Did someone say coffee?

    Oh yes, I did.

Question to coffee lovers, how much coffee do you need to remain awake?

It's like ... I drink coffee and I get more sleepy.

I drink 3 large cups in the morning when I wake...I don't use Creamers or sugar...just black. If I'm out at a restaurant I'll have a small cup in the evening and if I have to do double shifts at the homeless shelter where I work...I drink tons....

Yesterday, I had two chai tea latte with two shots of expresso each and I was so sleepy.

Thanks Andrea. Next time I need to stay awake, I won't add creamers or sugar.

I have, in the past, gone for weeks drinking an entire pot of coffee at work and couple cups at home. Never Had problems sleeping when I wanted to, but that was usually getting to bed about 1:30-2:00 am & getting up at 7:00 am.

Since getting the flu in December I switched to tea, almost exclusively. I still have no problems sleeping, but it doesn't keep me as wired as the coffee.

So basically, coffee does not affect everyone the same way.

Mr. Larry, wired as in awake and alert or just as in awake?

Sometimes, I need something that can keep me awake and fully alert. I'm put off by the idea of energy drinks.

Luce! Thanks for this post. I love chai tea lattes although it's a treasure when I get them.

I literally will drink ANY coffee. I am not picky and like to make coffee at home to save on money. Sometimes it's an adventure though just to go to the gas station and get a cappucino (we don't have a fancy coffee maker at home). I'll drink it black but I'm all for trying new flavors/ creamers. Usually I'll make a pot if I'm up early and will be busy out and about during the day. I try to have a cup or two though if I'm going to stay at home or if I get up late. A few times a week I'll get a dollar iced coffee nearby that is a nice chilled option if I want something more refreshing!

Although my parents (and a few other people) have told me it's wise to limit caffeine. Especially taking certain medications. But I've been trying to work on not having caffeine past a certain time, etc and being mindful about that. I'm a night owl anyway but my sleep is sometimes messed up as it is so I try to have all my coffee as soon as I can in the morning.

    Coffee for life!

When I was little, I tried to drink my grandma's coffee, and I realized that I did not like it. When I was in college, I tried coffee, and I realized that I still did not like it, and then I put like ten things of creamer and sugar, and then I kind of liked it but not too much. That did not affect me really.

I guess I am just going to have to be a coffee smeller, not a drinker.

I LOVE cappuccinos though. My favorite flavor is a white chocolate cappuccino. It doesn't really affect me other than making me feel hot, possible due to the sugar rush.

:d I really want one now.

    Thought I would contribute.

Mary Anne, yeah. I know what you mean with it being something to treasure. (I like the flavor of the chai tea latte. But I specially enjoy the mocha frappucino from Starbucks. )
I don't often drink coffee only when I really want to stay awake, except that, it usually backfires lol I become more sleepier.

I mean I'm usually sleepy. Yet somewhere in me, I still have hopes that coffee may keep me awake someday.

but now that you bring it to my attention, how much would be too much caffeine? I mean are there side effects for drinking too much? Aside from not being able to sleep or stain teeth in the future.

I know caffeine can contribute to high blood pressure, which could then cause strokes.

I don't drink coffee unless it's in a chai latte. I love them but only have them for a rare treat. Generally when I travel or I am out with friends for breakfast. I hate all other forms of coffee. It smells nice but I can't stand the taste. I drink tea, mainly green tea with lemon. That's my morning staple. I drink 2-3 of these a day and find they give me a little pick me up.

I drink between 12-20 cups a day, it's actually all I ever used to drink, but now I'm starting to drink bottled water due to dehydration ....but it doesn't effect me one way or another, I can drink a whole pot and go right to sleep, although I only sleep about 3-4 hours a day if I'm lucky....my preference is maxwell house.

Golly gosh Bob, that's way too much coffee and could be the reason that you only sleep a few hours at a time. Honestly, this is not good for your health, more than two cups per day (just as the standard alcohol table) is unhealthy so..just about everyone of you needs to rethink your caffeine consumption. I have one cup in the morning, because it is a stimulant, and after that...nada. I drink two cups of herbal tea...a milk shake combo and the rest is water.

A lot of my herbal tea comes from a local distributor..

It depends. During the finals month, I need six or seven cups of coffee a day to keep my brain awake and active for 20 hours straight. On regular days, two small cups are enough!

I know it's unhealthy to drink too much coffee, but sometimes I have to.

Noura...I've just been thinking...in your country are the cups of coffee really small but a lot stronger than we would drink? I seem to remember reading something about that? Do you drink it straight? When people say they drink X amount per day how big would the cup be? I guess this could make a difference...when I say I only have one cup of coffee, I mean a mug but, I drink tea from a smaller vessel which I call a cup but, I still think it would be bigger than the 'cup' you talk about..confusing...yeah!

Yeah, we drink coffee in small 50ml cups, and never with milk or sugar or cream. Usually spices such as cardamom and saffron and musk are added to the coffee, and it's as refreshing and delicious as you can imagine, and one small cup is guaranteed to help you stay awake during the day!

  • Larry Chamberlin

I like the cardamon, whether espresso or American
Don't think I've had the musk.

Tea tea tea, all kinds. I dry all kinds of crap to see what they taste and smell like with boiling water. And when someone makes me a cuppa, it tastes so much better.

Hmmmm coffee....love good ole Folgers or Maxwell house, prefer Folgers. I only drink coffee when it's really cold outside and usually only a couple of cups. I load mine with sugar and flavored creamer (hazlenut, or cheesecake) preferably. Never had chai latte. My normal drinks are my diet dr. Pepper and sweet tea. That's the hardest thing about going somewhere other than the south, no sweet tea. We have well water and it's the most delightfultasting water ever!

I didn know coffee could cause high blood pressure. Ohh, could that be a reason why I am told to drink a Coke whenever i feel like I'm energy drained and I'm told is probably because my pressure went down?( there could be no relationship what do ever though)

Bob, no offense, but 12-20 cups sounds unbelievable. I mainly drink water. I'm not a fan of coffee nor of tea, neither of sodas. I realized that I feel great plus with tons of energy when I drink a gallon of water per day... (But I've been told that's a lot of water for someone my weight and size. Specially since I'm not doing exercise.) Dont you like the taste of water?

Hellon, thanks for sharing the link.

I put on a pot in the morning (whenever I wake up) and drink it black or with milk. Later in the day, I like making iced coffee with what's left. Just add milk, sugar, and ice - yum. I really don't know much about coffee, but I like drinking it. Tea is nice too. I find it more therapeutic and relaxing than energizing.
