Making PnQ great again

This list is the mod's so-called Janis Wish List. In the past Janis has looked at this list for improvements to the site. With anticipation that Janis will come within our lifetime we ask the members to review the list, comment on it, suggest additions, rank the items in importance and (channeling Ms Frizzle) take chances, make mistakes, and get messy.

01 Tighten up security on the nomination page so false votes are eliminated (eliminate the 'public vote').

02 "Previous" and "next" buttons to maneuver through a list of poems (such as your own poems, those of another, contest nominations, etc.)

03 Add a comment section to the three complaint areas in mod tools so a mod can apprise the other mods of action pending such as waiting for response to email

04 Add user name recovery to password recovery feature at http://www.poems-and-quotes.com/password.html

05 Fix the glitch so that love/friendship poems can be nominated.

06 Provide for Club Managers to be able to transfer their powers to another when they leave a club. When a club manager quits & then comes back, allow her to regain her manager status. On the same note, if a club manager leaves without transferring powers, allow for a way that the mods can transfer these powers to a member selected by the club.

07 Add an 'Are you sure you want to vote for this poem?' Message to help avoid votes being cast by a weekly contest judge (expert) accidentally hitting them when browsing on touch screens, especially needed with cell phones.

08 Add a 'J' reward for judging. Pink for once a judge, blue for twice, gold three and platinum 4 times or more.

09 Allow a member to change his vote on a poem (both to correct mistakes & allow for editing improvements).

10 Add security to the passwords on the database (they should be hashed, and then stored at the minimum). But allow access by mods (it should take two or more to do so) so we can respond to requests from returning members who have forgotten their passwords.

11 Install an HM icon on poems receiving one (Hms two weeks in a row would create a WIN icon)

12 Set up a "notice button" when a new message arrives while you're on-line.

13 Give the Mods some ability to create new icons recognizing poems &/or members - can require multiple mod approval.

14 Restore the link attached to Awards beneath members' user names [http://www.poems-and-quotes.com/awards.html], and on that page, we should add which Awards indicate nominator status. Also, we should have a differentiation between "Members" and "Nominating Members" in profiles.

15 Automatic warning to people who send out the same message to multiple members s/he has not contacted before (anti-spam).

16 Allow editing of Thread titles by mods and club thread titles by club manager.

17 Create a "private notepad" to store ideas, etc.

18 set up a Favorite Comments tab on the right by Favorite Poems

19 Tool to allow judges to sort and/or hide poems on the nomination page.

20 Remove the auto-scramble on the poetry nomination page. Better to keep the ranking static by date of nomination.

21 trim down the site, merging together some of the subforums, or removing them entirely, get rid of defunct pages (poetry resources) or revamp it

22 Revamp the site along the lines of http://poems-and-quotes-mockup.netau.net/

23 Update/edit the 'Other websites, poetry resources' section of the website links with other active or established or more useful poetry websites.

24 Get a notification if someone replies to your comment on a poem, or on a post (if the reply function gets added in).

    25 Allow emojis

26 Fix the spell check (it works at times and then goes away for awhile).

27 install "like" and other icons on forum thread comments and poem comments (similar to Facebook).

28 Ability to see who has marked which of your poems as their favorites.

29 Add a "reply" option when replying to a forum post similar to the comments on poems

30 A quote function on the forums would be nice.

31 Add award for "most nominated wins" for the person(s) nominating a winning poem to give people more reason to be reading poetry as opposed to just posting it:
    1 Nominated Win = Bronze Nominator's Award; X Nominated Wins = Silver; Y Nominated Wins = Gold; Z Nominated Wins = Platinum

32 Allow the initial letter of a poem to be lower case

33 Mentor status indicator to show willingness to help others (mentors would select this status and would appear in a side tab similar to Favorite Authors

34 Setting an option to follow certain threads, with notifications if there are new posts or if somebody quotes your message.

35 A notification when you get nominated or win.

Is it possible, to have a mark or note to show someone hss won an Hm?

  • Larry Chamberlin

    Interesting! An "HM" designation!
I think that could come under # 25, since the site currently does not recognize more than three poems.

Should all HMs get a mark or should there be a threshold point.

I love number 14 I believe? Also the ones about the manager status when leaving by transferring power it's nice since some want to leave to relax or just be on their own to recognize who they are and stuff like that. These list of wants are beautiful and beneficial to all

It should be pretty easy to add in support for HMs. Its hard to tell without looking at the full code, but I think the site just discards everything not in the top 3 instead of storing it.

Yep, just gotta hope that Santa Clause is real and does visit lol.

I've been working on a mockup of what p&q could look like, and here's what I've come up with it.

If you had to rank the suggestions by your top 10 & least 5, how would that go?

OK, in an attempt to demonstrate here's how I arranged the list: by impact on the overall site, by the amount of programing time needed to accomplish, by the factor of fun added in. How do you think it should it be ranked?

    Mark

    that looks amazing.

As Janis has abandoned us all why don't you start this new mock up as a fully functioning website?

    You could call it P&Q.

    I would migrate over
I am sure a vast majority of members would too.

This site shuts down every now and again then suddenly starts working again.
    What if it didn't?

We would all be poetic refugees

cast into the wilderness of the internet
taking refuge in the facebook group.

They could be run side by side for a while. Have the judges post their votes and comments in both websites, there will be times the site breaks ties and the outcomes may be different, but that is a small price to pay for having a working website.

I know there may be domain costs and advertising to sort out.

From a legal point of view, the copyright on this website looks to have expired in 2012. Not sure about the legal details but I know a member who might.

Great suggestions/designs and ideas but still the most important thing is encouraging more members to participate in the different forums, that's is a very hard task to achieve.

  • Red Yoshi

I like it as well. It would take getting used to a bit but, i agree with Darren, a lot of members would jump over. I would for sure

  • Larry Chamberlin

The copyrights were initiated in the dates shown. In the US copyright protection lasts 50 years. In other countries it can be even longer.

A notification when your poem has been nominated ----> I had no idea my poem was nominated but i fel like it could work just like comments on poems or messages.

  • hiraeth

It would work like that :)

  • IdTakeABulletForYou

Also, to re-invigorate reading on this site, I think an award for "most nominated wins" should be implemented for the person who nominates a poem that wins the weekly contest.

    I'd say something like:

    1 Nominated Win = Bronze Nominator's Award
    5 Nominated Wins = Silver Nominator's Award
    10 Nominated Wins = Gold Nominator's Award
    20 Nominated Wins = Platinum Nominator's Award

Of course, this is a more difficult award to accumulate, so perhaps those numbers are a bit too unwieldy. It would definitely give people more reason to be reading poetry as opposed to just posting it.

Put it in 20 words or less, ITABFY

and how about whether it ties in with the nominated notice or the HM tag previously mentioned?

I've used Gofundme quite a bit in the past, but I think a paypal might be a better idea since we wouldn't have the automatic 5% docked from what we raise.
