Storm Stories!

Hi, guys! Been kind of quiet lately so wanted to post something. Last night, there was some pretty bad whether in central Indiana and Ohio. At least 12 reported tornadoes and thousands of people without power in Kokomo, IN. I believe there were no deaths but around two dozen people injured. Luckily, we were only hit with bad rain and wind. We were about an hour or so away from the really bad stuff.

SO, I wanted to know... what are your craziest storm stories? Are you a storm chaser? Has your home ever been damaged by a storm?

I've never seen a live tornado, only have seen it in film or documentaries. We've had a lot of "practices" though with the tornado warning siren going off from our firehouse right down the road. I remember when I was young, bringing all the blankets I owned down to the basement and thinking of snacks too in case we were stuck there.

I've never seen a live tornado either. It'd be surreal to see one. They almost seem fictitious to me for some reason. I'm from California though, so the only natural forces I've experienced are earthquakes and drought.
I'm so happy you're ok! Stay safe.

I lived in Dallas for a few years & have seen several funnel-clouds developing, none of which made it to the ground. However, my first wife & I were driving to a party at night on the freeway. We were caught in such a downpour that we had to slow to less than 20 mph due to visibility. We heard a low rumbling that got slowly louder until the car was shaking. I sped up to 30 or so hoping to get away but it continued for a couple of miles & then disappeared. Although we never saw it the tornado was reported in the paper. Fortunately it did no damage.

Other than that incident I've always loved storms, even walking in them, listening to the thunder - especially on camping trips at the beach.

You're a brave man! Isn't it dangerous to walk on the beach during a storm? Did I make that up? I remember doing it once on a beach at Playa del Carmen in Mexico. It was nighttime and lightning was striking over the water. I don't remember if there was rain pouring on the sand where we were, but it was exhilarating. I love the sound of thunder. Usually I like to stay indoors when it storms though.

Aye, makes you know you're alive!

Perhaps there's a reason why some people love the thunder:

I breast fed my youngest daughter in the basement of my house, while my two year old daughter slept on an old couch as a tornado came through, damaging my car and my ex husbands canoe was wrapped around our tree back in 1992....Course I lived in tornado alley so it was the norm in the springtime where I lived.

Andrea I feel your pain. I have experienced a couple of tornadoes. It was bad weather and I told my now ex husband that I thought there was a tornado nearby. Then sirens started going off. He like a dumbness went outside to investigate, I gathered the kids 3 at the time into a closet. My daughter was only about four months I had to breastfeed in the closet. That was in 1995.

Another tornado story was I was on phone with our Cindy on my way home from work, like almost always. My hubby beeped in and told me to get home fast there were tornado warnings and he had to go out. (He is a deputy, first responder and volunteer firefighter) so he had to go. I come through town and was crying on the phone to Cindy. I could see the tornado forming to my left from the road I was on. I was speeding through a town that's notorious for speed traps (I drive really slow normally). She kept talking to me and kept me calm. I managed to get a picture of the tornado and sent it to Cindy. That was my brave thing to do. Cindy posted it on her page not too long before she passed. If you are friends on fb with her you can see the picture and now know the story behind it. She had such a calming voice. That tornado destroyed several houses and claimed a life of a paraplegic and sent several others to the hospital.

Wow, I thought tornadoes were rare and almost never life-threatening. I thought they were hyped up in movies. I feel very ignorant now. Your stories are terrifying. I see tiny "tornadoes" forming in empty land sometimes, but the ones that I've seen are small, harmless, and don't last long. I'm not sure they count.

THAT'S WILD. Your poor great uncle. I was watching tornado footage in Nebraska on Youtube earlier today after reading the last few posts and had to stop after a few videos. Scary stuff. I can't imagine witnessing a big tornado. They must seem huuuuuuuge in person.

Australia has cyclones...I'm not sure how that compares to a tornado but...here is a link to one of our worse...

My storm story? The very first time I was ever on an aeroplane, on a school trip to Switzerland, we had to make an emergency landing in Germany due to a freak electric storm...the plane was bouncing everywhere but...it hasn't put be off flying :)

"Tornadoes have diameters on the scale of 100s of meters and are produced from a single convective storm (i.e. a thunderstorm or cumulonimbus). A tropical cyclone, however, has a diameter on the scale of 100s of *kilometers* and is comprised of several to dozens of convective storms. NOAA"

North Texas gets its share of tornadoes. Back when I was in sales I let one of my reps go home to Wichita Falls to help his parents rebuild from a F4 tornado that devastated the whole town. Almost exactly a year later he had to return after another repeated the destruction.

And so the saga continues...... We are expecting tropical storm/hurricane cat 1 from Hermine. Expected tornadoes will spawn and power outages and fallen trees. Buckling down for the weekend and praying for everyone in storms way.

Edit... Sheriffs office had e.m.a. update on storm. Might miss here but who knows yet, and there are school closings. Not ours yet but have to stay posted.

    Good luck, Kay.

Okay so my worst storm story i was asleep for. I was 5-6 and was home alone (typical for my childhood)

i didnt realize that there was a hurricane going on (apparently it was famously bad) WELL... So... what wound up happening is i went to bed on the 3rd story of my parents house (this was also when we were very very rich, before everyone in my family went nuts).. well so im asleep throughout the whole storm. I wake up to a hole in my house!! There was a tree that fell through my room, all the way to the 2nd story.

Best part is i didnt awake when it first fell. I got a full nights sleep. I slept through a tree falling through my home.

That night i discovered just how heavy a sleeper i really was
