PnQers -- Where do you live?

  • Melpomene

A few years ago one of the members of a club I was apart of created a thread about sharing where members live. Each member gathered images from google and posted them in the thread with a brief description of what these images were. Now when I say share images of where you live, I do not mean post screen grabs of your house from google maps.

Images could include a beach you like to go to, an overall city view, members even included images of what their money looked like in different countries. I found when we did this it was a real eye opener to all the amazing places we represent. I enjoyed seeing images from places I otherwise would never have heard of being all the way over here in the land of Aus.

I'm going to go collect some links from google of my home and share these with you below.

    Neat to share & see!

I live in Arcola, IN, a small (unincorporated) farming community right outside of the bigger city Fort Wayne. Population, maybe 100? Or less.

There's an elementary school where my mom works at, a playground, a volunteer fire department, bar, Methodist church, Catholic church, and car repair shop.

What's Arcola most known for? Truck & tractor pulls which just happened a few weeks ago. And I actually live across the street from them so it keeps me up a few nights.

    The elementary school:

I live In Gorleston on sea in East Anglia England.

It is part of the Great Yarmouth Borough.

    In the county of Norfolk.

Great Yarmouth and Gorleston are famous for their beaches

here is Great Yarmouth's Golden Mile

    http://www.great-yarmouth.co.uk/places-to-go/seafront.aspx

Here is an image of Gorleston Beach

    http://www.great-yarmouth.co.uk/places-to-go/beaches-and-piers.aspx

Great Yarmouth is famous for its Heritage.

We have a monument for Admiral Horatio Nelson or Lord Nelson
    (Battle of trafalgar)

He was born in this county and spent a lot of his time in Great Yarmouth.

    here is the monument
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Britannia_Monument

    here is the Nelson museum
    http://www.nelson-museum.co.uk/

here is the pub/inn where Nelson lodged in Yarmouth

    http://www.closedpubs.co.uk/norfolk/greatyarmouth_wrestlers.html

    (Unfortunately closed now)

We also have a saxon castle built around the 3rd century at Burgh castle (only a few miles from gorleston)

here is a good website giving details of where it is located and info.

    http://www.norfarchtrust.org.uk/burghcastle

Probably one of the most interesting things about Yarmouth is the Town wall built in 1284. (building commenced)

    here are some great images

    https://www.flickr.com/photos/suewhite/sets/72157602536167374/

This wall runs the length of Great Yarmouth.

Great Yarmouth is also the mouth of the Norfolk broads
    huge protected wetlands.

    images and info here

    http://www.broads-authority.gov.uk/

my final piece of info is about the Church in Great Yarmouth

It was here I married in 2001

images and a great write up here

(including a mention of The Charles Dickens book, David Copperfield, the Peggoty family lived in Yarmouth)

the church was built in 1101 and bombed in 1942 leaving only the tower and the walls standing.

I hope you enjoy my history lesson.

    This is REALLY cool.

My turn. I was raised in Piedmont, California (well-to-do town), surrounded by Oakland (diverse community), a 15 minute drive to Berkeley (hippie central) and San Francisco (major tourist destination).
Also, just minutes from East Bay Regional Park (hundreds of miles of open land), as well as one of the only Redwood Parks in the world.
About a 20-30 minute drive to wine country (like Napa, Sonoma, and Santa Rosa.)
I went to UC Davis, a university in California, and now I live in South Lake Tahoe, also in California.
I've been privileged to live in some of the most scenically manifold places in the world. I don't think I'm biased? Lol. I'm very biased.

    -

I've spent a lot of time hiking in the Redwoods with my dad. No pictures on google can do the forest justice. Hmm.

This is one of the trails I horseback ride on in East Bay Regional Park. Miles and miles of trails with forests, rolling hills, creeks, meadows, and a big lake.

OK, I live in Tahoe now, which is a world famous tourist destination. It's breathtakingly beautiful and I get to see these views every day I leave the house. Be jealous. Yes, it really does look like it does in these pictures.

I've had a quick sneak peak and I can't wait to get home from work and take a look at all of these potential travel destinations!

BS, even though your home is small I think it would be wonderful to see. Yaki, you should show these people your current home, it's stunning!

These are all quite fascinating and I had fun looking at all the pictures of where you guys live. I thought I'd add some pictures of Glasgow which is where I grew up for anyone who doesn't know *cough* :) I've just got one for now...but I will add to it. Finding it difficult to find actual pictures of the area I grew up in as it was demolished to make way for the M8 motorway. My primary school is still standing so I will start with that...just discovered the chapel attached (where I was baptised/made communion
etc is in a very bad shape...so sad...

    My primary school

Glasgow boasts a lighthouse in it's city centre...among other things it is a gallery for Charles Rennie McIntosh...famous Scottish architect & Artist...

Had many a good feed in this pub...so sad to read that it's been knocked down..

I've been trying to find a picture that would do the Barras justice but, unfortunately, it appears to have gone all trendy now. The "Really Barras" is a place I have very fond memories of...every weekend my dad used to take a stall out (he worked 5 days a week and repaired old push bikes in between) and tried to sell those push bikes at the Barras...if he was lucky enough to sell something my brother and I got a bag of welkes on the way home...fond memories of the barras...

Hellon, that street is not just long it's totally Unbroken! How far did you have to run to get to an alley?

  • Hellon

According to my research is was around .5 of a km in length. I stayed around the middle of the street so...either was it was a long walk to get out of there haha!!! I was a goody two shoes so no need to look for alleyways...don't recall there being any in the area anyway. The other side of the street was all factories etc and...this is what was behind the street..

There were three pitches in total and they were always in use...probably some of the best soccer players cut their teeth here....affectionately known as The Plots...no idea why.

    EDIT

Ok...I can see this link didn't work and I can't find another. If you're keen to see the picture google football pitches behind MacLellan Street Glasgow and it should be under Lost Glasgow - Timeline Photos/Facebook

    I live in Utica NY.

Back in the 20 and 30s...our city was the "getaway" city for the Italian mafia....

It's rustic and very close to the Aderondacks mountains. Being a nature lover, this makes me very happy....

I'm sharing links of the City I live in.... The nature places I go to often.... And a pick of an old historic mansion... Owned at one time by the mafia....

Bumping this thread, because why not?

I'm from Mississauga, ON, live in Brampton,ON, and pretty much in Toronto most days (for school), so you're going to get a mix of random pictures! The cities are all pretty big, Brampton has something like 500,000, I'm pretty sure Mississauga is like 700,000 or something like that, and Toronto's population is something like 2 million.

On fun fact, Mississauga, had one of the oldest mayors, who held office from 1978-2014, She's 94 now.

I live in Voorburg, a suburb of The Hague. I would not want to live anywhere else, because I have a beautiful big city within walking range, a small local town centre with ancient houses and quaint little shops very near to my house, the beach within 10 minutes by car and beautiful woods, parks and dunes within 10 to 20 minutes by car.

I have a second house with land around on a park near my first house, and that one is surrounded by farmland. I go there to relax and work in the big garden, or sit at the pond that is at the end of my garden. My friend Peter has used it as a guest house every time he came to work on Zero Point and loved to be there, because it is so quiet. I have fruit from the garden all through summer also:)))

My most favourite places are Scheveningen beach and the dunes at Meijendel, a nature reserve area, where I shed most of the 110 pounds I have lost! I walk 10,000 steps a day, and try to go to such areas as often as I can. Nothing is more beneficial than a walk in nature!

    Very beautiful pictures of Scheveningen:

As I am on kindle I can't (I could with lots of work) leave images or links from my town. But even if I did you wouldn't get many, it's a smallllllll place. I love in Butler, Georgia (actually a smaller place but it's unincorporated). The entire county only has 2 yes two red lights in it. Both are on the highway that runs through here east to west and vv. The counties population is somewhere around 8500 people. The town of Butler is approximately 1,900. The place I live is 110. That probably includes the pets too. This county is a farming community. Butler has about 6 restaurants. 1 of them being Subway. No other chain restraints. We have multiple churches, no liquor stores, and the sidewalks roll up at about 9. Meaning if you need anything you better get it before sun goes down. There was quite some controversy about this county several years ago about the segregated proms, there was even a movie about it starring Raven Symons. Though it wasn't that long ago this happened I have found since being here the only controversy is was with the parents. There is no segregated proms now and it seems as though it really never affected the kids anyway. There is one primary school, one elementary and one for middle and high school to share. Graduating class is generally 60-70 ppl. I am not from this town, I grew up in a much bigger place, Warner Robins, Georgia where the population alone was mostly resulted from Air Force base.

Ingrid, your place sounds great. I love the Netherlands (OK, I've only been to Amsterdam, but I love IT.)

Kay, I grew up outside of Chattanooga, Tenn & drove through a lot of back-country Georgia. I bet I passed through Butler at one time or another. Given my luck with lights, I probably got stopped by Both of your Red Lights.

For the record, I did not get stopped by ANY red lights in Amsterdam and would not have even if my wife had not been with me. ;8-)

LOL, Larry, we have a red light district, but it is but such a small part of us. Holland is a country of hard working, music loving people and only a very, very small group is into that kind of stuff!

Hi, well I live not far out of Manchester in a little town called Wigan (though I am originally from Warrington. There's not much really to do here so I travel to Manchester quite alot.

Anyway, here is a park I like to go on picnics with my nieces and nephews. They have a fantastic ice cream cafe which you can get so many different flavours of ice cream at.
    http://www.wlct.org/wigan/parks/mesnes/

Here is a place I always go walking and here there's a place Wigan is famous for, lots of country to walk through and a place where I usually end up with a water fall and it's where I write alot of my poetry though mainly in Spring or Summer.
    http://www.visitnorthwest.com/sights/haigh-hall/

Here's Wigans Rugby and football stadium where I had one of my first jobs and got told off by the boss for having my hands in my pockets on match day lol. Wigan is famous more so for Rugby
    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/DW_Stadium

Tbh I am pretty boring but as I say there's not really much to do in Wigan apart from bowling which I do sometimes and the cinema oh but I do enjoy ice skating though the website for that is rubbish and didn't show much.
    I love this idea btw.

Edit: George Formby is from Wigan and lives not far from me https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Formby

I live in Randolph, MA - about 15 mins outside Boston. There's not a whole lot in my town different from the average suburb, but here are a few things that came to mind:

our giant movie theater (it goes two additional floors underground):
    http://graphics8.nytimes.com/images/2008/02/20/business/20cinema.600.jpg

    Town Hall:
    https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/81/Randolph_Town_Hall.JPG

and then if you drive a short ways into the woods, a town over, you can get this kind of view of the Boston skyline from up in the hills:

I love the view of the skyline. I'll bet it's equally impressive in the spring.

    Em,
I found this for Mesnes Park:
    http://www.countrysmallholding.com/poultry/mesnes_park_waterfall_wigan_1_4086680

and this for Haigh Country Park:

They both look perfect for inspiration & for spending hours by them. In Houston we have no hills & hence no waterfalls. I miss Tennessee.

Hey guys - So I was born and raised in Adelaide Australia. Its at the bottom of the country.
We are mostly known for our wines. I have lived here my whole life and as much as I love travelling to other cities, I think I prefer the laid back here. Everything is close to the city, the wineries just a short half hour or hour drive (depending on the area). Population of Adelaide is only 1.31 Mil.

Images are: Glenelg Beach (always good for a sunset in summer)
