What street will you take, in today's world where they have gym class on a computer, study hall at the tip of your fingertips, and a substandard education where the main importance is focused on funding through biased testing rather than teaching, we are in a serious decline within the world educationally, and therefore it won't be long before we lose what little power we have left. We must teach our children to go beyond this new free educational system they call school, they must be taught to do their own higher level of learning , must read, learn to question and to seek the truth of history, so they one day will be able to make their own.......because as it stands now we are failing them miserably, there are too many children being left behind in the "no child left behind" era

I believe this is systematic, to have the general population reach only to a set level. Lets be honest we only need so many doctors, lawyers and so on. I think public education is here to supply an obedient workforce! Yes Bob we must teach our kids to history to the value of life, to our traditions, hell to be street smart!!!
And they, our children must strive to better themselves, to work hard to pave a good future ahead.. I am blessed to be able to provide a privet education to my daughter and even more blessed that Olivia ~smiles~ is working so hard in school to get good marks, to understand clearly the world around her... She is in great 10 and my Ex and me have taught her everything we know... Its all up to Her now and she knows it...

Public schools need work, yes. I went to one of the top public schools in the U.S. (Piedmont, Ca) so my experience isn't comparable to that of many others in this country, but it's given me insight into the worth of a great education. No kid should be left behind, and that's a social and political problem (hello, government!), not an educational one.

Education itself is not a problem. The grading system is a bit of an issue. Grades create their own set of false goals/reward value. Still, a poor public school education is better than no education.

I was stimulated to think for myself and use education as a tool to make change or make the world better. It took me a little while to figure out, but education is an opportunity and a privilege. So far, the higher up I've climbed educationally, the more aware of the world I've become. I did choose Psychology and Sociology as majors, so that probably had an impact on my idea that education = mind-opening.

I think people lacking in education are more likely to be ignorant and base ideas on quick heuristics rather than theory-based approaches. You have to be aware of fallacies in order to correct them. [Then again, plenty of educated people remain ignorant.] What I don't get is why schools don't receive more government funding, donations, charity... A good education is the greatest gift any child can receive. Why, as a first world country, is our educational system rated so low in comparison to other first world countries? What are we doing wrong?

I agree the public educational system in the US is abysmal, but I see good teachers making what they can of the constraints put on them. In spite of the pressure, these teachers inspire students and guide them to resources that will fulfill that child's ambitions to improve their future.

The anachronism "no child left behind" masks the most recent failure of the system. In Texas, where Bush instituted that policy prior to running for President, the system has degenerated into teaching kids how to take the standardized test. Period. It has no bearing on this process that the standardized test is largely irrelevant to the educational needs of the student; rather, the emphasis is on achieving that"excellent" rating which qualifies the school district for the maximum state funding or the maximum rate of property tax.

One side effect of this obsession with testing is that, in order to maximize the school's rating, students are shuffled into Special Needs categories exempt from the ranking criteria. Students whose support systems impede them are marginalized and left to face even more difficult challenges due to the stigma this classification brings, especially as they seek preparation for higher education or employment.

Look to the systems in some other countries and they will blow your mind. Singapore, Sweden, Switzerland and Canada don't spend endless hours teaching standardized test taking and yet they are ranked highest among world systems. Koan, I hear you. Sometimes I think the government bureaucrats think like Ted Knight as the heartless golfing judge in Caddyshack: "The world needs ditch diggers, too."

Larry, my other daughter, Tiffany was in public school and she was told by her teacher that she should be a standup comedian. Now Im not saying that anything is wrong with that but she was never a funny type if you know what I mean,,, so can you imagine when she told about us this option... I wanted to punch the teacher in the face repeatedly
because I know that he just filled out a generic form to get paid...

We are evolving from Homo sapien to Homo robotus. It's all part of our process. We'll be uploading all kinds of information straight to our brain, no need to learn crap. Just how to find it.
