    Ok. I'm game.

1). What do you remember as being your "first" memory and around what age?

We had a huge backyard in Atlanta, Georgia when I was a kid. Where our yard ended, a forest began. My dad was out exploring one morning and found an abandoned, wooden playground. He wanted to show my sister and me. In order to get there, I distinctly remember walking along wide fence posts. They were probably 2 feet off the ground, but it felt like 20. The view made me dizzy. I was three or four.
That may seem like a "scary" memory, but it brings peace & warmth when I think about it. I love my family.

2). What was the first thing you wanted to be when you grew up?

Batman. And then a veterinarian or the singer in a rock & roll band.

3). Who was your first role model and why?

My sister. No idea why, she was a bully! Haha.

4). Who was your first celebrity crush?

Johnny Depp for his boyish charm and weirdness. I was maybe five when it started.

5). When was your first time being home alone?

Can't recall. My parents are busy-bodies, so I was probably home alone a lot at a young age. Our neighborhood is soooo nice and safe. We often left the front door wide open so neighbors could come in and say hello.
Also, can you really be alone in your home with 2 lizards, 3 fish, 6 cats, and a dog?

6). What was your favorite activity as a child?

Reading, making lists, or horseback riding. Oh man, I still love all 3.

7). What was the first word you spoke as a baby/child (if you know or were told)

After "mom," it was, "No." Bahaha.

8). Who was the first person to inspire you to write or comment on your work?

Maybe my dad. He used to keep a journal and he'd read us excerpts now and then. It had poems, stories, reflections... It was a lovely hobby.

9). What was the first run-in you had with poetry?

Ohhh too long ago to remember. My first true love was Robert Frost, but Dr. Seuss and Shel Silverstein were in my life long before him.

10). What was the first poem you wrote and how do you feel about it now?

Some sappy love poem with all the cliches and filler words you can imagine. I feel nostalgic about it.

1). What do you remember as being your "first" memory and around what age?
-- When trying to answer this so many memories flash by and some of them I'm not sure if I actually remember or if I was told about them. I can't pinpoint a certain one here.

2). What was the first thing you wanted to be when you grew up?
-- A hairdresser. When I was young I would always help shave and cut my brothers hair. From there I thought I would make a fantastic hair dresser.

3). Who was your first role model and why?
-- My eldest brother. We have 15 years between us he would patiently deal with me waking him up at 4am to watch cartoon that weren't even on at that time. He rocked me to sleep in a pram that always had a wheel falling off. Always cut the crust off my sandwiches and shaped them into squares or triangles. Most importantly he completed a first aid course and was able to flush my eye when I got chilli pepper in it ... and bandaged my hands when I touched the heater.... He taught me patience, kindness, the importance of family and how to be safe around hot things haha.

4). Who was your first celebrity crush?
-- I think it was Chad Michael Murray or something like that.

5). When was your first time being home alone?
-- That didn't happen until I was probably about 16. We lived in a pretty dodgy neighbourhood and my mum would always be a worrier. It took her a while to realise she could go to the corner shop and pick up milk and bread without having to worry about me.

6). What was your favorite activity as a child?
-- Art and craft time with my mum. She's always been very fantastic at letting my creativity fester. The other would be playing video games with my youngest older brother.

7). What was the first word you spoke as a baby/child (if you know or were told)
    -- Mum.

8). Who was the first person to inspire you to write or comment on your work?
-- Probably also my mum. She was always doing creative stuff with me.

9). What was the first run-in you had with poetry?
-- From music. I listened to a lot of hip hop, fell in love with Tupacs music and from there I was very into poetry.

10). What was the first poem you wrote and how do you feel about it now?
-- Some horrible loss of friendship poem. I cringe for being a silly kid who cared about that friendship as it was very one sided.

1). What do you remember as being your "first" memory and around what age?

A girl came up to me and announced that we were married, and I started crying. This was kindergarten, so about 4/5ish.

2). What was the first thing you wanted to be when you grew up?

I really wanted to work at NASA, so an aerospace engineer.

3). Who was your first role model and why?

I think it'd have to be my cousin, he's 8 years older than me, taught me stuff, played with me after school, was really smart and I just wanted to be like him. We lived in apartments at that time, and we lived in a complex, and we were right across each other. There was a little patch of forested area near by, and a wicked park that we'd always be running around in. There was also a convenience store nearby that we'd go to in the summer months to buy popsicles with money we foraged or found lying around.

4). Who was your first celebrity crush?

I think it'd have to be sugar lynn beard, she was the host of a TV show i'd watch after school. If she doesn't count then, I'd have to say it was elisha cuthbert when she was the host of popular mechanics for kids.

5). When was your first time being home alone?

Not really able to remember when, I think around grade 6? We moved to a house, and it's a safe neighborhood and they just went to the grocery store.

6). What was your favorite activity as a child?

Probably running around with friends, doing whatever that entertained us. I remember there was a pretty major blackout and we ended up playing hide and seek in the apartment buildings and we had so many people playing, that was pretty fun.

7). What was the first word you spoke as a baby/child (if you know or were told)

    Mom.

8). Who was the first person to inspire you to write or comment on your work?

My grade six teacher, we had a unit on poetry in my language arts class (english) and she really liked my pieces and encouraged me to write more.

9). What was the first run-in you had with poetry?

Apart from Dr. Suess, I think it was Robert Munsch, his books love you forever & 50 below freezing made me look up more of his work at the school library and came across some of his poems.

10). What was the first poem you wrote and how do you feel about it now?

It was a cheesy love poem, extremely cliche and it makes me cringe thinking of it.

    ---

    Thanks for posting this!

So much as just finding the gold.
It's the great, big, broad land 'way up yonder,

ANYTHING outside. Ride bikes, play in the dirt, mow the yard (yeah, I was weird, but we had a riding lawn mower, that was so fun!)

    1) First memory and age.

Dressed up as Wee Willy Winkie and pottering around the playground at nursery rather despondently. I was probably 3 or 4.

    2) What did you want to be when you grew up?

A park warden in Africa - I would still love that job.

    3) First role model and why?

My dad - he grew up on a farm in the 5os and he has always had a solid and indestructible air about him.

    4) first celebrity crush.

While everyone of my generation was fawning over Pamela Anderson, I was obsessing over one of the last generation's sex symbols - the entirely better looking (and more natural) Bo Derek. Anyone who has seen "10" will understand.

    5) First time you were home alone

11 or 12 - my parents were ever dutiful

    6) Favourite activity as a child

eating worms and riding my bike.

    7) First word spoken as a baby/child.

    Daddy, I think

    8) First person to inspire you to write or comment on your work?

    My A level English teacher

    9) What was the first run-in you had with poetry?

Wordsworth's "Daffodils" when I was 11 or 12 - it struck a chord with me. I suppose I have liked the old romantic style ever since.

    10) First poem you wrote and how do you feel about it?

It was called "Castaway" and it was okay, relatively speaking, and I still like it because it has a lot of ideas that are still important to me 23 years later ( I think I was 11)

    All the best

2). What was the first thing you wanted to be when you grew up?

3). Who was your first role model and why?
    - probably my grandmother. She was the nicest, kindest person I knew.

4). Who was your first celebrity crush?
    - Rider Strong aka Shawn Hunter from Boy Meets World.
I was also in love with Sylvester Stallone. I used to watch Cliffhanger over and over when I was a kid.

5). When was your first time being home alone?
    - hmm. Maybe in my early teens. My grandmother never left me alone even to go across the street.

8). Who was the first person to inspire you to write or comment on your work?

Oh, yes. I will shamelessly indulge in this, yes please.

1). What do you remember as being your "first" memory and around what age?
I remember being in my house when I was 2, walking out the side door and watching our bunny, Brambles, in his cage.

2). What was the first thing you wanted to be when you grew up?
A musician. I wanted to sing. Still do.

3). Who was your first role model and why?
My grandmother. Her spirit is like fire. She goes and goes, and there's something about her that makes people want her attention.

4). Who was your first celebrity crush?
Tom Felton as Malfoy. Oh god, I had a horrible picture of him that I printed out and covered in clear tape because we didn't have laminating supplies. I kept it in my back pocket for months.

5). When was your first time being home alone?
That... that I don't remember. I do remember being left with just my sister when we were young. Then we discovered a bat in the basement. There was about as much screaming involved as you'd expect from two girls under 12.

6). What was your favorite activity as a child?
I liked to close my eyes and imagine stories. I liked to draw pictures of characters and write out their family trees over and over again. I liked searching through baby name books for bizarre nicknames to classic names. I liked sitting on the bow of a boat speeding over the ocean and feeling the waves hit my legs.

7). What was the first word you spoke as a baby/child (if you know or were told)
I think I said "Tuk!" because I loved loved loved trucks. I had a big yellow one with two red buttons on it. One button made an engine noise and the other one said "All aboard!" Which is weird actually, for a truck to say.

8). Who was the first person to inspire you to write or comment on your work?
Kindergarten! My whole elementary education was built on being told to write everyday, constantly collaborating with teachers and other students to critique eachother's work and ideas.

9). What was the first run-in you had with poetry?
How does anyone remember something like that? That's like asking what the first song I learned to sing was, or what the first book I read was. I have no idea, it's always been there.

10). What was the first poem you wrote and how do you feel about it now?
Again. Guys, the first poem I wrote was in kindergarten. I think it had an acorn in it? Or it might have been about my cat. I feel.... completely ambivalent about it. And I say that with all honesty.

OMG can I change my childhood crush to the kid who played Casper, the friendly ghost? Devon Sawa. I thought he was soooooo dreamy. Also, Thackery Binx from Hocus Pocus.

    Love these questions.

  • Liz

^^ they both were so dreamy! Lol.

It's funny because when I watched Cliffhanger, I'd have to watch Hocus Pocus first since they were both recorded on the same VHS. I used to get super sad when Binx left at the end. Haha

LOVE reading all these responses! So neat!

1). What do you remember as being your "first" memory and around what age?

    - I don't remember too much of my childhood. Maybe the first thing I remembered was before moving to Indiana, living in Maryland and when my brother and I stayed with my grandparents in MD for 2 weeks while my parents went to Michigan. Loved that townhouse and the memories in it. Going to church together. Mario. My gma's mashed potatoes. My sippy cup. Their dog Ross.

2). What was the first thing you wanted to be when you grew up?

    - I think I wanted to be an FBI agent. I thought in order to help it had to be to catch the big bad guys. Even considered Criminal Justice when looking at colleges. Now, a writer!

3). Who was your first role model and why?

    - First role model probably my dad. He cared so much for me growing up even though sometimes I had a hard time understanding the ways he cared, or his reactions. Now, it's my older brother who lives in the room next to mine.

4). Who was your first celebrity crush?

    - Jesse McCartney! Sang his songs constantly and had a few huge posters that you could get from Disney magazines. Him and Zac Efron. I loved High School Musical.

5). When was your first time being home alone?

    - The only time I can remember is when my parents and brother went to Maryland when I was in my teens. I was by myself for about 5 days. Well, no, I had our family dog as company!

6). What was your favorite activity as a child?

    - I loved drawing and making cards for people. Anything with markers or colored pencils intrigued me.

7). What was the first word you spoke as a baby/child (if you know or were told)

    - No clue. I think I asked my parents too and they don't recall.

8). Who was the first person to inspire you to write or comment on your work?

    - My 6th grade teacher. I had just started writing poetry in a little purple book, poems about my crushes and cliche love, but one she read was about losing my grandma.

9). What was the first run-in you had with poetry?

    - I think finding a book of it or studying it at school. I loved when we had certain weeks dedicated to a certain poet.

10). What was the first poem you wrote and how do you feel about it now?

    - First poem was "Gone", about my grandmother passing. I believe it rhymed and it's definitely nostalgic to look back on it.

She was strong, worked and picked cotton, her mom died when she was 13 so she raised her 2 brothers and sisters. Had 8 children, went back to work within a day after having them. Married an alcoholic and managed to raise 7 great kids (1 died as an infant).

5). When was your first time being home alone?
Rather late in life.... I think around 13 or 14. Though I was allowed to walk to school but it wasn't alone. With other neighborhood kids. My mom was very over protective.

    Momma then daddy

9). What was the first run-in you had with poetry?

The song Rapture by Blondie (first rap song in my opinion) had lots of simple rhyming. I also think sugar hill gang with rappers delight made me think of poetry.

10). What was the first poem you wrote and how do you feel about it now?

    11th grade
First poem I wrote was called "Kim's song". My teacher asked me to read it over the loudspeaker for the class, then her parents wanted me to read it at her funeral. Kind of started my poem eulogies, I have done several to date. But this one was about a classmate who died as a result of drunk driving. It's pretty cheesy in retrospect with over pushed rhymes, but the message was and still is a good one. I lost the original but parts of it were.

There once was a girl named Kim,
Who all of a sudden took driving on a whim,
While at a party drinking with friends,
Like most of us do on weekends,
    (I don't remember the middle)
The angels called and we heard a bell,
Another Angel home to tell her tale,
If you are drinking, hand over your keys,
Remember Kim always, hand them over please.
