts in every color,
    from every road
    she traveled as a teen.

    Some would say
    the patterns of gold
    would make more
    than their worth -
    how can you price
    a lifetime of moments
    captured by a wild heart?

Ok....thanks to those of you who took the time to write about this lovely, old fashioned, piece of machinery. As I said, I recently bought one of these and it's just beautiful...the art work on the machine itself is so intricate it's quite mind blowing.

Anyway, they were all great writes but I think Luce just managed to nudge ahead with her verse. I especially liked these lines...

    we rode
    the treadle sewing machine
while we got high on fun

    speeding and speeding,
    turning the wheel,
    while sitting on the pedal,
    click, clack, click, clack,
    click, clack...

So...Congrats to Luce and, once again, thank you all.

I have a sister that earned her living on the sewing machines with electric motors for many years and I believe Luce may have animated the old fashion work of art that was the theme of this contest

    So...Congrats to Luce...well deserved

I recall the old lady two houses down had my father replace a spoke on an antique spinning wheel
