Another voting discussion

Because of the debate I figure maybe I could throw the idea out to add an option either on the profile or as an option in submitting poems. People who want it have it. Ppl who don't wont have it. I could get by with that. This would make me much happier considering I could put poems up and not get voted on.

Sorry for bringing.it up.again but maybe making it an option would make ppl happy? Idk just another idea

Hi there - I'm a bit confused by what you mean. Are you saying people who want to be voted on can keep that option, but those who don't have the option to turn it off?

Personally, I like the voting system. I think if you post your work anywhere publically, people have the right to rate/comment/suggest, etc. However, what I think should change is the grading system. I don't think people should be allowed to leave a 1 or a 2 without going through some sort of process - perhaps like the praising a comment one. That is, there has to be a legitimate reason for leaving that mark because, let's face it, most marks that bad are done for personal reasons.
Or perhaps if such marks are left, you have to leave a comment and explain why you feel it only deserved that mark. Most 1s and 2s never come with comments, do they? People grade and then make off.
Just a thought and all the best,
    Ben

I feel it should be impossible to vote without leaving a comment first. This system allows our weaker brothers and sisters to cowardly down vote work of more gifted members without being seen.

That would probably be the quickest and best solution, Ingrid: comment, then you can vote. It would certainly make people think twice.

I'd argue to remove the voting system all together, but Larry came up with a 2-level voting system that includes feedback in it, and allows the person to recast a vote, and I think it's pretty a good idea, it was originally posted here: http://www.poems-and-quotes.com/discussion/topic.html?topic_id=144340

Been discussed repeatedly for eons, before my existence , and from what I gather, during my absence. It actually adds a social impact to the site, and I doubt it can be fixed because for some it's not broken, and for others they'll never change regardless, I do like the suggestion that a comment should accompany a vote, but then you'd have people say, "great poem", 5, 5, 5, or " I didn't like it" 3, 3, 3,.....what I found ironic is someone gave some constructive criticism on a poem, and it was right on and yet they still gave it a five, so that's not a very good rating, at least be honest, people can't improve if you keep sugar coating it with 5's, then again some could care less about the comments or the votes, and those are my heroes....:)

^some could care less about the comments or the votes, and those are my heroes....:)

Disagree, personally. I don't care about the votes but I do care about comments, most particularly those which seek to analyze the poem, give their interpretation or report their reaction to it. To me this sort of comment is invaluable feedback as to whether I am communicating.

As to the requirement to make a selection of even a short feedback: the purpose is accountability. If you don't like a poem enough to give a low vote let your name be associated to your vote. I feel it will reduce the anonymous low voting that is prompted by jealousy.

Come on, peeps. A little bit of insincerity can save lives.

But a moderate amount of insecurity wastes many lives

But the smart people need to spread the mediocrity to succeed and govern. 5's all round! We're all exceptional.

    In a sea of mediocrity
    true genius is mere frivolity
    hear the cries of inequality
    beauty cursed to verrucosity
    stand outs lead to animosity
    Holmes must have his Moriarity
    insipid praise - generosity.

    Larry - it's a straight 5 from me, lol

ps. I guess in truth, unless someone really has it in for you, it all balances out in the end.

I agree with Larry, ratings for me do not matter, it's all about the comment

I think you refer to my response where I suggested that after voting, and before the vote is recorded, the member has to either select from a list as to what was wrong with the Poem, or if the comment was high, what was good about it or even To write their own small blurb and the vote would be recorded along with their comment and name

That's a great idea, the name thing, that way there would be some accountability for the voter and trends would be easier to spot, also people need to understand as much down voting that goes on, there's also. A lot of up voting as well......a fact that few want to admit.
