The site wouldn't let me add to this discussion as it's more that 180 days old??

Anyway...on the eve of your elections what are your thoughts people? Have your opinions changed since you posted on the other thread in March? We are getting 'live' coverage here on Wednesday (Australia time) and I have to wonder why...every news station in covering the American elections...we don't even get that coverage for our own...

I had the TV on today but was not watching it so don't know who said it (I was just listening) but this comment made me laugh..."This guy (Trump) should be in jail...why is he running for president"? Good question...why is he?? Even scarier...he might just win...

Lol true, even here in Lebanon, we have been without a president for 2 consecutive years...only with last week's elections that the void came to end, but we will be covering the U.S. Elections second by second where I work..which is really ironic.

I, as an outsider - 1st thought that Trump could be fatal for U.S. and foreign policies, the man lacks diplomatic intelligence, has no firm political background or connections, and apparently is a fool business man...one who lies a lot.

But recently I've been thinking that maybe America needs someone who doesn't give a heck about the world around and only wants what's best for the country. He sees illegal citizens and esp. Muslims as a threat, and I as a Muslim cannot blame him with all the chaos going around, obviously he has a problem with refugees and illegals, not American citizens who abide by the law...

and this somehow hints that he wont be sending troops to middle east and thus saving the lives of U.S. soldiers for real wars without sending troops all over the world and pretends that he wants to free anyone from their oppressing directorate government...he just doesn't care. And that's the best any U.S. president could do, mind their own needs.

The people know better after all, I am just seeing this from my own corner, I had a different view over him earlier, but suddenly felt like Clinton is the real threat, she holds the same agendas that former U.S. presidents held, which means she will probably be spending American money on non-American issues and conspiracies. Anyway if the majority say it's Trump then that's what they want..the final say if for the citizens. At least they get to choose who best represents them...it's democracy..?..

Trump was in my city yesterday. Yuck.

I am terrified of a Trump presidency. If he wins, we're not moving to Canada, but I will feel absolutely sick and scared... maybe during his entire term. The thought of that man in power makes my stomach turn. He gives me anxiety. His candidacy alone has brought racists and sexists out of the woodworks. People I had no idea had that level of hate and prejudice inside, hiding away all this time, well now they feel safe in the hate that unifies them. Trump is bad for women. He's bad for people of color. He's bad for the disabled. He's bad for immigrants. He's not a patriot. Not a good businessman. Not a good family man (unless 3 marriages and affairs are a good thing). Not a loyal ally. Not an honest person in any sense of the word. World leaders and foreigners would no doubt despise us, fear us, or in the very least mock us. I am embarrassed by my country. This is no longer a joke. We are teetering on the edge of disaster. I already voted. Clinton/Kaine all the way.

True, what confuses me as a non-American, I see many people who are against Trump, and then I see that polls show veryyy close rates of voters for both Trump and Clinton, it's like he represents half of the population, excluding those minorities who went for others...if he's really that bad for the country why is he being supported by almost the same number of voters going for Clinton..

Rania, it blows my mind. It really does. My gut reaction is HOOOWWWW does any sane person take Donald Trump seriously? I get not wanting someone with a lengthy political background; not the stereotypical politician with their hands dirty and deep in the game. I really do get that sentiment... but him? HIM?! A pompous, childish, flip-flopping, lying, cheating ass, who belligerently insults anyone who doesn't kiss the ground he walks on? Talk about stereotypical: he is a stereotypical tyrant. A reality TV star made famous by the line, "You're fired!" Almost as charming as his more recently discovered tag line, "Grab 'em by the *****." A man with very, very dirty hands is what you get with Trump. He hasn't been faithful to his wife (at least one of them), his beliefs, his employees. He's the definition of self-serving and untrustworthy. He barely had an interest in his own children as they grew up. Would he be different as our leader? HA! Surely we can do better than that if we want to reinvent our government. I barely even touched the bases. I'm beyond flabbergasted at this point. In 2 days all of our lives could be enormously, negatively impacted. I can't sleep because I am so worried.

Brooke, I should've added "bad for the LGBT community" in my last post.

In my humble opinion, I think it's dreadful that it's got to a point where either of those cretins are deemed the best two candidates to run for presidency. Between them, they are everything that a president shouldn't be. But, having said that, now that it is between those two, Clinton surely is the more sensible option.

I'm curious how long it will be until the people of the U.S. wake up and realize what they have done/are doing. I am a very middle of the road type person, and this election is driving me insane. On one side you have a guy that has (supposedly) been successful in business, is an ass, slightly volatile and has no public service record to base his talk vs. action off of. On the other you have a woman that really should be in jail. What she did was so dangerous to the American national security; I work in the technology industry - setting up networks and servers, there is definitely something wrong with that picture. She has so many skeletons in her closets and is the definition of a career politician.

Then there is a rarely talked about guy in the middle, who may be a tiny bit clueless, but is very balanced in his issues. I don't agree with him on everything, but I agree with him more than the other two. Don't vote for one bad choice because you think the other is worse, vote for the person you align your beliefs with. My .02.

Mark, I voted for Sanders in the primary.

I think Clinton has been vilified. She's a typical politician with typical dirty laundry. Put breasts and female genitalia on Donald Trump, and I'd stake my life that a woman with his demeanor and "qualifications" never would've made it as far as he has... A large amount of male politicians have horribly mismanaged their emails and if it makes the papers, it's certainly not front page material. The FBI has cleared Clinton twice. She gets compared to Obama a lot. She'd pull us through to the other side of 4 years in one piece, that is my heartfelt opinion. Trump would get us involved in World War III because of his childish, overly sensitive, spiteful personality, or at the very least, he'd manage to erase decades of progress. I wish I could be less freaked out about this election, but we cannot survive a reality TV star as our President. He doesn't care about us. Any of us. He cares about fame. He thinks he deserves to be President because he's got the emotional capacity of a spoiled, entitled child.

  • hiraeth

I'm glad you voted for Sanders.

Trump is a vile person, that's no denying that. Between his stances and his general lack of political experience, he will be a disaster. That still doesn't excuse Clinton's actions and her stances. It's not fair to hold one candidate to a certain standard by stating the other candidate is just as bad or worse.

The primary reason why Clinton's mishandling is front-page worthy as opposed to her male counterparts, is the fact that she's running for President. I certainly hope there's no sexism being involved in the reasons why Clinton's email scandal being big as it is, but to think that is not a factor would be naive. I agree with AJ, it's extremely disconcerting that any political figure, let alone a presidential candidate would mishandle their emails. The email scandal tends to get side-swept because it's just "emails". It's important for a multitude of reasons but primarily because of the lack of correct archiving (she's been in politics for a while, and should be acquainted with it). The lack of proper archiving prevents FOI requests from happening, which I'd argue is an important pillar of democracy since it fosters transparency between the government and the general public. Another issue was the fact that she was sending classified information over non-secure channels and to non-secured email addressees.

This is a decent read that highlights the importance of the email-scandal:

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/eli-zaretsky/why-hillarys-emails-matte_b_10426496.html

That being said, the Clinton campaign has worked with the DNC to hinder Sander's campaign. The DNC head then resigned to join Clinton's campaign in the midst of this controversy. The DNC has also access to debate questions prior to the debate, and as well wrote interview questions for the CNN interview of Trump which is extremely unprofessional, and uncalled for.

The Clinton campaign (shown in the Podesta Emails) was also grateful that Florida's primary was a closed election since Florida had a low amount of eligible young voters (since Sanders was polling exceptionally well with young voters across the board).

It also seems likely that Clinton would resume weapon sales to Saudi Arabia (who ironically has a seat on the UN Human Right's council but that's another issue separately), who has been involved in civilian killings in Yemen via air-strikes. Clinton also supports fracking.

Not to mention remarks made by Clinton in the past that described 'black youths' as 'super-predators', and apparently jokingly stating that 'why can't we just drone him [julian assange / wikileaks]' (but there's no definitive proof of that). The wikileaks of her transcripts are concerning she stated 'you need a public and a private position on topics'.

I accidentally refreshed the page when I was writing this comment out, so there were more things I wanted to address, but I think that's the general gist of it.

It's a shame that the two candidates for the presidency are not the most ideal (understatement). I'm hoping for a Clinton presidency though, since third-party candidates are not viable because of the electoral system and the electoral college. There needs to be a change towards proportional voting & a meaningful voting system in both the US and Canada.

  • Brookie

Third party groups are actually fairly bad. one side you have someone who lies and has just said whatever because they know they will not win. Other side you have someone who had all the opposite opinions that bernie did yet they are acting like HEY I WANT EVERYTHING HE WANTED. like boom, bad choices. at least cinton hits on the same points *most* of what bernie felt. Seriously. Now will she act to push those like he would? No i doubt that.

LGBT... you have no idea. Even here, at the bible belt we have infighting, a lot of the group is torn between the two and a lot of the LG are hating very hard on the B & T groups. Thats not new but... Its gotten a lot worse because this is just a bad setup..

Im worried for a long of reasons... i m worried that things like HB2 and other laws that are cropping out. HB2 created a huge thing in multiple states where they made laws that were worse ...

Jeez and with my situation im worried what might happen. Trump has brought out the worst and luckily i dont get shit because people cant tell in person, but please..

In this room im in currently there are females saying, HE CAN SAY WHATEVER HE WANTS WE ARE JUST WOMEN... that is a quote from a non transwoman. Like... I cant even express how i have the worst gut feeling.

Mark, why are you hoping for a Clinton presidency when all is said and done?

I am not saying Clinton is a hero. She's not. She has made big mistakes, and so has Trump. The issue for me lies in Trump's character; his utter lack of poise, tact, and intelligence, and his hatefulness. Apologize for anything he's done wrong or own up to it? Hell no. He can't admit wrongdoing or apologize for horrible things he's said and done because he simply won't admit he's said or done them. He lies constantly. It's impossible to judge exactly what he thinks or feels because he probably doesn't even know. He says what he thinks sounds good in the moment and when he suffers backlash because hey, it didn't actually sound all that great, he claims he didn't say it. It's bizarre behavior. He's unhinged. To me, the choice is between a politician with the ability to reason and express self-awareness and make balanced, calculated decisions, and a spoiled, rotten man with the attention span of a goldfish who has failed at pretty much everything in life besides garner attention.

Trump doesn't have a dirty political history because he's never had the chance to be in politics and now he's running for the highest office. I only WISH he had some political experience so people could stop using his lack of political failure (purely because he's never had the opportunity) as a positive for his campaign. If he had the power, he'd be tied up in more than Benghazi. He's said he would force the military to commit war crimes. He fraternizes with avowed white Supremacists. He defends FDR's internment of Japanese Americans. He blames sexual assault in the military on putting men and women together. He has praised Kim Jong-Un. He's joked that he could shoot someone in the middle of 5th Avenue and he still wouldn't lose voters. He advocates plundering for oil in Iraq and Libya. He refuses to rule out the use of nuclear weapons against ISIS.

Clinton > Trump. Trump's an extremely vile person, and it honestly stumps be how he even managed to secure the RNC nomination.

I'm just angry that the elections actually came down to these two, as opposed to Sanders, and maybe Rubio or Kasich ? (I'll admit I haven't kept tabs on the RNC before Trump actually won).

Very interesting thoughts so far :)

I've just read an article which states..."Trump is the most disliked presidential nominee in the history of polling, but Clinton is the second most disliked". Again, I have to ask...how come they got where they are if this is the general consensus of the people?

Things look more like the razzamatazz that is associated with the lead up to a super bowl final. I don't know if the majority realise yet, so caught up in all the innuendo, that this is America's future for the next four years.

Totally agree with Senryu. It's sad that his nomination as the Republican presidential candidate has lead to such polarisation both within the party and within the country itself. The Republican party is a joke, and after the Wikileaks dump we learned that the Democratic party isn't much better.

Hopefully everyone unites post-election, because this level of division within a community won't lead to anything constructive. We gotta work together to get stuff done, not bring each other down. Empowerment, yo'. Especially at a time when global warming is threatening everything - we have candidates like Trump who say "we need global warming" and Hillary who is pro-fracking/trying to sell it to the world. NO.

Glad this isn't my country TBH, but it's sad American politics influences the globe when we (non-Americans) don't have a say in the matter.

    Good luck today, Americans. xo

Hilary managed to secure the DNC nomination through the help of DNC officials, who were supposed to be neutral.

I've been watching footage of Trump during the RNC primaries. The nominees for the RNC steadily withdrew before March, leaving Rubio, Kasich, Cruz, Trump.

Trump didn't get to the position where he was, without being a decent salesman, and that's what he did. He has prior experience in the media industry, and utilized that extremely well. Trump's tweets were always brought up in the news because of how outrageous & ridiculous they can be. He was consistently on the offensive, and because of that he was able to portray the other candidates in a negative lime-light that was detrimental to their campaigns.

    Trump on Rubio:
    http://www.politico.com/story/2016/03/trump-slams-marco-rubio-social-media-220374

    Trump on Kasich:

    Trump on Cruz:

    http://www.cnn.com/2016/03/22/politics/ted-cruz-melania-trump-twitter-donald-trump-heidi/

Rubio's campaign seemed to fizz out because of his involvement in the immigration bill, where it offered a path for citizenship for illegal immigrants. Trump capitalized on this throughout his campaign by fear-mongering, painting immigration in a bad light.

Trump's campaign was primarily built on false promises & fear. This coupled with this prior experience in media, paved the way for his RNC nomination.

& it's election day, please don't let us down you guys <3.

All you Americans, get out & vote today, if you already haven't!
